Cristiano Guerra Leads Day 1a Field; Selbst & Joentausta Advance

Nível 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
Cristiano Guerra
Cristiano Guerra

The PokerStars.it European Poker Tour Sanremo stop has always been a popular destination for poker players from around the world. Ever since the first time in 2008, the year Jason Mercier first showed his face to the poker world, the tournament has made for a packed Casinò di Sanremo.

At first the tournament was held right before the EPT Grand Final in Monte Carlo, making it the perfect destination for a three-week poker trip for lots of players who combined the back-to-back stops. The last two years the stop in Italy was moved to the first half of the EPT schedule, but this year it's back right before the big final in Monaco.

Day 1a of the tournament attracted 175 players, which was down from last year's 320 players. One of last year's participants was Ludovic Lacay, who wound up beating a total field of 797 player to win the trophy and the accompanying €744,910 first-place prize. Day 1b is expected to be quite a bit bigger, so we'll find out then if this year's Main Event can give last year's numbers a run for its money.

Despite the modest field, a lot of action was seen on the first of two starting days. There were plenty of familiar faces in the field including 2011 World Series of Poker Main Event champion Pius Heinz; bracelet winners Michael Gathy and Vanessa Selbst; and a slew of Team PokerStars Pro, which made for a competitive day of poker.

EPT Vienna winner Oleksii Khoroshenin was in action as well trying to win back-to-back EPTs. Unfortunately his quest came to an end in the last level of the night. After an open raise to 1,400, Pawel Brzeski three-bet to 4,000 in the small blind and the Vienna champion moved all in for ~14,000 one seat over. Brzeski looked him up with the {K-Hearts}{Q-Clubs} and was behind against the {A-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds} of his opponent; however, the {J-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{K-Clubs} flop provided the necessary help. The turn and river both blanked and that was it for the Ukrainian.

Blazej Przygorzewski from Poland was the first player to bust on Day 1a. His queens couldn't beat the ace-king of his opponent in an all-in preflop race. He was soon joined on the rail by tons of players. Coincidentally, another EPT Vienna winner, Michael Eiler, was one of them. Eiler lost his stack in the first level of the day, not able to get anything going and eventually busting with jack-eight to a set of sixes.

Another familiar face who wouldn't play eight 75-minute levels today was Kitty Kuo. The frequently tweeting Chinese player was seated next to Selbst throughout Day 1a. Her face and twitter stream showed a cry for compassion, but she wouldn't get it from the Team PokerStars Pro on her left. Selbst and Kuo were involved in the same hand several times, and Selbst got the better of it in most encounters. That included the last one when Kuo's ace-king failed to beat Selbst' queens.

kuo hui chenVanessa bust me out qq vs my AK ,sad now,I want to fly to London tmr !

Friend of PokerStars Natalie Hof tried her luck as well, but it wasn't meant to be. Hof, who won the ladies event in Vienna just two weeks ago, was eliminated when her ace-queen didn't improve against Jordan Westmorland's jacks. Her boyfriend, the aforementioned Heinz, nearly joined her on the rail. He got short early on, but would soon find new life. He doubled up with a turned flush against pocket queens, and then gathered even more chips in back-to-back hands winning huge pots. He ended the day with 80,100.

Poland's Jose Carlos Garcia, like Hof, wasn't lucky with ace-queen against jacks. Aku Joentausta was his executioner flopping a full house. Garcia, who won the €2,000 6-max turbo side-event here in Sanremo two years ago, had zero chips left after that encounter, while Joentausta went on to bag up 125,500.

Joentausta wouldn't finish the day as the chip leader though. That honor went to Cristiano Guerra from Italy. He flopped a set of eights and one fine gentleman wasn't willing to fold his pocket aces. The eights held up and the monster pot was pushed Guerra's way. He finished the night with 148,700.

Day 1b will start at noon on Tuesday. Players are able to enter up until the start of Day 2, but we'll soon enough have an idea on whether or not the tournament gets anywhere near comparable numbers to Season 9's stop.

Lot's of familiar faces are expected for Day 1b including Team PokerStars Pro's Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier, Liv Boeree, Vicky Coren, and Victor Ramdin. Of course they will be joined by lots of other seasoned pros, qualifiers and local grinders giving it a go.

PokerNews.com will again cover the event with updates from the first flop till the last river, the best photos, and of course video interviews with all of the biggest names. Speaking of which, check out this video on why you should visit Sanremo:

There will be no back-to-back victory for Oleksii Khoroshenin from the Ukraine after he has just hit the rail. Alessandro De Fenza Wins IPT Sanremo Main Event for €105,600

Nível 7 : 250/500, 50 ante
Alessandro De Fenza
Alessandro De Fenza

Prior to the EPT10 Sanremo Main Event, the Italian Poker Tour (IPT) kicked off their €700 buy-in Main Event, which attracted 1,124 players and created a prize pool of €763,196. That was distributed to the top 167 players, with over €100k reserved for the eventual winner. In the end, and thanks to a three-handed deal, it was Italy's Alessandro De Fenza that walked away with the trophy and a €105,600 first-place prize.

Among those who cashed were Tam Truong (166th - €1,220), Max Pescatori (160th - €1,220), Sergio Aido (158th - €1,220), Marcin Horecki (150th - €1,220), Alex Kravchenko (135th - €1,345), Casey Kastle (129th - €1,345), Vitaly Lunkin (107th - €1,500), Alessandro Basile (78th - €1,660), Andrea Dato (59th - €1,980), Kitty Kuo (34th - €2,800), Ben Yu (27th - €3,815), Pratik Ghatge (22nd - €4,550), and Franco Berlingieri (10th - €8,480).

UKIPT Marbella champion Ludovic Geilich, who won the Super Tuesday last week for a career best online cash of $101,325 and was fourth at EPT London, narrowly missed the final, finishing 11th for €8,480.

When the final nine, who were guaranteed at least €13,000, returned for the final day of play on Monday, Marcello Miniucchi was the chip leader; however, he faced some stiff competition including APPT Cebu champion Jae Kyung Sim, 2012 Swedish Champion Alexander Norden, World Poker Tour Venice runner-up Alex Longobardi, and Niccolo Ceccarelli, who had already won an event at the EPT Sanremo Poker Festival when he beat a 75-strong field to take down the €200 NL Turbo (Unlimited RB/AO) for €8,620. However, as you know, it was De Fenza who walked away the victor.

How Do You Like Them Tomatoes?

Nível 6 : 200/400, 50 ante
Pius Heinz
Pius Heinz

In back to back hands Pius Heinz just made a lot of new chips.

In the first hand he was seated in the big blind and he was involved in a three way pot. We saw Heinz check-call a 1,600 bet from the big blind on a {4-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{J-Hearts} flop. One other gentleman had folded so it was just Heinz and Russian player Valeriy Chupin to the turn.

Heinz check-called another 3,600 once the {7-Clubs} hit the turn and the former world champ checked again on the {8-Clubs} river. Chupin checked behind and mucked as Heinz showed {6-Hearts}{10-Hearts} for the missed flush but rivered straight.

The next hand Heinz was in the small blind and again involved in a three way pot with Chupin. Chupin wasn't the one going broke in the hand though, Jeff Rossiter was.

On a {3-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{6-Hearts} flop Heinz checked to Chupin. The Russian player made a 1,700 bet and Rossiter made the call in position. Heinz check raised to 5,800 and Chupin reluctantly folded. Rossiter wasn't intending on doing the same, he pushed all in for what appeared about 17,000. Heinz instantly called.

Heizn showed {4-Clubs}{4-Hearts} for the flopped set, Rossiter tabled {7-Spades}{7-Hearts} for the over-pair with the gutshot.

The {4-Spades} hit the turn, giving Heinz the unbeatable quads and sending Rossiter home. The {2-Diamonds} fell on the river just to make things official.

While Rossiter made his exit, Heinz was counting his chips. He has about 50,000 now, back in action!

Castelluccio Loses With Kings in Five-Bet Pot

Nível 6 : 200/400, 50 ante
Sergio Castelluccio
Sergio Castelluccio

Sergio Castelluccio was nowhere to be seen and his seat was taken by a new player. We asked former table mate Andrew Chen what had happened and he replied 'Oh yeah, I think that might be worth reporting on'.

Chen told us that Oleksii Khoroshenin had opened under the gun to 750. Someone a couple of positions down had made it 1,750 and Sergio Castelluccio had cold four-bet to 3,200. Daniel Smith from Monaco, not to be mistaken with Dan Smith who crushed Monaco's €5,000 events two years a go, cold five-bet from the blinds to 6,700.

Khoroshenin had folded, the three better had thought about it for some time, but eventually did the same. Chen told us that Castelluccio took his time before eventually calling.

The flop came {8-}{7-}{6-} with two hearts and Smith pushed all in. Castelluccio, who needed quite some time pre flop, now made the call instantly.

Castelluccio had kings but that hand was no good. Smith tabled aces and that hand held up. Castelluccio, who started out so well today, is gone from this tournament.

Duhamel Done and Dusted

Nível 6 : 200/400, 50 ante
Jonathan Duhamel
Jonathan Duhamel

It was a rough day for Team PokerStars Pro Jonathan Duhamel, and one that just came to an end shy of Level 6. We missed the hand as it happened, but a colleague was kind enough to fill us in on the details.

According to him, Duhamel checked a {5-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{10-Hearts} flop from the hijack and Zoltan Purak bet 1,200 from the cutoff. Duhamel responded by moving all in for 11,600, and Purak made the call.

Duhamel: {a-Spades}{10-Spades}
Purak: {a-Hearts}{4-Hearts}

Purak had flopped the nuts, and Duhamel was drawing to running cards. However, the {Q-Spades} turn took away any chance of that happening. The meaningless {3-Clubs} was run out on the river for good measure, and then a dejected Duhamel took his leave from the EPT10 Sanremo Main Event.

Monfort And Chartier Tangle Again

Nível 5 : 150/300, 25 ante
Samuel Chartier
Samuel Chartier

Ronan Monfort opened under the gun plus one with a min raise to 600. Sam Chartier, seated in the big blind, was the sole caller.

Chartier checked as the {J-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{3-Hearts} flop hit the table. Monfort made a 725 continuation bet and the French Canadian made the call. The {5-Hearts} fell on the turn and Chartier grabbed the initiative by leading out for 1,850. Monfort called and they were off to the river.

The {A-Hearts} made for a four flush on the board. Chartier bet out 4,300 and Monfort contemplated his move for the next twenty seconds. He eventually decided on raising and he made it 12,125 to go.

In most cases a river raise takes some time to process, but Chartier didn't need much this time around. He called almost instantaneous and tabled {A-Spades}{5-Spades}. Monfort was still smiling, but had to muck his {K-Hearts}{K-Diamonds} and let Chartier take down the pretty big pot.

An Orbit w/ 2011 World Series of Poker Champ Pius Heinz

Nível 3 : 100/200, 0 ante
Pius Heinz
Pius Heinz

Back in 2011, Pius Heinz topped a field of 6,865 players to win the World Series of Poker Main Event for $8,715,638. Since then Heinz has sort of dropped off the poker radar. That changed when he made an appearance at the EPT10 Vienna last month, and now he's back on the EPT here in Sanremo.

We don't get to watch Heinz in action much these days, so we took the opportunity to spend an entire orbit with him. Heinz, who is sporting a beard and grey cap, started the orbit with right around 35,000.

Hand #1 (Under the Gun): Heinz was first to act and folded his hand.

Hand #2 (Big Blind): Carsten Chylla opened for 500 under the gun and received a call from Carter Swidler. Italy's Vincenzo Scarpitti then came along, Heinz called from the big blind, and four players saw a flop of {7-Spades}{j-Spades}{3-Diamonds}.

Heinz was first to act and led out for 1,300, which inspired Chylla to fold. The other two players called, and the {7-Diamonds} appeared on the turn. Heinz bet again, this time 3,000, and Swidler quickly folded. Scarpitti then pushed back with a min-raise to 6,000, Heinz called, and it was heads-up action to the {9-Clubs} river.

Heinz slowed down with a check, and then wasted little time in folding to a bet of 7,000 from Scarpitti.

Hand #3 (Small Blind): A player in middle position opened for 425 and Heinz folded when action reached him.

Hand #4 (Button): The cutoff raised to 450 and Heinz folded.

Hand #5 (Cutoff): Action folded around to Heinz and he did the same. The big blind ended up getting a walk in the hand.

Hand #6 (Hijack): The under-the-gun player raised to 500 and Heinz ended up folding.

Hand #7 (Middle Position): Once again the under-the-gun player opened for 500 and Heinz ended up folding.

Hand #8 (Middle Position): A player in early position raised to 450 and Heinz folded.

Hand #9 (Early Position): The under-the-gun player folded and so did Heinz.

Aside from the second hand of the orbit, Heinz was in fold mode.

Meanwhile, both David Suarez and Patryk Poterek have both been eliminated from the tournament.
