16 Players Remain of Penultimate Day of the 2018 PokerStars and Monte-Carlo©Casino EPT Main Event

Ole Schemion brings a commanding stack into Day 5
Ole Schemion brings a commanding stack into Day 5

At noon local time, cards will be back in the air for Day 5 of the 2018 PokerStars and Monte-Carlo©Casino EPT €5,300 EPT Main Event. It's taken four days to whittle a field of 777 entries down to its last 16 hopefuls. Each of them is already guaranteed a slice of €31,700 of the €3,768,450 prize pool, but all eyes are locked on that first place prize of €712,000 and coveted EPT title that awaits the winner on Friday, May 4.

No fewer than three former EPT champions are still in the hunt to become a two-time EPT winner: Adrian Mateos, Patrik Antonius and Davidi Kitai. Mateos could even accomplish a rarer feat, as he won this very same event back in 2015. However, the biggest stack going into the penultimate day belongs to Tomas Jozonis. A set-fueled day on Day 4 vaulted Jozonis to the top of the leaderboard, where he sits alone with 4,075,000.

Jozonis is far from winning it outright, as he has to navigate his way through a stacked table containing the likes of Ole Schemion (2,630,000), the aforementioned Antonius (1,505,000) and Mateos (1,495,000), as well as Team PokerStars Pro Andre Akkari (960,000). Davor Lanini (900,000), Sadri Saleh (610,000) and Dan Abouaf (595,000) are the short stacks at the table.

The improbable run of qualifier Krisztian Gyorgyi is still going on, as the Hungarian sits in 5th place with 1,770,000. Gyorgyi has no previously recorded live cashes and qualified for this event for just €5 on PokerStars. Gyorgyi will take place at the other table and has to deal with the likes of Javier Fernandez (2,120,000), Honglin Jiang (1,890,000), David Peters (1,675,000), Stefan Huber (975,000), Kitai (825,00), Josip Simunic (690,000) and Nicolas Dumont (500,000).

There's a little over 5 minutes remaining in level 22 with blinds of 10,000/20,000 and a big blind ante of 20,000. Levels will be 90 minutes each for the remainder of the tournament and play will continue until 6 players are left, who will then return on Friday, May 4, to play for the title and the first place prize of €712,000.

Don't miss any of the action right here on PokerNews as we get one step closer to crowning the PokerStars and Monte-Carlo©Casino EPT Main Event champion!

Peters Takes Most of It

There was just one flop on the outer table in the remaining five minutes of the level while David Peters claimed the blinds and antes twice. In the last hand of the level, Peters raised to 45,000 and Honglin Jiang called in the big blind. On a flop of {Q-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{2-Spades}, Jiang checked and folded to a bet of 40,000.

Dan Abouaf open-shoved 595,000 from middle position, a shove of nearly 24 big blinds, and Saleh called in the big blind with 590,000 total.

Dan Abouaf: {A-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}
Sadri Saleh: {A-Spades}{K-Hearts}

Abouaf went from three to four outs on the {10-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{K-Spades} flop but neither the {A-Clubs} turn nor {2-Diamonds} river was the queen he needed. Abouaf was left with just 5,000, half a small blind, literally a chip and a chair.

The next hand, Abouaf got his final chip in with {A-Clubs}{9-Hearts} and Andre Akkari isolated with {A-Spades}{10-Hearts} to get it heads-up. The flop was {6-Spades}{4-Hearts}{9-Clubs} to pair up Abouaf, but after the {J-Clubs} turn and {10-Spades} river Akkari's best hand preflop was best at showdown.

Abouaf was the first player out on Day 5 and received €31,700.

Pocket Aces for Jiang

Nível 23 : 10,000/25,000, 25,000 ante
Honglin Jiang
Honglin Jiang

Honglin Jiang limped in from the small blind and Stefan Huber checked his option. On the {J-Spades}{8-Hearts}{8-Clubs} flop, Jiang bet 40,000, Huber raised to 125,000 and Jiang called. The turn was the {K-Diamonds} and Jiang check-called 250,000 from Huber.

The {J-Diamonds} on the river double-paired the board and both players rapped the table in quick succession. Jiang showed {A-Spades}{A-Diamonds} for aces up and Huber flung his hand in the muck.

Andre Akkari Eliminated in 15th Place (€35,500)

Andre Akkari raised to 55,000 from under the gun, Patrik Antonius three-bet from the cutoff, Akkari four-bet to 455,000, leaving himself with 520,000 behind. Antonius shoved and Akkari called.

Andre Akkari: {Q-Spades}{Q-Hearts}
Patrik Antonius: {A-Spades}{A-Diamonds}

Like yesterday against Ole Schemion, the Team PokerStars Pro needed to spike another two-outer if he was to survive. It wasn't in the cards this time as the board ran out {5-Hearts}{K-Clubs}{5-Spades}{K-Hearts}{4-Hearts} to send Akkari home.

After finishing 5th at last year's PokerStars Championship Barcelona, Akkari now finished in 15th place and received €35,500.

Jiang and Peters Dominate Outer Table

Nível 23 : 10,000/25,000, 25,000 ante

Davidi Kitai's raise to 60,000 in the hijack was met by a three-bet to 180,000 by Honglin Jiang on the button and that shut down all further action.

David Peters then raised to 60,000 and Krisztian Gyorgyi called in the big blind. On the {A-Clubs}{K-Hearts}{6-Clubs} flop, the online qualifier from Hungary checked and folded to a bet of 45,000 by Peters.

Jiang raised to 60,000 and Peters three-bet to 180,000, a fold followed.

Soon after, Jiang made it 60,000 to go and Peters just called in late position. The flop came {A-Clubs}{J-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} and Jiang continued for 65,000, Peters called. After the {8-Diamonds} turn, the second barrel of Jiang was for 150,000 and Peters folded.

The next hand Peters made it 60,000 to go and was called by Jiang in the big blind. On a {A-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{7-Spades} flop, Jiang checked and Peters took down the pot with a bet of 50,000.

Nicolas Dumont moved all in from the button and claimed the blinds and antes.

Fernandez Straightens Mateos

Javier Fernandez
Javier Fernandez

Javier Fernandez raised to 55,000 from the cutoff with {K-Hearts}{10-Hearts}, Adrian Mateos three-bet to 170,000 on the button with {5-Hearts}{4-Hearts} and Fernandez called.

The flop was {Q-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}{5-Spades}, giving both players something to work with. Fernandez checked to Mateos, who bet 125,000, and he called the bet.

The {A-Spades} on the turn gave Fernandez the mortal lock on the hand and he checked a second time. Mateos bet 350,000 and Fernandez just smoothly called.

The river paired the board with the {A-Hearts} and Fernandez checked a third time. Mateos, with 680,000 behind, opted to check back and preserved his remaining stack.
