It's 2014... It's PCA... It's a $100,000 Buy-in! What More Could You Want?

Welcome to the extravagant kickoff of the 2014 poker year!

Once again, PokerNews is back at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, and our live reporting squad will be on hand to provide up-to-the-minute coverage of poker's largest festival outside of the World Series of Poker.

Every January, players from around the globe travel to Paradise Island in the Bahamas with hopes of winning millions of dollars, but for those here to start things off in the first event — the $100,000 Super High Roller — they are likely already millionaires (or billionaires) a few times over. With a hefty six-figure buy-in and a star-studded field, this event has players whiping the sweat from their palms and fans salivating with every all-in shove.

Last year, the $100,000 Super High Roller attracted an astounding 59 entries, and generated a prize pool of $5,724,180. The field was made up from 47 unique players and 12 reentries, with the top eight spots making the money. Finishing on top was Scott Seiver, and he landed a first-place prize of $2,003,480.

This year, much of the same is expected with a massive prize pool up for grabs and big names galore. We've already been told that over 40 players have been confirmed, including Jason Mercier, Daniel Negreanu, Antonio Esfandiari, Dan Smith, Jonathan Duhamel, Sorel Mizzi, Vanessa Selbst, Steve O'Dwyer, Chris Klodnicki, Mike Watson, Matt Glantz, Igor Kurganov, Timothy Adams, and Jason Koon.

Also slated to play is reigning WSOP Main Event champion Ryan Riess, who will aim to keep his hot streak rolling and silence the detractors who took insult to Riess' claim that he's the "best player in the world." One of those critics was Seiver, the reigning champion of this event.

Another high-profile person taking part will be Guy Laliberté. The Cirque Du Soleil founder, philanthropist and recreational poker player is considered by many to be "dead money" in these types of tournaments, but he held his own in the largest buy-in event ever in 2012. Laliberté finished fifth out of 40 players in the $1,000,000 buy-in Big One for One Drop at the WSOP, donating all of his $1,834,666 in winnings to the One Drop Foundation.

The action is scheduled to kick off at 12 p.m. local time, and each player will start with a bank of 250,000 in chips. The first level of the day will be 500/1,000/100, and levels will last 60 minutes each.

With the cards set to be in the air in less than two hours, the anticipation is growing by the minute. Stay tuned right here to PokerNews.com for all your live reporting needs. This is surely one you don't want to miss!

ElkY and Juanda Out

Nível 3 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
John Juanda
John Juanda

Team PokerStars Pro Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier and John Juanda have both been eliminated.

Grospellier was the first to go, and he was dispatched during a hand that ran over into the last break by Justin Bonomo. Bonomo moved to roughly 550,000 in chips with the elimination.

Juanda just went out in Level 3 to the hands of Max Altergott, winner of the 2013 PokerStars and Monte-Carlo® Casino EPT Grand Final €100,000 Super High Roller. Altergott moved all in on a board reading {9-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{A-Spades}{2-Diamonds}, and Juanda called. Altergott tabled the {A-Diamonds}{A-Hearts} for a full house, aces over deuces, and Juanda mucked.

After busting, Juanda inquired about how to reenter and confirmed with event staff that he could reenter all the way up until the start of play tomorrow, so we'll likely see him back in the mix at least one more time.

Watson Docks His Boat in Schemion's Harbor

Nível 4 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Ole Schemion
Ole Schemion

Mike Watson checked to reigning Global Poker Index Player of the Year Ole Schemion on the {K-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{6-Clubs} flop. Schemion fired a bet of 12,000, and Watson made the call.

The turn paired the board with the {8-Diamonds}, and both players checked to see the {7-Clubs} put a fourth club on the board on the river. Watson checked, and Schemion fired a bet of 31,000 with approximately 275,000 in chips behind. Watson took a few moments, then check-raised to 111,000. This sent Schemion into the tank, and tank he did for several long minutes.

"I should've went to the bathroom when he raised," whispered Fabian Quoss to our reporter from the table.

Another minute or two passed after Quoss' comment, then Schemion made the call. Watson tabled two red kings — the {K-Hearts}{K-Diamonds} — for a full house, and Schemion mucked his hand.

Laliberté in Trouble Again

Nível 4 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Guy Laliberté
Guy Laliberté

With around 200,000 in the middle, and the board completed {k-Spades}{3-Hearts}{a-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{j-Spades}, Guy Laliberté fired out 95,000.

Philipp Gruissem, his opponent, let out a very long sigh. The German eventually called, and the French Canadian turned over {a-Spades}{10-Spades} for a pair of aces with a ten kicker. Gruissem tabled {a-Diamonds}{j-Clubs} for two pair, aces and jacks, and was shipped the pot.

Koon Has Heart(s)

Nível 5 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante
Jason Koon
Jason Koon

Antonio Esfandiari popped it to 5,300 from under the gun, Jason Koon three-bet to 18,600 out of the small blind, and the Magician four-bet to 42,100. Koon called.

The dealer spread {8-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{8-Clubs}, Koon check-called a bet of 33,300, and the turn brought a third heart - the {7-Hearts}. Koon checked, Esfandiari announced all in, and Koon snapped off the 116,800-chip wager.

Esfandiari: {a-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}
Koon: {a-Hearts}{4-Hearts}

Esfandiari was drawing to the case ace or one of the two remaining eights in the deck, but neither came as the {q-Spades} completed the board. Koon doubled to 390,000 chips, while Esfandiari fell to 115,000.

Shak's Turn to Crack Esfandiari's Aces; Latter Busts

Nível 6 : 1,500/3,000, 400 ante
Antonio Esfandiari
Antonio Esfandiari

We're not sure if the money went in preflop or on the flop, but when we arrived at the table, Antonio Esfandiari was all in and at risk for around 120,000 with {a-}{a-}. Dan Shak had him at risk with {q-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}, and Esfandiari was in great shape to double on a board of {j-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{10-Spades}{7-Clubs}.

The {q-Spades} spiked on the river, however, and Shak recorded the KO with a set of queens.

These two players have a history of crazy hands against one another, dating back to the 2010 World Series of Poker Europe. We'll keep an eye out to see whether or not Esfandiari reenters the tournament.

No More Negreanu -- For Now

Daniel Negreanu busts
Daniel Negreanu busts

Daniel Negreanu moved all in for around 100,000 on a flop of {5-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} holding {8-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}, and Philipp Gruissem immediately called with {a-Clubs}{j-Hearts}.

"Good game," Negreanu joked, alluding to the fact that he's had Gruissem's number in all-in pots.

Kid Poker didn't improve enough on the turn ({k-Hearts}) or the river ({7-Spades}), however, and was eliminated.

"Finally!" Gruissem blurted.

Negreanu hinted that he would reenter, and we will patiently wait for the return of the Team PokerStars Pro.

Seiver and Koon Clash

Nível 8 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Jason Koon
Jason Koon

Over 250,000 was already in the middle by the time Jason Koon and Scott Seiver reached the turn. Seiver checked with the board reading {6-Spades}{a-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}, and Koon tossed forward five green T25,000 chips, betting 125,000.

Seiver considered the bet for a few minutes, then tossed in a handful of his own green chips.

The {4-Spades} completed the board, Seiver checked once again, and Koon reached for a tower of blue T5,000 chips. He added a single green chip on top, and slid forward 125,000.

This time, Seiver tanked for ages. Well over 10 minutes. The American shifted in his chair over a dozen times, talking to himself and his neighbor, Koon. He eventually apologized, and then a few minutes later he tossed his cards into the muck.

Negreanu Busts... Again

Nível 8 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Daniel Negreanu
Daniel Negreanu

Daniel Negreanu has just busted... again. After busting just about 10 minutes prior, Negreanu lost out for a second time.

On the final board of {K-Spades}{9-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{A-Clubs}, Daniel Colman moved all in against Negreanu. After tanking for a bit of time, Negreanu looked to the tournament clock, saw that there was about 40 minutes left in the day, and said, "This might be one of those special rebuy moments."

After another minute or two, Negreanu stuck his chips in to make the call. Colman tabled the {9-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}, and Negreanu couldn't beat it. Colman was all in for 121,500, and Negreanu had exactly 121,500 left in his stack. Negreanu mucked his hand and was off to the ail, although he did say he would likely be back for tomorrow's Day 2.
