Aliaksei Boika Leads Final 30 in Record-Setting High Roller

Nível 21 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Aliaksei Boika
Aliaksei Boika

On Sunday, Season 12 of the European Poker Tour continued with Day 2 action in the record-setting €10,300 High Roller event. It was a long day of poker at Casino Barcelona, as the tournament played past its originally scheduled 10 levels of play. After 11 full levels, it was Aliaksei Boika who bagged up the chip lead with 1.985 million.

This event drew a total of 479 entries on Day 1 and was expected to grow bigger heading into Day 2. As registration was open until the start of the day, players were given the opportunity to try their hand once more or skip the opening day all together. Day 2 entries brought the total number up to 506, generating a total prize pool of €4,908,200. The top 71 players were guaranteed money with top prize being worth an astounding €947,300.

While Boika leads the field, the name on everyone's lips for the majority of the day was that of Spain's Adrian Mateos. Just four levels into the day, Mateos, who was already one of the big stacks, engaged in a massive confrontation with Georgios Karakousis. Mateos flopped top set with pocket eights and got Karakousis to fire into him drawing close to dead. This enormous pot brought Mateos' stack up to 855,000 and he continued to trend upward from there. At one point in the day, once he had well crossed the one-million chip mark, Mateos held double the next closest stack. He finished the day with 1.5 million, which is good for third overall in chips.

Some of the other notable names to return to the felt for Day 3 include Paul Tedeschi (913,000), Mike McDonald (818,000), Martin Finger (763,000), Jack Salter (672,000), Jeff Rossiter (608,000), Christoph Vogelsang (604,000), and Fedor Holz (397,000).

While these players all managed to survive an arduous day of poker, others were not as fortunate. The likes of Bryn Kenney, Paul Newey, Martin Jacobson, Ivan Luca, Haralabos Voulgaris, Pratyush Buddiga, Sam Greenwood, Marc-Andre Ladouceur, and Vanessa Selbst were just some of the players to fall before the money bubble was reached.

Jason Mercier looked poised to make the money and go for back-to-back deep runs in this event. Unfortunately for the Team PokerStars Pro, his hopes were dashed after a bad beat just before the bubble. Mercier found himself all in and at risk with the {a-Clubs}{a-Hearts} against Mateos' {a-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}. Mateos' hot streak continued, as he managed to flop a pair of kings and turn that into trips on the river. A dejected Mercier exited the tournament area without a payday and Mateos' domination was further solidified.

After a lengthy bubble process that lasted over an hour, it was ultimately Germany's Wilfried Harig who was the last player to go home without a payday. Harig was eliminated at the hands of PokerStars Team Pro Leo Fernandez while on the other side of the room, Daniel Erlandsson managed to squeak into the money with a stack of just 2,000 — or two antes.

Players to fall once the money bubble was burst include 2013 World Series of Poker Main Event champion Ryan Riess (71st), Davidi Kitai (69th), Angel Guillen (66th), Vitaly Lunkin (59th), Team PokerStars Pros Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier (55th) and Johnny Lodden (50th), Felix Stephensen (40th), Byron Kaverman (39th), and Team PokerStars Online Pro Isaac Haxton (36th).

Play will resume at 12:30 p.m. on Monday where the field will play down to a winner. As always, PokerNews will be on hand to provide all of the latest from the tournament felt, so stay tuned.

Day 2 Play Extended; Shortened Levels On Day 3

Following the conclusion of Level 19, play was momentarily suspended for tournament staff to address the players. According to the staff, they had crunched the numbers and because of the size of this tournament, it will likely play well into the early hours of the morning on Day 3. According to the math done by the tournament staff, the event should finish around 6 a.m. The tournament staff then informed the players that they would need to end around 2 a.m.

In order to combat this, the staff announced that they needed to take action.

Tournament staff gave the players the options of either extending Day 2 play by one level or two, or decreasing the length of the levels on Day 3. Each player had their own opinion on the matter, so this obviously turned into a somewhat lengthy process.

In the end, it was decided that one extra level would be played tonight and the levels on Day 3 would decrease from the standard 60 minutes to 55 minutes.

Mercier's Aces Cracked Two Off the Money

Nível 17 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Jason Mercier - Adrian Mateos
Jason Mercier - Adrian Mateos

Team PokerStars Pro Jason Mercier couldn't have asked for a better spot to get his money in. Unfortunately for him, the aces he held couldn't hold up to give him more than a full double.

From the hijack seat, Mercier raised to 16,000. Adrian Mateos was next to act in the cutoff seat, and he reraised to 46,000. Francois Billard was in the small blind and stuck in a reraise of his own to 98,000. Play slid back over to Mercier, and he went into the tank for a little bit. After about 30 seconds, Mercier announced that he was all in — a shove worth 373,000. Mateos had a look of surprise come over his face as his stared at Mercier. He then shifted his vision to Billard to get an eye on his stack. Then, Mateos announced that he was all in.

Billard was shocked and immediately sat back in his chair before squirming a little bit and sitting forward once again. He had just about 400,000 left after his four-bet, but seemed to know he had to fold. Although he didn't like it, Billard passed his cards to the muck with a pained look on his face. Later, Ryan Riess mentioned to us that Billard told the table he had folded two queens.

Mercier tabled the {A-Clubs}{A-Hearts} and was at risk. Mateos had the {A-Spades}{K-Diamonds} and was in some rough shape going to the flop.

The {K-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{2-Spades} kept Mercier in front with his pair of aces, but it did pair Mateos' king. That initial pair of kings would prove vital after the {8-Spades} hit the turn and the {K-Spades} fell on the river. With that, Mateos spiked trip kings to send Mercier out the door in 73rd place, just two spots off the money.

Mateos pulled in the pot and increased his stack to 1.625 million.

Adrian Mateos
Adrian Mateos

Adrian Mateos has stormed up the leaderboard, and he currently sits with a stack of over 1.1 million.

On the most recent big pot he pulled in, the young Spaniard fired 80,000 on the final board of {9-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{3-Spades}{5-Hearts}{6-Spades}. His opponent, Sergey Sergeev, tanked for a bit before making the call for just about half of his remaining stack. Mateos tabled the {7-Clubs}{6-Clubs} for a straight, and Sergeev showed the losing {10-Spades}{10-Clubs}.

Mateos Vaults into Chip Lead

Nível 14 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Adrian Mateos
Adrian Mateos

We picked up with the action to find Adrian Mateos and Georgios Karakousis heads up on a board of {8-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{10-Spades}. A massive pot was already built with well over 300,000 piled up in the middle of the table. Mateos was first to act and he checked fourth street. Karakousis moved all in for approximately 255,000 and Mateos snapped him off.

Mateos: {8-Clubs}{8-Hearts}
Karakousis: {7-Spades}{7-Hearts}

Mateos was in a dominating position with his flopped set against Karakousis's pocket sevens. Karakousis made a set on the river with the {7-Diamonds}, but it was not enough to best Mateos. Karakousis hit the rail and Mateos assumed the role of tournament chip lead with about 855,000.

O'Dwyer Eliminated by Ravnsbaek

Steve O'Dwyer - Eliminated
Steve O'Dwyer - Eliminated

The board read {j-Hearts}{8-Spades}{q-Diamonds}{2-Spades} when we found Steve O'Dwyer and Simon Ravnsbaek engaged in heads up action. O'Dwyer had first action and he moved out a bet of 5,400. Ravnsbaek thought for a moment before reaching for chips and moving out a call.

The board paired on the river with the {j-Diamonds}, prompting O'Dwyer to bet 14,000. Ravnsbaek announced an all in raise, causing O'Dwyer to remove his earphones to confirm the action. He instantly called, showing {10-Hearts}{9-Hearts} for a straight to the queen. Ravnsbaek had that beat, however, with {2-Diamonds}{2-Clubs} for a full house of deuces full of jacks. O'Dwyer was eliminated from play and Ravnsbaek increased his stack to about 152,000.

Will We See the Field Reach 500 Entries in the €10,300 High Roller?

Welcome back to PokerNews' coverage of the record-breaking €10,300 High Roller from the 2015 European Poker Tour Barcelona festival.

After Day 1 saw 479 total entries generated, a new high was achieved. That number is only going to grow as registration and reentry will remain open until just about the start of Day 2. That should lend to a handful of new competitors joining the field, plus a few reentries from those that busted on Day 1. The additions could see the field size surpass 500, which would be remarkable.

Leading the pack into Day 2 is Ping San Chan with 367,500. Hot on his heals are Nathan Gozlan with 326,600 and Wilfried Hariq with 315,200. Other notables that advanced to Day 2 with healthy stacks were Angel Guilen, Fedor Holz, Adrian Mateos, Vanessa Selbst, Nicholas Rampone, Martin Jacobson, and Dani Stern.

Day 2 is set to commence at 12:30 p.m. local time. Once registration closes, field size and prize pool information will be made available. Until then, stay tuned for continued coverage to begin shortly.
