GPL Week 9 - Americas Conference - Close Wins for Ladouceur, Kaverman and Jaffe

Week 9 of this inaugural season of the Global Poker League is in the books. This last day of action brought some interesting heads-up battles in the Americas conference. We saw three very tight matches, which all were decided in the final of three heats.

The first match of the night saw Marc-Andre Ladouceur and Olivier Busquet battling for the lead in the Americas conference. It was a rematch of the game played in Week 5 of the GPL. In that match, Busquet scored a 2-1 victory.

Ladouceur’s Montreal Nationals started the day with a three-point advantage on the LA Sunset, represented by Busquet.

The score was levelled after the first heat. It took a while before the first big pot was played, but when it happened Busquet quickly decided the heat. He first crippled Ladouceur by flopping trips against his opponents top pair.

He sealed the deal not much later with pocket eights against Ladouceur’s ace-six. The Nationals manager couldn’t hit an ace or find another escape route and lost the first heat.

Ladouceur came back swinging in the second heat. He rivered a straight against Busquet’s trips to take a big advantage in that game. He finished it off a few hands later. With {7-Spades}{J-Spades} he made another straight on the {10-Spades}{3-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{A-Hearts}-board. This time, Busquet had ten-nine for two pair and couldn’t let it go.

The final heat looked a lot like the second one. Ladouceur took a commanding chip lead and again he decided the match with {7-Spades}{J-Spades}. This time, it was a preflop all-in against the ace-eight from Busquet. Ladouceur made a full house on the turn and took down the victory.

In the next match, Byron Kaverman took on Tom Marchese. Kaverman started strong and had his opponent from the New York Rounders on the ropes early on. Marchese fought hard in the first heat and managed to come back a couple of times, but eventually, Kaverman won the first heat. His queens held up on a {2-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{10-Spades}{J-Diamonds}{A-Diamonds}-board and Marchese paid off his last chips with jack-nine.

The second heat looked a lot like the first one. Marchese was down, but found a comeback, but this time, he could finish it off. He made a straight on the turn with king-nine and that was enough to beat Kaverman’s ace-queen.

The Sao Paulo Mets player recovered very well from this defeat. Although Kaverman lost some chips early on in the final heat, he finally came out victorious. Thanks to a king on the flop his king-nine won against Marchese’s ace-ten and Kaverman could celebrate a 2-1 win.

The third and final match was played betweenJake Cody and Jonathan Jaffe. Both Cody's Las Vegas Moneymakers and the San Francisco Rush, represented by Jaffe, needed the points badly.

Cody was the first one to score some of them. He was in charge of the whole first heat and took it down when his jack-seven flopped trips against Jaffe's pocket deuces.

It didn't take long before the match was level again. Jaffe woke up with aces in the fifth hand of the second heat. Cody had {9-Clubs}{6-Clubs} and decided to bluff both, turn and river, on a {3-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}-board. His second barrel was for all of his remaining chips and Jaffe secured some points for his team.

The last heat was a tough battle. Jaffe struck first but Cody came back with a nice double up to take over the chip lead. That lead didn't last long. Jaffe ran over Cody in a couple of hands and in the end, he found his opponent all-in with jack-ten. Jaffe had king-seven of hearts. Cody flopped a pair of jacks, but Jaffe rivered a flush to grab the win.

There aren't any position changes in the Americas conference standing. Thanks to Marc-Andre Ladouceur's victory the Montreal Nationals are now leading by six points. Byron Kaverman helped the Sao Paulo Mets to get a three-point lead on the New York Rounders in the battle for third place. The San Francisco Rush and Las Vegas Moneymakers remain fifth and sixth.

Those two teams need to score a lot of points in the upcoming weeks because in five weeks the regular season will be over and only the top four qualifies for the playoffs.

Jonathan Jaffe Clinches Win in Tight Match

This third and final heads-up match of the day was a very tight and entertaining battle. In the end, Jonathan Jaffe came out on top.

In the deciding heat, he got Jake Cody all-in for his last 20,000 chips with {K-Hearts}{7-Hearts}. Cody was holding {J-Diamonds}{10-Spades} and needed help to survive.

The flop gave him some help with {Q-Hearts}{J-Hearts}{5-Spades} but it also gave Jaffe a flush draw. The {8-Spades} on the turn was save for Cody, but the {A-Hearts} on the river wasn't.

Jaffe got there with the flush and took home the win. With his 2-1 victory over Cody, Jaffe scores six points for the San Francisco Rush. They now have 113 points for the Americas conference. The Rush are still in fifth, ten points behind the New York Rounders. Only the top four will qualify for the playoffs.

Jake Cody scored only three points for the Las Vegas Moneymakers. With only five weeks to go in the Global Poker League, it will be very difficult for the Moneymakers to make the playoff. With 100 points they are 23 points behind the fourth place that will give access to the finale.

Jaffe Takes Back the Lead

With 13,300 already in the middle and the board reading {2-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}{3-Hearts}, Jake Cody put in a bet of 9,750. Jonathan Jaffe check-raised to 21,150 with {A-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} for a turned straight. Cody had {9-Hearts}{4-Hearts} and hesitated for a moment and told the crowd he "didn't expect a raise there". He finally made the call.

The river was the {6-Clubs} and Jaffe shoved all-in for 20,000. Cody was surprised again telling he "was going to bluff that". Now he got off the hook and folded.

A big chip lead for Jaffe but this match isn't over yet.

Cody Doubles Up

Jake Cody found his much-needed double up and has taken over the chip lead.

He opened to 2,400 with {9-Hearts}{Q-Clubs} and Jonathan Jaffe called with his {7-Spades}{10-Clubs}.

The flop came down {Q-Hearts}{10-Spades}{3-Hearts} and Jaffe check-called a 2,800-bet. The turn was the {4-Clubs} and Cody shoved all-in for almost 15,000 chips. Jaffe called, but didn't get any help on the river.

Overbet Works Out

Jonathan Jaffe is in command in this third heat. He is closing in on a win, but there is still a long way to go.

He improved his chip lead by overbetting the river with {A-Clubs}{J-Hearts}. On a {J-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{9-Spades}{2-Clubs}-board, he fired out a bet of 8,000 with 7,000 in the middle. Jake Cody took the bait and called with {9-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}.

Some Help for Jaffe

The last heat of the night started a couple of minutes ago and Jonathan Jaffe called for some help.

We saw his cat supporting him in the first heat, but now his little kid was watching him play the first couple of hands.

After that, his dog came in to give him some advice, will it help him to win this match?

So far, he is of to a good start in heat three.

Aces Help Jaffe Levelling the Match

The second heat of this match lasted just five hands. Jake Cody got out of line with {9-Clubs}{6-Clubs} and Jonathan Jaffe was waiting for him with {A-Clubs}{A-Hearts}.

Jaffe raised to 1,000 with his aces. Cody threw in a big three-bet to 4,500 chips. Jaffe came back with a small four-bet to 8,000 and Cody decided he couldn't fold to such a small bet.

The flop came down {3-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} and Jaffe checked behind to set a trap. Cody did fell for it and bet 10,400 on the {Q-Clubs}-turn. Jaffe called and the {J-Diamonds} came on the river. Cody tanked for a while before shoving all-in for 31,000 and Jaffe quickly called to level the match.

Three points for both teams now, but that doesn't help them much in the race for the playoff spots.

Cody Takes Down First Heat

Jake Cody has won the first heat of his heads-up battle against Jonathan Jaffe.

The Las Vegas Moneymakers player shoved all-in with {J-Spades}{7-Diamonds} and Jaffe, with only 17,000 chips left, called with {2-Hearts}{2-Clubs}.

The deuces couldn't win the coin flip as the flop gave Cody two jacks: {J-Hearts}{J-Clubs}{10-Clubs}. The {3-Hearts}-turn and {A-Hearts}-river didn't help Jaffe.

Cody raked in the important first three points for his team.
