Berglund Holds Massive Lead After Day 2 of EPT Sanremo Main Event

Nível 14 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante
Lukas Berglund

The 2014 PokerStars.it European Poker Tour Sanremo continued today with Day 2 action from the Casino Sanremo on the Italian Riviera. There were 316 players still in contention for the title at the start of the day, and with no further players taking the option to buy in the prize pool was announced. A total number of 556 entrants generated a €2,480,872 prize pool with €476,100 going to the eventual winner and 79 players being paid.

After six levels of play, Lukas Berglund from Sweden leads the Day 2 field with 700,600. Berglund ran well all day including a hand where he called a four-bet preflop shove from Marcos Panque and his {10-Spades}{10-Hearts} held against {A-Clubs}{k-Spades} on a final board of {10-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{3-Spades}{2-Clubs}{4-Clubs}. Not long after that he busted Elesion Tusha who held {a-Diamonds}{k-Hearts} when he flopped a set with {j-Clubs}{j-Hearts} on a board that ran out {j-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{5-Spades}.

Berglund is followed by Thiago Crema De Macedo from Brazil in second place with 482,400 and Raul Mestre from Spain is in third with 473,300.

Liv Boeree’s quest for a second EPT title at the venue of her first triumph came to an end fairly early on when she got her short stack in with a big ace against [Removed:17]’s {a-}{9-}, but she was outdrawn here hopes of winning the title for a second time came to an end.

Birthday boy Sorel Mizzi managed to double up on the feature table, but he would later bust losing a flip to bust. He jokingly described it as the worst birthday ever.

The action sped up as the day went on and by the halfway point a third of the starting field had been eliminated with 199 still left fighting it out. Team PokerStars Pro Vicky Coren had a great day which included busting Kevin MacPhee when her {a-}{k-} won a flip against his {q-}{q-} to shoot her over 100,000. She won numerous pots throughout the day and ended with 162,400.

[Removed:17], who led at the start of the day after finishing Day 1b as chip leader, ended with 280,000 chips. However, the Day 1a chip leader, Cristiano Guerra, busted in one of the last hands of the day. He was left short and got it in with {k-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} but was called by Artem Romanov's {7-Clubs}{7-Spades} and the pair held.

The most startling hand of the day was surely on the feature table where, after a series of preflop raises, Gianluca Petrone from Italy six-bet jammed and got called by Canadian Shyam Srinivasan. They were both the big stacks at the table and whoever won would be the tournament chip leader. Srinivasan tabled {a-Diamonds}{a-Spades} and Petrone showed {5-Clubs}{4-Clubs}. The cards ran out {4-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}. Srinivasan shot into the lead and ended the day with close to 300k.

Victor Ramdin had a very swingy day, starting short before running his stack right up the leader board, though losing a flip he faded away towards the end of the day finishing on 56,600.

PokerStars Team Pro Johnny Lodden was another one who had an up-and-down day. He started well but then in Level 13 he lost a big pot when his {6-Diamonds}{6-Spades} lost a race against {a-Clubs}{q-Diamonds} only to more than double up shortly after when he got it in with {k-Diamonds}{q-Spades} on a flop of {3-Hearts}{k-Clubs}{j-Clubs} against the draw of Tommaso Briotti who had {a-Clubs}{10-Clubs}. The turn {j-Diamonds} and river {7-Spades} bricked out and Lodden’s top pair held. He returns tomorrow with 185,000.

Other notables to look out for tomorrow include Olivier Busquet (387,900), Michael Tureniec (212,100), Mathew Frankland (165,800) and PokerStars Team Online's Mickey Petersen (164,700)

The final tally of Day 2 survivors was 115 players, all of whom will return when play resumes here at Noon local time tomorrow. That is when the tense money bubble will burst sending a further 36 players home empty handed.

Tank Call From Praninskas

Nível 14 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante

Mitch Johnson opened the action and Boutros Naim attempted to flat call but instead miss clicked and made a tiny three-bet. In the big blind, Rytis Praninskas four-bet to 19,200 and the initial raiser folded. Naim moved all in for what looked like 69,000 and Praninskas tank called:

Praninskas: {A-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}
Naim: {A-Clubs}{10-Spades}

On the {J-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{4-Hearts} flop the lead of Lithuanian took an even stronger lead than preflop, the {7-Clubs} turn guaranteed the seat open. A meaningless {K-Spades} river completed the board and one hand later the table bagged up for the day.

Three More Hands

Nível 14 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante

The tournament officials have just announced that the remaining players, of which there are approximately 118, will play three more hands at each table before wrapping things up here on Day 2.

We're headed out to the floor to catch any last-minute action and to compile a list of chip counts. Stay tuned for those and a full recap of the Day 2 action.

No Bounty For Heinz

Nível 14 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante

Gianluca Petrone got all but his last 11,400 chips in the middle of the table and was up against former World Series of Poker Main Event champion Pius Heinz. The German had invested 21,000 preflop and then put his opponent all in once the {6-Spades}{7-Hearts}{Q-Clubs} flop fell. Petrone called with {5-Spades}{5-Diamonds} and managed to score a double against {A-Hearts}{K-Spades}. Both the {9-Spades} turn and {4-Clubs} river failed to improve the hand of Heinz.
