Berglund Holds Massive Lead After Day 2 of EPT Sanremo Main Event

Nível 14 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante
Lukas Berglund
Lukas Berglund

The 2014 PokerStars.it European Poker Tour Sanremo continued today with Day 2 action from the Casino Sanremo on the Italian Riviera. There were 316 players still in contention for the title at the start of the day, and with no further players taking the option to buy in the prize pool was announced. A total number of 556 entrants generated a €2,480,872 prize pool with €476,100 going to the eventual winner and 79 players being paid.

After six levels of play, Lukas Berglund from Sweden leads the Day 2 field with 700,600. Berglund ran well all day including a hand where he called a four-bet preflop shove from Marcos Panque and his {10-Spades}{10-Hearts} held against {A-Clubs}{k-Spades} on a final board of {10-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{3-Spades}{2-Clubs}{4-Clubs}. Not long after that he busted Elesion Tusha who held {a-Diamonds}{k-Hearts} when he flopped a set with {j-Clubs}{j-Hearts} on a board that ran out {j-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{5-Spades}.

Berglund is followed by Thiago Crema De Macedo from Brazil in second place with 482,400 and Raul Mestre from Spain is in third with 473,300.

Liv Boeree’s quest for a second EPT title at the venue of her first triumph came to an end fairly early on when she got her short stack in with a big ace against [Removed:17]’s {a-}{9-}, but she was outdrawn here hopes of winning the title for a second time came to an end.

Birthday boy Sorel Mizzi managed to double up on the feature table, but he would later bust losing a flip to bust. He jokingly described it as the worst birthday ever.

The action sped up as the day went on and by the halfway point a third of the starting field had been eliminated with 199 still left fighting it out. Team PokerStars Pro Vicky Coren had a great day which included busting Kevin MacPhee when her {a-}{k-} won a flip against his {q-}{q-} to shoot her over 100,000. She won numerous pots throughout the day and ended with 162,400.

[Removed:17], who led at the start of the day after finishing Day 1b as chip leader, ended with 280,000 chips. However, the Day 1a chip leader, Cristiano Guerra, busted in one of the last hands of the day. He was left short and got it in with {k-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} but was called by Artem Romanov's {7-Clubs}{7-Spades} and the pair held.

The most startling hand of the day was surely on the feature table where, after a series of preflop raises, Gianluca Petrone from Italy six-bet jammed and got called by Canadian Shyam Srinivasan. They were both the big stacks at the table and whoever won would be the tournament chip leader. Srinivasan tabled {a-Diamonds}{a-Spades} and Petrone showed {5-Clubs}{4-Clubs}. The cards ran out {4-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}. Srinivasan shot into the lead and ended the day with close to 300k.

Victor Ramdin had a very swingy day, starting short before running his stack right up the leader board, though losing a flip he faded away towards the end of the day finishing on 56,600.

PokerStars Team Pro Johnny Lodden was another one who had an up-and-down day. He started well but then in Level 13 he lost a big pot when his {6-Diamonds}{6-Spades} lost a race against {a-Clubs}{q-Diamonds} only to more than double up shortly after when he got it in with {k-Diamonds}{q-Spades} on a flop of {3-Hearts}{k-Clubs}{j-Clubs} against the draw of Tommaso Briotti who had {a-Clubs}{10-Clubs}. The turn {j-Diamonds} and river {7-Spades} bricked out and Lodden’s top pair held. He returns tomorrow with 185,000.

Other notables to look out for tomorrow include Olivier Busquet (387,900), Michael Tureniec (212,100), Mathew Frankland (165,800) and PokerStars Team Online's Mickey Petersen (164,700)

The final tally of Day 2 survivors was 115 players, all of whom will return when play resumes here at Noon local time tomorrow. That is when the tense money bubble will burst sending a further 36 players home empty handed.

Three-Way All In

Nível 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Tamer Kamel
Tamer Kamel

We aren't exactly sure what happened pre flop, but three players got their stacks in before a single community card was dealt.

Tamer Kamel: {K-Spades}{K-Clubs}
Dzmitry Urbanovich: {10-Hearts}{10-Clubs}
Iliodoros Kamatakis: {A-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}

Kamel and Urbanovich were both at risk as Kamatakis had them covered. Urbanovich was the shortest of the bunch with about 33,000 in chips. Kamel had 30,000 more than that, Kamatakis had plenty to spare.

The {A-Hearts}{10-Spades}{7-Diamonds} flop spelled doom for Kamel as both his opponents out flopped him. The {6-Spades} on the turn and {Q-Diamonds} on the river couldn't save him and he exited the tournament.

Meanwhile Urbanovich tripled and Kamatakis broke about even.

Does the size of the watch indicate the type of opponent you are? Is an enormous, gold-plated sparkly thing, perhaps worth tens of thousands of dollars, still the most vivid warning that the wearer can play a bit? The PokerStars Blog reports here.

Berglund Eliminates Jacobson

Nível 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Lukas Berglund
Lukas Berglund

Lukas Berglund was just seen with a giant tower of blue 5,000 chips in front of him. When we studied the situation it turned out he wasn't really betting over 150,000, he was rather putting Martin Jacobson all in.

The board read {K-Spades}{3-Hearts}{J-Hearts}{3-Spades} at the time and the decision was on Jacobson. Jacobson had still quite some chips left, but had to risk 'em all if he wanted to find out if Berglund had what he was representing he had. Berglund later told us that he had raised it up pre flop and received multiple callers. After continuation betting the flop, just Jacobson sticked around. Berglund was now firing the second bullet against his countryman, a big one at that.

Jacobson ultimately reluctantly called. He left his shoulder hanging as soon as Berglund tabled his {A-Spades}{K-Clubs} for top pair and top kicker. Jacobson had {K-Hearts}{Q-Hearts} himself and needed a queen or trey to stay alive. The {10-Spades} wasn't the card Jacobson was looking for, and the two time EPT Main Event runner-up headed to the exit.

Huge Pot Sends Berglund Into The Lead

Nível 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante

Juri Mereu raised to 2,500 and Luca Moschitta called. Lukas Berglund reraised to 8,500 and Mereu, who was still on tilt after losing a big pot shortly before, announced all in. Moschitta did so as well for ~110,000 and Berglund snap-called!

Mereu: {Q-Clubs}{Q-Spades}
Moschitta: {K-Spades}{K-Hearts}
Berglund: {A-Spades}{A-Clubs}

It was a massive setup in favor of the Swede and he held up on the {7-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{4-Spades} board. The stacks were counted and Berglund had 120,600, enough to cover both opponents.

Troyanovskiy Loses With Aces To Kings

Nível 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Vladimir Troyanovskiy
Vladimir Troyanovskiy

Vladimir Troyanovskiy, who finished runner-up to Vanessa Selbst in last years $25,000 High Roller at the PCA for $792,180, has just been eliminated from the tournament. Troyanovskiy has never seen the river, and has never witnessed that his stack was just nearly covered by his opponent.

In a button versus big blind situation Troyanovskiy and Mitch Johnson got all of their chips in before the flop. Johnson, who was on the button, held {K-Hearts}{K-Diamonds} and was up against Troyanovskiy's {A-Diamonds}{A-Hearts}.

The flop came {K-Clubs}{5-Spades}{9-Hearts}. By the time the dealer had the {9-Spades} on the table Troyanovskiy had already left the tournament area. He never saw the {Q-Clubs}.

The dealer started counting the chips and came to the conclusion that Johnson had slightly more chips than Troyanovskiy. The Russian player is out, the Brit is now one of the bigger stacks in the room.

"That's Why He's a World Champion"

Nível 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Pius Heinz
Pius Heinz

It's not often we get to see a world-class call, but we just did by a literal world-class player. We're talking about 2011 World Series of Poker champ Pius Heinz.

The hand began when he opened for 2,000 from the hijack only to have Sergey Rybachenko three-bet to 5,600 from the button. The blinds folded, Heinz made the call, and it was heads-up action to the {10-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{k-Clubs} flop.

Heinz checked, Rybachenko bet 4,500, and Heinz woke up with a check-raise to 11,000. Rybachenko made the call and then fired out 12,500 when his German opponent checked the {10-Clubs} turn. Heinz called it, and then promptly checked the {6-Diamonds} river. Rybachenko stacked his remaining 30,000 chips and slowly slid them forward.

"How much?" Heinz asked. The champ then contemplated the decision for around 90 seconds. A call would cost about two-thirds of his remaining chips, and he decided to go with it.

"Nice call," Rybachenko said and showed the {4-Spades}{7-Spades} for a bluff. Heinz then tabled the {a-Clubs}{q-Spades} for just ace high. His read was right, and he was rewarded with a monster pot.

"That's why he's a world champ," Team Online's Mickey Petersen commented after the hand.

Meanwhile, Artem Litvinov and Tommaso Bonini have also been eliminated from the tournament.
