PokerStars Championship Macau HK$206,000 Single Re-Entry Shot Clock

30-second Shot Clock used at PSC Macau
30-second Shot Clock used at PSC Macau

Welcome back poker fans, to the PokerStars Championship Macau here at the luxurious City of Dreams resort. While the HK$400,000 Super High Roller may have wrapped up yesterday that does not conclude the high stakes action on offer here in Macau this week.

The HK$206,000 (~US$26,500) Single Re-Entry Shot Clock will be getting underway at 12pm local time (GMT+7) and if the numbers in the Super High Roller are anything to go by then we could well be in for a busy day. Day 1B of the PSC Main Event will also be starting at 6pm local time.

With several of the high rollers in attendance at PokerStars Championship Macau playing Day 1A of the HK$42,400 Main Event on Monday 3 April so they have a window in their schedule today, we are anticipating some decent numbers here.

High stakes regulars Sergio Aido, David Peters, Nick Petrangelo, Isaac Haxton, Sam Greenwood, Ali Reza Fatehi and Nariman Yaghmai all played yesterday and are some of the likely candidates we expect to see at the baize today.

Steve O’Dwyer will also be looking to bag himself the three-peat after emerging victorious at the PokerStars Championship Panama US$10,000 Single-Day High Roller, following that up with a victory in the PokerStars Championship Macau HK$400,000 Super High Roller.

Following the same format as the HK$400,000 Super High Roller – which attracted an impressive 88 unique entries – the tournament will feature a 30-second shot clock which activates 5-seconds into every hand.

Once this runs down players have three (30-second) time extension chips that come into play automatically once the initial 30-second clock has expired. If a player has no more time bank chips and is first to act in the hand and there has been no action then they are counted as checking automatically. If there has been action and the player has no more time bank chips once the 30-seconds Shot Clock has counted down then their hand is declared dead – unless of course, they have already acted.

Players start with 100,000 stacks and have 30-minute levels in which to use them and you can follow all the action as it happens exclusively on PokerNews so stay tuned as we bring you all the action as it happens.

Fatehi Out

Nível 3 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Not a good day at the office for Ali Reza Fatehi
Not a good day at the office for Ali Reza Fatehi

Ali Reza Fatehi has not had a very good afternoon so far and it just got a whole lot worse. A recently arrived Fedor Holz opened the action in this particular hand with a raise to 4,000.

If Holz’ current tournament form is anything to go by he usually doubles in the first five minutes but this is not the case here – for a change.

Dan Smith mulls things over on the button before electing to re-raise to 12,500 in total and Fatehi, sitting in the small blind, moves the last of his chips in for an all-in bet of 34,200 in total.

Holz snap folded, to a groan and a cry of ‘nooooooo!’ from Smith who slaps {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds} face up on the table. Fathei tables {j-Diamonds}{j-Spades} and is in need of some help, which fails to arrive when the board runs out {4-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{3-Diamonds} {2-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}.

Amusingly, this brings a cry of ‘nooooooooo!’ from Holz, who told Smith he just folded {5-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}.

“There’s no way you call if I shove though, right?” quizzes Smith jokingly as he stacks up his newly won chips.

For Fatehi that brings his tournament to a close as that was already his second bullet and the Iranian retires to lick his wounds.

Time Bank Confusion Heralds Chen Exit

Nível 4 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
James Chen Departs
James Chen Departs

We are not sure what all of the pre-flop betting action was as we arrived just as James Chen had moved all-in for 79,000 in total from the button over the top of a Shou Li (big blind) raise of 28,000.

It’s a big decision and there are just 3 seconds left on the clock before Li threw in one of his three time bank chips, but the dealer forgot to restart the 30-second clock. Fortunately, Sergio Aido is on hand to press the button and Li nearly burns through all of his extra time before throwing in the call and the cards are turned over.

James Chen: {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}
Shuo Li: {j-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}

The {8-Spades}{6-Clubs}{10-Hearts} flop brings no help for Chen and the {j-Clubs} turn leaves the Taiwanese high-stakes cash specialist drawing to the decks four remaining queens. Unfortunately for Chen the river is the {7-Diamonds} and it does not look as though he fancies a second bullet.

Peters Pressures Haxton

Nível 6 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
David Peters
David Peters

Current chip leader David Peters is strengthening his position and applying the pressure at the moment, with Isaac Haxton the man under the hammer in this particular hand.

There is already over 55,000 in the pot when we arrive on the turn with the board reading {q-Spades}{q-Clubs}{j-Spades} {4-Clubs}. Haxton checked the action over to Peters who tightens the screws with a bet of 22,000.

Haxton thought it over and made the call, leaving himself around 83,500 behind and the {j-Hearts} came down on the river to double pair the board.

Haxton checked once more and Peters quickly announced ‘all-in’ to send Haxton deep into the tank. He burns through a time bank chip (Haxton now has two remaining) and chews through nearly the full 30-seconds of extra time before grudgingly folding leaving Peters to scoop the pot and further extend his lead.

The Lucky Mango Strikes Again

Nível 7 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Dan Smith
Dan Smith

The cards of JC Alvarado were all but rushed away, as his pocket jacks were no match to the {9-Clubs}{9-Hearts} of Dan Smith. Just prior to the hand, Steve O'Dwyer asked Smith if he wanted some mango and the American jumped over to grab a piece before he looked up Alvarado for some 100,000 with the inferior pocket pair. Next you'd see a board of {9-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{9-Spades}{5-Diamonds} that gave Smith quads and Alvarado was jinxed out by the magic mango.

Smith then told an extra story shortly after: When O'Dwyer was short, he tried to sell the lucky mango and the best offer was 20 HKD. Someone offered 100 USD and O'Dwyer declined, then started eating the mango slices.

O'Dwyer Runs out of Magic Mango

Nível 9 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Steve O'Dwyer
Steve O'Dwyer

After a raise by Steve O'Dwyer, Fabian Quoss defended his big blind and checked the flop of {J-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}. O'Dwyer continued for 20,000 and Quoss then check-raised all in for effectively 110,000, as that's what O'Dwyer had left. The Irishman called and was ahead in the showdown.

Steve O'Dwyer: {J-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}
Fabian Quoss: {J-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}

While the {4-Diamonds} turn changed nothing, the {Q-Hearts} river indeed improved Quoss to a straight. O'Dwyer took his belongings, looked down at the mango slices next to his seat, and said "I will take one last bite" before exiting the tournament room. Daniel Dvoress jokingly asked Quoss if he had a bite of the magic mango as well and Quoss nodded with a big grin on his face.

Dvoress Uses Tradesman’s Entrance

Nível 10 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Daniel Dvoress
Daniel Dvoress

Action folded around to Daniel Dvoress on the button and he popped it up to 16,000. Chip leader Mikita Badziakouski was the player in the big blind and with chips to spare he made the call to take play heads-up to the {j-Spades}{k-Diamonds}{q-Hearts} flop.

Badziakouski thought about betting, looked like betting and then… checked. Dvoress checked it back and the turn came down {a-Diamonds}. Badziakouski checked once more and Dvoress decided to take a stab for 15,000.

Badziakouski counted out chips for a raise but thought better of it and threw in the call and the {j-Diamonds} hit the river.

This brought another check from Badziakouski and Dvoress pushed out a bet of 24,000, which was quickly called. Dvoress turned over {q-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} for the rivered backdoor diamond flush and Badziakouski let out a deep sigh before throwing his hand away.

Louis Salter busted before the break, as did Juicy Li and while we missed their exit hands neither player chose to re-enter.

Troyanovskiy and Hongjun Bust Before Break

Nível 12 : 6,000/12,000, 2,000 ante
Vladimir Troyanovskiy
Vladimir Troyanovskiy

There has been a last-gasp burst of action and Vladimir Troyanovskiy and Zhao Hongjun have departed in a flurry of cards and chips.

We caught the action in Troyanovskiy's bust out hand on the turn in a heads up pot between the former and Daniel Dvoress with the board reading {5-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}{a-Spades} {9-Clubs} with the Russian facing down a 106,000 bet from the Canadian.

Troyanovskiy burned through nearly the entire allotted 30-seconds before shoving for a little under 260,000 but was called instantly by Dvoress – and did not look happy about this at all. When the cards are turned over we can see why.

Vladimir Troyanovskiy: {a-Diamonds}{2-Spades}
Daniel Dvoress: {a-Clubs}{9-Hearts}

The Russian was in bad shape, left drawing to the deck’s two remaining jacks, neither of which appeared on the river to send Troyanovskiy to the rail.

While this was happening Zhao Hongjun and Jack Salter became involved in a huge hand that cost the former his tournament life.

We missed all of the action and only arrived in time to catch the aftermath, but Salter was kind enough to recap the action for us before heading off for his dinner.

Pre-flop it was Hongjun who was the aggressor, with Salter calling in position with {j-Spades}{10-Spades} and hitting gin when the flop came down {9-Spades}{8-Spades}{7-Spades}. Unaware he had walked into a monster Hongjun checked the action over to Salter, who fired for 27,000. The Chinese player sealed his demise after choosing to check raise to 62,000 with Salter craftily smooth calling to set the trap.

Hongjun led out for 95,000 on the {6-} turn and Salter smooth-called once again and the river came down a meaningless {5-}.

The Chinese player fired out a 100,000 bet, leaving himself 80,000 behind, which he called off when Salter moved all-in, but could only tap the table and stand up to leave when Salter rolled over the stone cold nuts.

Yu First Casualty After Dinner

Nível 13 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Dengfeng Yu
Dengfeng Yu

Davidi Kitai shoved for his last 35,000 from under the gun and Dengfeng Yu reshoved for 120,000 from two seats over. Daniel Dvoress checked the stacks of Yu and the players behind him before announcing the call, while everyone else got out of the way.

Davidi Kitai: {Q-Hearts}{6-Clubs}
Dengfeng Yu: {A-Hearts}{3-Spades}
Daniel Dvoress: {K-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}

The board ran out {K-Hearts}{9-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{8-Clubs} and the rail of the Belgian, including Pierre Calamusa and Fabrice Soulier, applauded as Kitai made a backdoor straight to triple up. Yu however was sent to the rail.

JC Alvarado departed in 15th place
JC Alvarado departed in 15th place

JC Alvarado and Artem Metalidi got all the chips in pre-flop and it was left to a good old fashioned race to decide the fate of Alvarado’s tournament life.

JC Alvarado: {a-Clubs}{j-Spades}
Artem Metalidi: {5-Spades}{5-Hearts}

Unfortunately for the Mexican, the board ran out {k-Spades}{2-Hearts}{10-Clubs} {8-Diamonds}{3-Spades} and he departed in 15th place while Metalidi stacked up to 376,000.
