EPT10 Barcelona Attracts 1,234 Runners; Piqué Among Those That Fell on Day 2

Gerard Piqué up and out of his chair, eliminated on Day 2 of EPT Barcelona

The European Poker Tour Barcelona continued on Tuesday as the surviving 697 players from the two starting flights combined under one roof for Day 2 action. Joining them were a few latecomers, who had the option of registering right up to the start of play. After six 75-minute levels of play, 235 players remained with Pablo Alexander Tavitian, who won the 2013 PokerStars Latin American Poker Tour Chile National Poker Championship Main Event earlier this year, and his stack of 465,000 leading the way.

After registration closed, the numbers were tallied and a staggering 1,234 players – the largest in EPT Barcelona history (second largest on European soil) – had turned out for the first stop of Season 10. That created a prize pool of €5,984,900 to be distributed to the top 183 players with €1,067,000 reserved for the eventual winner.

One of the most talked about stories on Day 2 was that of famed footballer Gerard Piqué, who began with 23,100 and began to run it up. Unfortunately, Piqué was stopped in his tracks in Level 10 (500/1,000/100) by PokerStars qualifier Carlos Mora Alvarez. The duo had taken a flop of {6-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{8-Spades}, and it appeared as if there were some big bets before Piqué got the last of his chips in on the {9-Clubs} turn.

The {K-Spades} ended up completing the board on the river and Piqué turned over the {5-Spades}{6-Spades}, revealing that he got the majority of his chips in on middle pair and a gutshot straight draw. Alvarez then tabled the {q-Clubs}{8-Clubs}, showing he was willing to get chips in with top pair and a flush draw. Alvarez hit the flush on the turn to seal the deal, and Piqué wished the table luck before taking his leave.

Others who hit the rail throughout the day were Marc-Andre Ladouceur, Kai Herold, Dan Smith, Ignat “0Human0” Liviu, Mark Newhouse, Stephen Chidwick, James Dempsey, Daniel Alaei, Scott Seiver, Jens Kyllonen, Fabian Quoss, Jonathan Little and Vitaly Lunkin.

A couple of days ago, Lunkin topped a field of 51 entries in the EPT10 Barcelona €50,000 Super High Roller to win €771,300. Lunkin was well on his way to a cash here in the Main Event, but an unsuccessful bluff in Level 13 (1,000/2,000/300) greatly diminished his chances.

It happened when Bulgaria's Aleksandar Denishev raised from the cutoff only to have Lunkin three-bet to 10,200 from the button. The blinds folded, Denishev four-bet to 22,000 and Lunkin ended up making the call. When the flop fell {k-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{4-Clubs}, Denishev fired out 14,100 and Lunkin made a relatively quick call. After the dealer burned and turned the {K-Clubs}, Denishev slid out a bet of 31,000 and Lunkin snap-shoved for roughly 125,000.

Denishev, clearly distraught, shot back his chair and put his hands on his head. He then removed his sunglasses and stared down Lunkin for well over three minutes before calling off for 117,300 total. Lunkin sheepishly turned over the {a-Hearts}{j-Clubs} for a bluff, and he seemed none too pleased when Denishev tabled the {k-Spades}{10-Clubs}. Lunkin, who speaks limited English, expressed his displeasure and asked what took Denishev so long to call. Whether or not it was a slow roll was a moot point as Denishev was shipped the double after the meaningless {7-Diamonds} completed the board on the river. Lunkin was eliminated a short time later.

Likewise, Team PokerStars Pros were reduced as Jason Mercier, Eugene Katchalov, Fatima Moreira De Melo, Jonathan Duhamel, Liv Boeree, Jake Cody, Rino Mathis, Maxim Lykov, Marcel Luske, Vanessa Selbst, Jan Heitmann, Luca Pagano, Nacho Barbero and Theo Jorgensen all fell on Day 2.

Even so, some still remain including Victor Ramdin (156,600) and Angel Guillen (62,500), just to name a couple. Other notables who will return on Day 3 are defending champ Mikalai Pobal (71,200), Marvin Rettenmaier (90,800), Erik Freiberg (114,500), Byron Kaverman (122,600), Shannon Shorr (123,100), Grayson Ramage (158,700), Kitty Kuo (177,000), Andrew Moreno (202,300), Yann Dion (293,000) and Niall Farrell (444,000).

Day 3 will kick off on Wednesday at 12 p.m. CET at the Casino Barcelona. Be sure to stay tuned to PokerNews' live coverage as we bring you all the action and eliminations from the tournament floor.

In the two years prior to his win, Sweden’s Kent Lundmark, born May 19, 1988, had several five-figure scores including 29th in the 2010 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Main Event for $66,000 and second in the 2010 Nordic Masters of Poker SKr 25,000 No Limit Hold’em Main Event for $69,911. Then, in November 2010, Lundmark broke through by winning the EPT Barcelona for $1,127,604.

He did so by outlasting 757 other players including a final table that housed Francesco Notaro (8th - €70,000), Thor Stang (6th - €130,000), Konstantin Puchkov (3rd - €300,000) and Jesus Cortes Lizano (2nd - €525,000). The heads-up match with Lizano began with Lundmark holding a slight chip lead, and he never looked back. Twenty minutes after winning a big pot where Lizano missed a flush, Lundmark finished the job. He opened with a bet of 320,000 and then moved all in when his Spanish opponent three-bet to 880,000. Lizano called off with the {k-Spades}{j-Diamonds} and was behind the {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts} of Lundmark. The board ran out {9-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{7-Spades}{5-Spades}{a-Spades} and Lundmark became an EPT champion.

Lundmark, who began playing poker straight out of high school, has been keeping busy traveling the European circuit and has amassed $219,989, $186,249 and $132,843 in tournament winnings in the three years since his win. Among his most notable accomplishments are a runner-up finish in the 2012 Unibet Open Paris Main Event for $129,287, first in a Full Tilt Poker UKIPT Galway €1,000 NLHE side event for $72,307 and second in the 2011 EPT Sanremo €2,000 NLHE Bounty for $42,051.

Rettenmaier Flops Two Pair

Marvin Rettenmaier
Marvin Rettenmaier

Marvin Rettenmaier raised his button to an unknown amount and found a three-bet from Grudi Hristov Grudev in the small blind. Rettenmaier called and we're unsure of the amounts, but each player committed at least 12,000 before the flop.

The flop came down {6-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{2-Diamonds} and Grudev checked. Rettenmaier fired 11,600 and Grudev tanked for about one minute before flat calling. The {4-Spades} hit the turn and Grudev thought very deliberately once more. He checked again.

Rettenmaier once again cut into his stack and on this street fired 21,800. Grudev called.

The river was the {10-Diamonds} and Grudev checked for a third time. Rettenmaier thought for over two minutes before finally deciding to knuckle the table back. Grudev showed {K-Spades}{6-Spades} for a pair of sixes but was ultimately behind Rettenmaier's {6-Hearts}{2-Hearts} for a flopped two pair. Rettenmaier scooped the pot and now sits at roughly 150,000.

Who Will Be the Skrill Last Player Standing?

Nível 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Skrill Stall at EPT Barcelona
Skrill Stall at EPT Barcelona

Season 10 of the European Poker Tour kicked off this past weekend in Barcelona, Spain. The festival’s €5,300 Main Event is underway, which you can follow in our live blog, and one name that keeps popping up during the tournament is Skrill – which isn’t a player, but rather an online payment solutions company that aims to evolve “the way people pay and get paid globally.”

The company’s website provides a bit more information on Skrill, which rebranded from Moneybookers back in 2010:

“Skrill has been moving money digitally since 2001. We offer online payment solutions for businesses and consumers, allowing them to pay and get paid globally. Over 36 million account holders already trust Skrill. Our customers can send and receive money worldwide in 200 countries and 40 currencies, securely and at low cost, without revealing their personal financial details. Your business will benefit from our worldwide payment network with over 100 payment options. Whether through a simple one-step integration or a fully-tailored payment solution. Whoever you are, however you like to pay or get paid, trust Skrill to make your online payments simpler, faster and safer.”

Headquartered in London, Skrill is looking to make their presence known in the poker world with a commitment to customer satisfaction through innovation and service. Not only that, they’re looking to be more than just a company by becoming a trusted and respected member of the poker community.

One way they’re fostering this is through the Skrill Last Longer competition, which will be held at each stop on this season’s EPT, of which they’re an official sponsor. The promotion is simple – players sign up for the promotion either online (preregistration is available) or at the Skrill booth (which will be present at each stop); don a Skrill patch; and then aim to be the last man or woman standing. The last player remaining will then receive the €5,300 buy-in back in their Skrill account.

For the EPT Barcelona Main Event, more than 200 players signed up for the promotion, and of those 106 made it through to Day 2. Some notable players who are a part of the competition include Dominik Nitsche, Konstantin Puchkov and Carlos Mora Alvarez, the man who eliminated famed footballer Gerard Piqué.

While Skrill is upping the ante for Season 10 with a bigger branding initiative, this isn’t their first appearance on the EPT; as a matter of fact, they were a sponsor of Season 8 and have held previous “Last Longer” promotions (the most successful being in EPT Copenhagen when one of their players took second).

The PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be keeping an eye on the latest incarnation of the Skrill Last Longer throughout the duration of the EPT Barcelona Main Event.

Gerard Piqué up and out of his chair, eliminated on Day 2 of EPT Barcelona

One of the most talked about stories here at the EPT Barcelona was the appearance of famed footballer Gerard Piqué, who was one of the headliners entering Day 2. Unfortunately, Piqué won't be adding a poker title to his long list of accomplishments.

It happened when Piqué and PokerStars qualifier Carlos Mora Alvarez saw a flop of {6-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{8-Spades}. We didn't get the exact action, but it appeared as if there were some big bets and then Piqué got the last of his chips in on the {9-Clubs} turn. The {K-Spades} ended up completing the board on the river, which is about when the TV cameras began filming the action.

Piqué turned over the {5-Spades}{6-Spades}, revealing that he got the majority of his chips in on middle pair and a gutshot straight draw. Alvarez then tabled the {q-Clubs}{8-Clubs}, showing he was willing to get chips in with top pair and a flush draw. Alvarez hit the flush on the turn to seal the deal, and after the river was run out, Piqué wished the table luck and then took his leave as the cameras captured his long walk to the exit.

Cody Doubles Through Brito

Jake Cody (Day 1b) Doubles Up
Jake Cody (Day 1b) Doubles Up

Joao Brito opened with a middle position raise to 1,600 and received one call from Jake Cody out of the big blind. The two saw a flop of {9-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} and Cody checked. Brito continued out for 1,800 only to have Cody come over the top with a check-raise to 5,400.

Brito reached into his stack and grabbed enough chips to call the raise. Fourth street brought the {8-Spades} and Cody riffled through his chips and stacked them into even stacks before announcing that he was all in. Suddenly Brito was faced with the all-in bet of 20,600 and he took his time before coming to a decision. Eventually, a call was made and the hands were turned up.

Cody: {K-Spades}{Q-Spades}
Brito: {K-Clubs}{9-Clubs}

Both players flopped a pair but Cody's was larger and he was looking likely to double up heading to the river. He did exactly that after the {6-Hearts} hit the table and Cody's stack is now sitting around 58,000. Brito, who began the day over 100,000, is now down to around 86,000.

Action at Table 55: Moreno Thrives, Moreira De Melo Eliminated

Nível 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Fatima de Melo - Eliminated
Fatima de Melo - Eliminated

We arrived at Table 55 to catch two hands that were filled with action. In the first, we found Jack Salter raise from the hijack and Andrew Moreno call from the cutoff. Saar Wilf called as well from the big blind and the trio took in a flop.

The dealer fanned {5-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{3-Clubs} on the felt and Wilf checked. Salter tossed out a continuation of 4,100 and Moreno waited a moment before bumping the action up to 10,100. Wilf let it go and Salter flat called. The two saw the {10-Diamonds} fall on fourth street where they both checked their options. The {J-Diamonds} finished off the board and Salter checked again. Moreno fired one last bet of 13,000 and Salter let it go, allowing Moreno to drag in the pot and bring his stack to around 95,000.

The very next hand, Salter was able to win some of his money back when he called the preflop all in of PokerStars Team SportStar member Fatima Moreira De Melo. De Melo held {K-Clubs}{Q-Clubs} and was racing with Salter's {7-Hearts}{7-Clubs}. A runout of {10-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{J-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{3-Spades} ensured that de Melo would be sent to the rail. Salter picked up the pot and brought his stack to around 90,000.

Petersen Sends Mercier Overboard

Jason Mercier (Day 1a)
Jason Mercier (Day 1a)

Earlier this morning, Team PokerStars Pro Jason Mercier arranged a boat ride for fellow Team Pros Live Boeree, Daniel Negreanu, and Jonathan Duhamel, along with a few other friends. Mercier made it back to play today on time, but he only had 18,000 in chips. That amount was relegated to zero thanks to PokerStars Team Online member Mickey Petersen, meaning Mercier will have a bit more time for boat rides the rest of the week.

On his elimination hand, action folded to Sergii Baranov, the man who finished runner-up to Phil Hellmuth in the 2012 World Series of Poker Europe Main Event, and he raised to 2,100. Mercier was in the next seat and moved all in. Right behind Mercier was Petersen, and he reshoved over the top. Every folded back to Baranov, and he also folded, leaving Mercier at risk with the {A-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds} against Petersen's {Q-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}.

The flop, turn, and river couldn't produce any help for Mercier as the board ran out {10-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{6-Hearts}, and he was eliminated. Petersen climbed to about 60,000 in chips.

Where Are They Now: Season 5 EPT Barcelona Champ Sebastian Ruthenberg

Nível 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Season 5 EPT Barcelona champ Sebastian Ruthenberg
Season 5 EPT Barcelona champ Sebastian Ruthenberg

Despite turning professional in 2006, it wasn’t until the 2008 WSOP that a young German by the name of Sebastian Ruthenberg made a name for himself by winning Event #33 $5,000 World Championship Seven Card Stud Hi-Low Split-8 or Better for $328,756 and his first gold bracelet (making him the fifth German ever to win a gold bracelet).

Three months later, Ruthenberg topped a field of 619 players – including a stacked final table containing Sam Chartier (7th - $253,908), Jason Mercier (6th - $324,946), Davidi Kitai (3rd - $455,000) and Fintan Gavin (2nd - €792,000) – to in the EPT Barcelona for $1,941,401.

Ruthenberg took a 5-1 chip lead into heads-up play and it took just three hands for him to capture the title. In the final hand, Gavin moved all in preflop with the {4-Hearts}{7-Clubs} and Ruthenberg called with the {k-Clubs}{9-Clubs}. The board ran out {a-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{k-Hearts}{9-Diamonds} and Ruthenberg’s two pair emerged victorious.

Ruthenberg, who was born February 6, 1984 and studied IT at university, has $3,457,186 in career tournament earning, with nearly $2.4 million of that coming in 2008. Prior to that he won $100,836 and $441,672 in 2006 and 2007 respectively, and after two slow years from 2009-2010 where he earned a combined $81,650, he stormed back in 2011 and won $442,238, which included a 55th-place finish in the WSOP Main Event for $130,997 and runner-up in the EPT Berlin €10,000 No Limit Hold’em 8 Max for $163,668.

Ruthenberg’s success earned him a coveted spot as a Team PokerStars Pro and he continues to represent the site at stops around the world as well as on the virtual felt. Without a doubt, Ruthenberg is among the most accomplished and relevant of the former EPT Barcelona winner.
