The last day of the last event of the PokerStars European Poker Tour was always going to be one that would dominate headlines. But besides the fact that the world's biggest tour concluded, it was Jasper Meijer van Putten's domination on the final table that made for a memorable day in the Czech Republic's capital of Prague.

The Dutchman winning one of the biggest ever EPT events wasn't the only big news on the final day of the Main Event. David Peters, by finishing third, overtook Fedor Holz in the Global Poker Index Player of the Year race.

The final day began with just six remaining players. Whoever would win, it would make for a great story. Would the EPT crown its fourth female champion? Would the guy win that dominated live poker in 2016 finish with a bang? Would the short stack come from behind? Would the online qualifier with a single cash on his résumé take down the title? Or would the EPT finally get its first Hungarian winner after 13 long and storied seasons?

After Vicky Coren twice, Sandra Najoks and Liv Boeree, Sam Cohen would not become the fourth female EPT champion as she was the first to fall. In the third hand of the final table, it was already all over. She flopped top two with queen-eight and check-raised David Peters. Peters wasn't ready to say goodbye to his pocket nines just yet and called in position. Wouldn't you know it, the turn was a nine and Cohen shoved for what was over the size of the pot. Peters called and dodged queens, eights and hearts on the river to knock out Cohen.

The last-ever EPT wouldn't be headlined by the shorty making the epic comeback either as he was the next with his head on the chopping block. Marius Gierse got it in with fives against the nines of Marton Czuczor and failed to improve on the flop, turn and river.

With the departure of Sergei Petrushevskii, the event missed on the classic "qualifier wins big event" storyline as well. Petrushevskii, who had just a single cash of €153 prior to reaching the final table, fell in fourth place for €284,550 when he four-bet shoved ace-seven cold and ran into the queens of Meijer van Putten.

Deal talks started as soon as it got three-handed. Peters, who had secured the lead in the GPI Player of the Year race at that time, demanded some extra money if they were to agree. Meijer van Putten and Czuczor both wanted to give some up for the man with the most experience, and a deal seemed secured. Czuczor agreed to give up "fifteen" and Meijer van Putten was OK with giving up €8,000. The three shook hands and Czuczor was congratulated by his friends and received multiple kisses from his girlfriend on making the biggest score of his career.

Then, Czuczor clarified to Meijer van Putten and Peters that he meant €1,500, not €15,000 and the deal was off. Play resumed.

While Peters had the most experience and presumably was the least nervous playing for huge money, the cards didn't go his way. The situation three-handed lasted for multiple hours with Meijer van Putten really showcasing what he was made of. He had been a bit quiet and tight maybe till that moment, but with the chip lead in front of him he showed the table and the rest of the world he knew how to play the role of big stack bully. While his competition was stiff, he got away with some tricky bluffs, fired some great value bets and made some nice laydowns.

The biggest hand early on was one where he placed a huge overbet bluff on the river against Marton Czuczor. The latter felt something was iffy, but he couldn't call and laid down the better, albeit rather weak, hand.

Eventually, the new GPI POY leader was to fall and the EPT didn't get an A-list celebrity poker player as its final champion. Peters played an incredible game all day with laydowns that had the poker commentators in awe, but it wasn't enough. In the end, now very short, he called all in with queen-seven. He was up against ace-queen and wouldn't come out ahead. He hit a seven on the flop but the ace on the river did him in.

With just two players remaining, talks of a deal resurfaced. Again, the two couldn't agree. Czuczor then won some pots to get about even in chips, and this time they did find common ground for an agreement and shook hands on a deal.

There was still plenty of money left in the middle with €50,000 to play for. While Czuczor had won some pots before the deal, after the deal was struck it was mostly the Meijer van Putten show. He grinded his opponent down to the point where he had just 20 or so big blinds left and needed to make a move. In the final hand, Meijer van Putten raised with king-jack and Czuczor shoved with deuces. Meijer van Putten called and hit a jack to win it all.

Instead of a Hungarian lifting an EPT Main Event trophy for the first and last time, it was a man who doubled his stack early on Day 1 and then blinded off the rest of the day while battling food poisoning. Dutchmman Jasper Meijer van Putten is the 115th and last-ever PokerStars European Poker Tour champion.

The European Poker Tour ceases to exist; next year, the tour rebrands to PokerStars Championships and PokerStars Festivals. After 115 events and 114 winners and over $1 billion in prize money distributed, the biggest poker tour on the planet goes global and gets a new name. The first ever PokerStars Championship is taking place in the Bahamas Jan. 6-14. PokerNews will be on the floor in Paradise Island for feature articles and Main Event live reporting from the event formerly known as the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure.

Hand #164: Jasper Meijer van Putten opened with {k-Clubs}{j-Clubs} to 700,000. Marton Czuczor held {2-Diamonds}{2-Clubs} in the big blind and jammed for 8,025,000. Meijer van Putten called after about 15 seconds of thought. Czuczor looked less than thrilled with the situation, and a {j-Spades}{3-Clubs}{q-Diamonds} flop left him in desperate need of a deuce. The turn was a {5-Hearts} so it had to be the river. The dealer burned and turned the {9-Diamonds} to end the tournament.

Hand #128: Jasper Meijer van Putten decided to fold his button and action was on Marton Czuczor in the small blind. He looked down on {A-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs} and jammed to put the pressure on David Peters.

David Peters held {q-Spades}{7-Diamonds} and tanked for quite a bit before he eventually called for his last 3,075,000.

Peters was behind but the flop came {7-Clubs}{10-Spades}{2-Clubs} to give Peters the edge. The turn was the {4-Hearts} and Peters was a single card away from doubling up. That wasn't in the cards, though, as the {a-Clubs} vompleted the board and Peters was done in third place.

Marton Czuczor celebrated reaching the heads up with his friends on the rail while David Peters silently left the stage.

Hand #38: Jasper Meijer van Putten found {Q-Spades}{Q-Diamonds} under the gun and raised to 400,000.

Marton Czuczor with {K-Hearts}{J-Diamonds} on the button three-bet to 1.15 million.

Sergei Petrushevskii, with the {A-Clubs}{7-Clubs} in the small blind and a stack of 3.77 million in front of him, pushed all in. David Peters folded his button right away but Jasper Meijer van Putten wasn't following suit. The Dutchman reshoved for over 8 million and Czuczor got out of the way instantly.

The flop came {9-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}, not doing much for Petrushevskii. The {8-Spades} on the turn gave Meijer van Putten a straight and only a river queen could chop it now.

Instead the {J-Spades} hit and Sergei Petrushevskii was out the door in fourth place for €284,550.

The remaining three players are guaranteed €397,300 and talks of a deal started. Jasper Meijer van Putten leads, but David Peters and Marton Czuczor are not far behind.

Hand #22: Marton Czuczor in the cutoff found {9-Spades}{9-Diamonds} and the start of day chip leader opened for 280,000.

Marius Gierse, on the button with {5-Hearts}{5-Diamonds} and a total stack of 2,940,000, jammed. Sergei Petrushevskii with the {J-Spades}{5-Clubs} asked for a count but folded, David Peters followed suit en tossed in his cards as well.

Czuczor called instantly.

The flop in the 6,120,000-pot came {A-Spades}{A-Hearts}{6-Spades}, not doing much for anyone. Neither did the {4-Diamonds} on the turn and {4-Clubs} on the river and Marius Gierse said his goodbyes.

Gierse received €203,800 for his deep run. The remaining four players are guaranteed €284,550 from here on out.

Hand #3: Marton Czuczor raised again, this time with {10-Hearts}{10-Clubs}. His 280,000-raise was called by David Peters on the button who held {9-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}. Sam Cohen over called with {Q-Clubs}{8-Hearts} on the big blind.

The flop came {8-Spades}{Q-Hearts}{2-Hearts} and Cohen and Czuczor checked. Peters bet 350,000 into 1,020,000 and Cohen raised to 1 million. Czuczor folded right away. Peters tanked for some time before he called.

With 3,020,000 in the pot, the {9-Hearts} hit the turn. Cohen had just over pot behind and shoved all in. Peters called right away.

Cohen needed a queen or a heart on the river. Her 25% hand did not materialize into a winner as the {7-Spades} completed the board.

Sam Cohen eliminated in 6th place, good for €145,900. The remaining five players are guaranteed €203,800.

Who'll Take Down the Last-Ever PokerStars EPT Title?

David Peters
David Peters

The final day of the PokerStars European Poker Tour. After over a decade of putting on some of the most prestigious tournaments in poker, building a rich history in crowning over 100 champions, and awarding over $1 billion in total prize money, PokerStars will retire the EPT name in favor of its planned PokerStars Championships and PokerStars Festivals.

All that remains is the minor matter of crowning the last Main Event champion. There are six contenders left for that crown out of 1,192 runners, none of whom have tasted the ultimate EPT glory before.

Foremost among them in reputation and results is American David Peters. The Ohio native has put together a truly remarkable 2016, with more than $6.8 million in cashes, roughly doubling his career live total, and his first World Series of Poker bracelet. Adding the final EPT title to his trophy case would be the cherry on top of a year to remember.

However, he does trail Hungarian Marton Czuczor, who enters as the chip leader with just shy of 10 million. Czuczor will cede position on most hands to his American rival, though, since they're seated with Czuczor in Seat 1 and Peters in Seat 2.

The other contenders are Sam Cohen, Jasper Meijer van Putten, Marius Gierse and Sergei Petrushevskii. You can read more about each of them in the profiles below, courtesy of PokerStars.

Day 6 will get underway at noon local time, with play streamed via the PokerStars TV team on a one-hour delay. You can check out the action right here on PokerNews.com. The blinds will be 60,000/120,000/20,000 when play resumes, and cards and chips will continue to fly until the final EPT Main Event winner is determined.
