Gold Leads Advancing 74; Hansen, Adeniya & Jenkins Fall on Day 1a

Nível 10 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Day 1a chip leader Alan Gold
Day 1a chip leader Alan Gold

The Full Tilt Poker United Kingdom & Ireland Poker Tour (UKIPT) Galway Festival continued Thursday with the start of the €1,000,000 Guarantee Main Event. The €1,000+€100 buy-in tournament meant the event would need to attract 1,000 players to meet the guarantee, but a rare overlay is more than likely after a modest 231 players turned out for the first starting flight.

After ten one-hour levels of play, that number was reduced to approximately 74 with Alan Gold and his stack of 272,700 leading the way — that's nearly twice as much as the next closest competitor! We missed how Gold acquired all those chips, but he seemed to get most of them in the last two levels of the night where his stack seemed to increase exponentially.

Another man who finished with a big stack was Mark Spelman, who got many of his chips in the last level of the night when his {2-Hearts}{2-Clubs} won a 155,000-chip pot against Ali Abdallah's {q-Hearts}{q-Diamonds} on a {A-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{Q-Spades} board. Talk about a nasty river! Spelman bagged 140,000 and is among the top stacks.

Others who advanced to Day 2 were FTP qualifier Miklos Soproni (175,900), PokerStars player Ben Bauer (142,600), star of Ireland's The Apprentice Cahal Heapes (50,400), Vitalijs Polukejevs (114,100), Max Silver (91,700), Keith Hawkins (63,100), Roy "The Boy" Brindley (58,100) and the star of the film Bet, Raise, Fold Danielle Andersen (37,600).

Unfortunately not everyone was fortunate enough to survive the day. FTP Professional Gus Hansen was among the eliminated. Hansen fell in Level 6 (200/400/50) on a board reading {j-Spades}{6-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}. Hansen had checked to Malta's Charlo Azzopardi, who proceeded to bet enough to cover the "Great Dane." Hansen, as he is prone to do, hit the tank and began talking to himself. "I did this to myself," he lamented before calling off his stack. Azzopardi then tabled {a-}{a-} for pocket rockets, which bested the {A-}{J-} of Hansen. With that Hansen took the long walk of loneliness out of the tournament tent, across the foyer and into the Players' Lounge where he played Pacman and talked to PokerNews' Laura Cornelius, which you can view by scrolling down.

Others who fell on Day 1a included Full Tilt Poker Ambassador Ben Jenkins, Frank Lillis, Surinder Sunar, Liv Boeree, Patrck Smyth, Barny Boatman, Ian Cordts, John Duthie, Peter Garrett, Lisa Hawkes, Shaun Hegarty, Conor O'Driscoll, Michael Frisby, Henry Port, Matthew Humphrey, Chun Ho Law, Con Collins and FTP Ambassador Martins Adeniya.

Adeniya, who talked to PokerNews in depth about his week spent in Galway as a FTP Ambassador, got the last of his chips in with the {J-Spades}{J-Diamonds} against Ben Bauer's {K-Hearts}{Q-Spades}. The board ran out {3-Hearts}{K-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{2-Spades}{5-Diamonds} and Adeniya took his leave in the last level of the night.

"I’m going out drinking tonight with a few of the boys and just a bit of relaxing outside of play," Adeniya said of his evening plans while adding that he now plans to play the FTOPS.

Day 1b will kick off at Noon local time and is expected to draw a massive field. Among those planning to attend are FTP Ambassadors Sinem Melin and Dermot Blain; FTP Professional and online legend Viktor “Isildur1” Blom; FTP UKIPT High Roller champ Sergio Aido; the fast-talking David “Devilfish” Ulliott; and Team PokerStars Pro and Triple Crown winner Jake Cody, just to name a few. Until then, good night from Galway!

Boeree Bust by Furey Who Then Busts Next Hand

Nível 10 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Liv Boeree
Liv Boeree

We saw Team PokerStars Pro Liv Boeree exiting the feature table area, which led us to believe that she had been eliminated. Sure enough, a quick check with the table confirmed that she had opened with {a-}{10-} only to be three-bet by Kieran Furey. Boeree shoved her short stack, Furey called with {a-}{j-} and the lovely lady was unable to improve.

As we were getting those details, Furey ended up busting in the very next hand. It happened when Barry Foley opened for 2,000 from early position and Furey moved all in from the cutoff for roughly 20,000. George Stoddart then moved all in over the top from the small blind and Foley got out of the way.

Stoddart: {a-Spades}{k-Clubs}
Furey: {a-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}

Furey was dominated, but the {8-Diamonds}{k-Spades}{q-Diamonds} flop lifted his spirits as he picked up a flush draw. Unfortunately for him, his spirits were soon crushed after the {2-Hearts} turn and {Q-Hearts} river both failed to deliver a diamond.

Meanwhile, PokerStars qualifier Marek Hanzlik of the Czech Republic was eliminated by Malta's Emmanuel Mizzi after running the {a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds} into his opponent's {a-Diamonds}{a-Spades}. The board ran out {10-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{k-Clubs}{4-Clubs} and that was all she wrote for Hanzlik.

Check-Raises Upon Check-Raises Upon Check-Raises

Nível 8 : 400/800, 100 ante
Dino Sabatini
Dino Sabatini

It started innocently enough.

In a four-way pot the flop of {2-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} had been checked around to David McHardy who bet 3,000 as last to act. First Adrian Arulanandam check-raised to 7,025 - a strong move in a multiway pot. But that was only the beginning as Hakon Johansen then reraised all in over the top for around 25,000 - a move that looked even stronger.

And then Dino Sabatini then pushed over the top of that! The action was back around to McHardy who probably couldn't believe what he'd started. McHardy quickly folded and Arulanandam looked similarly bemused, also giving up the hand.

Johansen: {9-Spades}{9-Hearts}
Sabatini: {K-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}

The {10-Clubs} on the turn did not change anything but the {10-Diamonds} on the river did, Johansen making a full house to jump to 70,000 while Sabatini dropped down to 78,000.

Full Tilt Poker Professional Gus Hansen Hits the Rail

Nível 6 : 200/400, 50 ante
Gus Hansen
Gus Hansen

While Gus Hansen has had a busy week here in Galway, he was relatively quiet today. That recently changed when he was eliminated by Malta's Charlo Azzopardi.

We didn't catch the action until the river with a board reading {j-Spades}{6-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}. Hansen had checked to Azzopardi, who proceeded to bet enough to cover the "Great Dane."

Hansen, as he is prone to do, hit the tank and began talking to himself. "I did to time myself," he lamented before calling off his stack.

Azzopardi then tabled {a-}{a-} for pocket rockets, which bested the {A-}{J-} of Hansen. With that Hansen took the long walk of loneliness out of the tournament tent, across the foyer and into the Players' Lounge where he is currently playing Pacman in an attempt to best his high score.

An Orbit with FTP Ambassador Ben Jenkins

Ben Jenkins, who has been playing professionally since 2009 with career highlights including a chop of PokerStars Sunday Warm-Up and a number of significant final table appearances, was recently name an ambassador for Full Tilt Poker, so we thought it'd be worthwhile to spend time with the dapper dresser.

We decided to do an entire orbit with the pro, who was sitting with around 14,000 at the time. Here's what we witnessed:

Hand #1 (UTG +1): The under-the-gun player folded and Jenkins did the same.

Hand #2 (Under the Gun): Jenkins was first to act and folded.

Hand #3 (Big Blind): Action folded to the small blind who raised. Jenkins folded.

Hand #4 (Small Blind): Action folded to Jenkins and he put in a raise to 800, which Simone Srtookman defended from the big. When the flop came down {5-Hearts}{9-Spades}{5-Clubs}, Jenkins continued for 900 and Srtookman folded.

Hand #5 (Button): Jenkins folded the button after the player in the hijack opened for 700.

Hand #6 (Cutoff): Action folded around to Jenkins and he did the same.

Hand #7 (Hijack): A player opened for 700 in middle position and Jenkins folded.

Hand #8 (Middle Position): Jenkins folded after action folded to him.

It wasn't an exciting orbit, but then again, poker is slow more times than not.

Condron Defeats Hansen Heads-Up; Turns Down Tempting Offer

A couple of days ago, Full Tilt Poker pro Gus Hansen, who is known to play the highest stakes in the world both online and live, opted to give the FTP UKIPT Galway €35+5 Daily event a go.

That tournament attracted 67 runners and before long Hansen held the chip lead, which he used to make it all the way to the final table. It was there that he would reach heads-up play against John "Donk Magnet" Condron, a Co Kildare man who had to chop 50% of his winning with his friend MJ Boggan. By then Condron held a 310K-240K chip lead, which he used to beat the "Great Dane" for the €710 first-place prize.

Granted, it was a mediocre payday, but there was a ton of pride on the live.

"It was an unbelievable experience to play against such a legend," Condron told Gareth Chantler and Ken Powell of the Full Tilt Poker Blog after the win. "Gus is just pure class, some ambassador for Full Tilt Poker, certainly the best representative they could ever have. He played with a smile on his face throughout, helped the dealers wherever possible and even cracked one poor lad’s pocket kings when he called all-in pre with 7-4 offsuit.”

Condron so impressed Hansen that the high-stakes pro offered to stake him into the FTP UKIPT Galway Main Event. It was a tempting offer, but Condron had already committed to the event — as an official chip counter — so he had to decline.

“It was so sound of him to offer me the stake, but professional duties have to come first,” Condron added. “He actually told me he thought I was the best player in the field, including himself. So that was obviously a huge thrill. Maybe we’ll keep in touch and he might fancy putting me into the World Series next year!”

What's FTP Ambassador Martins Adeniya Been Up to Here in Galway?

Last month Martins Adeniya was announced as one of four Full Tilt Poker ambassadors brought in to represent the online room at all stops of the United Kingdom and Ireland Poker Tour (UKIPT). His first assignment was the FTP UKIPT Galway Festival, which has been playing out over the last week on the west coast of Ireland.

Adeniya discovered poker while studying business at the University of Bath and quickly worked his way up from low-stakes home games to multi-tabling $10/$20 NL Hold’em online. After earning over $180,000 for a third place finish in the FTOPS Main Event, Martins decided to focus 100% on poker.

Since then Adeinya has become a rising star in the poker world with $487,965 in career earnings dating back to 2009. Among his notable accomplishments are a seventh-place finish in the 2011 EPT/UKIPT London Main Event for $134,964; 13th in the 2010 World Series of Poker $25,000 No Limit Hold’em – Six Handed for $58,699; 9th in the 2010 WSOP $2,500 No Limit Hold’em – Six Handed for $40,547; second in a 2010 Venetian Deep Stack $500 No Limit Hold’em for $28,265; and 474th in the 2009 WSOP Main Event for $25,027. The only win on Adeniya’s résumé came in 2012 in the £500 London Super Stack Series – High Roller for $16,899.

PokerNews caught up with the Londoner on the break to see what he's been up to in the last week here in Galway.

PokerNews: You’ve been in Galway for a week and a half now. What’s it been like?

Adeniya: It’s my first time here and it’s a great city. The weather has not been great this week, but we actually made it down to the races on one of the days. Had a few bets. It was pretty cool actually. All the Ambassadors went down and it was a fun day out.

The Galway Races seem to be extremely popular. Can you describe you experience a little bit?

I’ve been to the horse races before in Newbury, but it was nothing in comparison to what I’ve seen here. The stands were packed shoulder to shoulder. All the women were dressed up real nice. It’s a good environment. Everyone has a good buzz about them. I actually got right up in front of the stands, which you can actually see your winner run past—if I did have a winner.

What’s your impression of the FTP UKIPT Galway Festival venue?

When they told me that they were just building it from scratch I had no idea what to expect, but what I’ve seen so far outweighs my expectations. The gameroom with all the drinking and everything it great. Gus Hansen is on the Pacman nonstop, we’ve been playing pool. There’s foosball and a lot of drinking going on in that room.

The tournament room is fine. There’s wi-fi everywhere, drinks, food, it’s a great environment to play poker in. It’s quite relaxing.

We saw a picture of you on the pitch playing football. What’s the story behind that?

Adeniya on the pitch.
Adeniya on the pitch.

So we had a UK vs. Ireland heads-up tournament at the start of the week. Jake Cody and I were co-captains for the UK and or team knocked out all of Team Ireland by the quarterfinals. We crushed them in the point standings. We had Gus on our side but he switched over to the Irish side, so it made their score look a bit more respectable in the end.

They decided they wanted a rematch against Team UK in the football. We were happy to take them on, but we got crushed in the football. They had some ringers in, and our players had a big night out the night before, so we were already up against it.

So you’ve gotten the chance to go out in Galway. What’s the nightlife like?

The nightlife has been good actually. I’ve been to a few restaurants, there are some really cool restaurants in town that aren’t all that expensive. I’ve been to few pubs. They’re all very traditional with live music going on. The Irish are just good fun. Everyone is happy and very welcoming. We’ve had some great nights out here so far. The other night the Ambassadors and Gus were all out playing drinking games in one of the pubs until 3 a.m. even though on the pub door it said they closed at 1 a.m.

Speaking of the FTP Ambassadors, how are you all getting along?

We’ve all played before against each other before, but we didn’t really find out who each other were until our first photo shoot out in Croatia, which was a couple of months back. So we all got to know each other out there. It was really chill, like photos, food and drinks. We’re a tight group now, we all know each other quite well.

What are your plans for the weekend aside from playing the Main Event?

I’ve been playing some cash during the week. FTOPS is going on at the moment, so if I do bust I’ll play the FTOPS. I’m going out drinking tonight with a few of the boys, and just a bit of relaxing outside of play. Hopefully I’ll go deep though.

Adeniya is playing the €1,000 Main Event (€1,000,000 Guarantee) today. The PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be following his progress and posting updates in our live blog all weekend long, so be sure to keep an eye out for those!

An Apprentice Alum Looking to Avoid Being the First to Go

Cahal Heapes
Cahal Heapes

The Apprentice is a television hit in the United States — especially the Celebrity version — so it's no surprise that Ireland has it's own show, but instead of Donald Trump doing the hiring and firing, it's Bill Cullen. In the 2010 series, which was the third installment in Ireland, a man by the name of Cahal Heapes, then a 32-year-old Area Sales Manager, was among the 16 contestants.

Heapes, who is in today's field, was the first project manager for the men's team, which was named "Elev8." Unfortunately for him, a twist in the game saw the project managers of the women's team swap with Heapes at the beginning of the task. His male leadership on an all-woman team didn't prove a winning formula and he became the first person fired from the reality TV show.

Check out Heapes post-interview elimination from The Apprentice:

Here's hoping Heapes isn't the first one to be eliminated here today!

A Look Back at Hansen's Win in Event #8 €1,000+€100 UK vs. Ireland Heads-Up Championship

The Full Tilt Poker Galway Festival, which is happening now on west coast of Ireland, will culminate next week with the Main Event, €2,000 UKIPT High Roller and €10,000 UKIPT Super High Roller, all of which PokerNews will be on hand to live report. In the meantime, we thought we’d take a look at the preliminary events completed thus far, which includes a win by FTP Professional Gus Hansen, who emerged victorious in the highly publicized Event #8 €1,000+€100 UK vs. Ireland Heads-Up Championship.

The tournament, which was live streamed on the Full Tilt Poker Blog, attracted 32 runners and created a prize pool of €32,000. The event was also built upon a UK vs. Ireland rivalry as members of each country squared off against one another. Among the participants were Marty Wilson, Jude Ainsworth, Steve O'Dwyer, Martins Adeniya, Dermot Blain, Donnacha O'Dea, Matt Perrins, Andy Black, Jake Cody and Surinder Sunar.

While that competition was heated for a bit, by the time the final four rolled around the Irish were mathematically eliminated. Even through the UK won 44 points to Ireland's 36 points, the Irish got a little hope when Hansen, who is Danish mind you, switched allegiances from the UK to Ireland.

Hansen first defeated the UK's Max Silver 2-1 in the semi-final, before taking on Dave Nicholson in the best-of-five final. It was as heated as could be as both players took two matches, and it came down to the fifth for all the glory. Fortunately for Hansen, and his newfound Irish allies, he was able to clinch victory. Hansen, who donned green hat and draped the Irish flag over his shoulders, literally toasted a Guinness as he took down the €16,151 first-place prize and the title.

“There were no walks in the park,” Hansen said after winning the title. “I played twelve hours yesterday and twelve hours today. I didn’t sleep last night and haven’t eaten anything today."
