Mathew Frankland from the UK is one of the players who were sat ready for action as the tournament began. He raised an early hand from the cut-off and an elderly gentleman on the button three-bet him. It folded back round to Frankland who mucked his cards.
His opponent showed and Frankland lost a few chips but banked the information.
At each EPT stop there is a handy program with all the details of the stop. Also in that packet is a welcome message from EPT President Edgar Stuchly, which we thought we'd share with you here:
Welcome to the EPT Sanremo Poker Festival.
We're very excited to add Sanremo to a growing list of EPT stops which roll a national poker tour into a European Poker Tour event. The PokerStars Italian Poker Tour is one of the most popular national tours around and Luca Pagano's team have created a fascinating accumulator format that has been well received. The IPT Main Event allows you to play multiple Day 1's giving you the chance to build a monster Day 2 stack. And that €770 event is just one of 43 events during the twelve-day festival.
The EPT Sanremo Poker Festival leads directly into the PokerStars and Monte-Carlo Casino EPT Grand Final, which boasts a €10,600 Main Event, a €100,000 Super High Roller and of course the €1,100 France Poker Series Main Event. There are also plenty of events with price tags that measure in the hundreds, not thousands so do make the trip whatever your bankroll. There's a fifty-fifty fusion live satellite into the Monaco Main Event taking place April 19, or you can try to qualify online at EPT sponsors PokerStars for a fraction of the price.
Belgian bracelet winner Michael Gathy just took his seat. A couple of tables down is Pier Paolo Fabretti, the Italian Team PokerStars Pro.
Sergio Castelluccio, who made a deep run in the WSOP Main Event last year (14th for $451,398) is playing today, and EPT Barcelona final tablist Eduard Bhaggoe (7th for €143,000), are here as well.
Angelina Rich from Australia has just three cashes in her life, and all have come here in Sanremo in the last few days.
Most recently, she topped a field of 24 players to win the EPT10 Sanremo €300 Women's Event
That tournament created a prize pool of €6,984.
Her other two cashes were ninth in April 9th's €220 No Limit Hold'em Turbo for €420, and 22nd in the April 11th's €220 No Limit Hold'em Turbo for €350.
Here's a look at the results from the Women's Event:
Markku Koplimaa, an Estonian PokerStars player, opened from middle position and was raised by Canadian PokerStars player Shyam Srinivasan. The blinds folded and Koplimaa now made it 1,650. Srinivasan made the call in position.
The flop fell . A continuation bet of 1,350 from Koplimaa saw his fellow pro tap the table and release his hand.
Rasmus Agerskov had a deep run in the high roller event of the EPT Vienna only a few weeks ago but ultimately missed out on the final table. The Dane has had a rough start to Day 1A here in Sanremo as well but just got some value out of a turned full house with on the board when betting 1200 on the river when his opponent called and mucked.
Ukranian PokerStars player Artem Metalidi has Christopher Lachave from France sat directly to his right. Lachave qualified via a live satellite and had been raising a fair few pots so far, gradually accumulating a growing stack of black T100 chips.
“Let’s see some flops sometimes.” Complained Metalidi good naturedly. “You raise, raise all the time.” Lachave just shrugged and smiled.
Pius Heinz has entered the building and just won a small pot with when value betting the river for 1,300. The German and his opponent, Vincenzo Scarpitti, checked the flop and turn, and then the Italian called the final bet before mucking. On the same table we also have Carter Swidler and Jorma Nuutinen.
Heinz' better half and "Friend of PokerStars" Natalie Hof is in as well and sits next to Aku Joentausta. Julian Stuer is one of the few other Germans in today's field.
The player in the cutoff made it 350 to go and next door neighbor Quentin Lecomte raised it up to 1,000. Mikhail Korotkikh in the small blind cold called and the cutoff called as well.
Korotkikh checked immediately as soon as the flop came out. The cutoff checked as well and Lecomte followed his preflop aggression up with a 1,700 bet. Korotkikh called, the cutoff folded.
Korotkikh checked again, almost before the hit the turn. Lecomte bet 3,500 and Korotkikh instantly called.
The fell on the river and Korotkikh mucked even before Lecomte did anything. The Frenchman laughed and took it down just like that.
