Gerard Piqué Headlines Those Entering Day 2; Ole Schemion Leads

Gerard Piqué
Gerard Piqué

Welcome back for Day 2 of the €10,000 High Roller from the kickoff festival for Season 10 of the PokerStars.com European Poker Tour. Day 1 attracted a large group of deep-pocketed pros and amateurs alike, but one player in particular who was able to build a big stack transcends any type of stardom reached by any poker player in the field — superstar footballer Gerard Piqué.

The central defender for the Spanish National Team and FC Barcelona earned himself a red card and a suspension in the Confederations Cup final against Brazil back in June. Today, when the Spanish National Team takes on Finland in a World Cup qualifier, Piqué is unable to play. Unable to suit up for his team in what figures to be a victory for Spain, Piqué has opted to show off his skills on a different kind of green surface — the poker felt.

Piqué played the EPT Barcelona Main Event, but busted on Day 2 before the money was reached. Back in July, Piqué played in the World Series of Poker Main Event, but also fell short of the money there. So far in the High Roller, Piqué has done very well. He ran his starting stack of 50,000 in chips up to 308,500, which should be good enough for a top 10 stack moving into Day 2.

One of the few men topping Piqué on the leader board was chip leader Ole Schemion. THe young German phenom amassed a stack of 393,600 in chips, storming into the chip lead in the latter half of the final level of Day 1. It was then that he busted two players on the same hand, Vitaly Lunkin and Vincent Verdickt, to take the number one spot.

Other notables with big stacks were Igor Kurganov (315,300), Sam Greenwood (313,800), Richard Yong (312,200), Eugene Katchalov (260,400), and 2013 World Series of Poker November Niner David Benefield (220,400).

Like Schemion, Benefield has already made the final table of the €50,000 Super High Roller and cashed in the Main Event here in Barcelona at this stop. Both have the opportunity for the trifecta of great results from EPT Barcelona, and they've done well to position themselves thus far.

Day 2 is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. local time. The registration and re-entry period will remain open until 11:45 a.m. this morning, then the final numbers will be tallied and released. As of the end of the night last night, around 170 entries were created.

Piqué Eliminates Lakemeier, Takes Chip Lead

Gerard Piqué (Day 1)

Gerard Piqué raised from early position and found a call from Jens Lakemeier in the cutoff. The rest of the table folded and the two were heads up to the flop.

The dealer spread {4-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{10-Hearts} on the felt and Piqué checked. Lakemeier fired out a bet of an unknown amount and Piqué called to see fourth street.

The turn was the {8-Clubs} and Piqué checked. Lakemeier continued his aggression with a bet of 18,500.

"How much do you have left?" Piqué asked, eyeing up Lakemeier's stack of about 45,000. "Okay, I'm all in."

Lakemeier counted his stack a few times and decided to make the call.

Lakemeier: {A-Clubs}{2-Clubs}
Piqué: {Q-Clubs}{9-Clubs}

Both players picked up club draws on the turn and Lakemeier was shocked to find that he was ahead going to the river. That all changed in the blink of an eye, however, as the {9-Diamonds} drilled the river and paired Piqué. Lakemeier was eliminated and Piqué dragged in a pot that boosts him into the chip lead.

Berende Doubles Through Piqué

Nível 11 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Gerard Piqué (Day 1)
Gerard Piqué (Day 1)

From early position, Gerard Piqué raised to 5,500. Paul Berende flat-called on the button, then Kristijonas Andrulis came along with a call from the big blind. On the {Q-Spades}{10-Spades}{7-Diamonds} flop, fireworks flew between Piqué and Berende.

First, Andrulis checked, then Piqué tossed out a bet of 9,500. Berende raised all in for 54,500, and Andrulis quickly folded. Piqué made the call holding the {A-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts} for top pair, top kicker. Berende had better, though, with the {K-Diamonds}{K-Clubs} after slyly just calling in position with the two kings preflop.

The turn was the {6-Diamonds}, leaving Piqué needing an ace or a queen on the river to win the hand and bust Berende. The {6-Hearts} paired the board, and that was a big brick as far as Berende was concerned. Piqué's losing hand was mucked, and Berende scooped the pot with two pair, kings and sixes, to double up.

Seiver Doubles Through Lewis

Scott Seiver Doubles

The player on the button opened to 6,500 and Toby Lewis cut out a three-bet to 18,200 from the small blind.

"I'm all in," said Scott Seiver from the big blind, moving most of his chips forward.

The button thought for a moment before mucking and Lewis snapped him off for about 58,000. Lewis showed {3-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} and was racing with Seiver's {A-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}.

The board ran out {A-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{10-Hearts} and Seiver's two pair were more than enough to secure him a double to around 130,000. Lewis, on the other hand, has dropped to 77,000.

Chartier Busts Andrulis to Seize Chip Lead

Nível 12 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Samuel Chartier
Samuel Chartier

Action began when Dan Smith made a raise to 5,000 from the button. Kristijonas Andrulis cut out a three-bet to 13,300 from the small blind and Sam Chartier thought for a bit in the big blind. He eventually moved out a four-bet to 32,400 which caused Smith to muck his cards.

Andrulis announced an all in bet for right around 100,000 total and Chartier snapped him off. Andrulis showed {A-Hearts}{Q-Hearts} but was in dire need of improvement to beat Chartier's {Q-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}. The flop was no help for Andrulis as it came {J-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{6-Spades} and the {8-Spades} turn left him hunting for an ace on the river. Alas, the final card was the {2-Diamonds} and Andrulis was sent packing.

Chartier dragged in the pot and is now the biggest stack in the room with around 475,000.

EPT Barcelona €10,000 High Roller Breaks Record

Nível 13 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante

The €10,000 High Roller here at the kickoff festival for Season 10 on the PokerStars.com European Poker Tour has set the record for a high roller event of the same buy-in on the EPT. Last season, the EPT record for a €10,000 High Roller event was broken four separate times: Barcelona, Prague, London, and Berlin. Coming into the start of this event, the EPT Berlin High Roller had the record with 140 entries, but that has since been smashed with the performance of this event in Barcelona.

The EPT Barcelona €10,000 High Roller attracted 138 unique players, and those players generated 42 re-entries for a total field size of 180 entries. That is a 28.6% increase over the record previously set, and an absolutely great showing.

Once the prize pool and payout information is released, PokerNews will promptly post it for your viewing pleasure.

Wydrowski Scores Double Knockout

Marcin Wydrowski Eliminates Two Players
Marcin Wydrowski Eliminates Two Players

PokerStars Team Online member Mickey Petersen opened with an all in bet for his last 24,000. Marcin Wydrowski quickly called the raise from the next seat over and action folded around to Andrew Chen in the blinds who moved all in over the top for 145,000. Wydrowski snapped him off and all three hands were turned up.

Wydrowski: {K-Hearts}{k-Spades}
Petersen: {J-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}
Chen: {A-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}

The door card gave Chen a breath of excitement as it was the {A-Clubs} and gave him top pair. Unfortunately for the Canadian, the rest of the flop brought the {K-Clubs} and the {7-Diamonds}, giving Wydrowski three kings and an overwhelming lead. Neither the turn ({3-Clubs}) or the river ({10-Hearts}) helped either Chen or Petersen and they both were eliminated from play. Wydrowski dragged in the pot and now sits on about 440,000.

Igor Kurganov was all in with the {A-Clubs}{J-Hearts} for 187,000. He was up against and behind David Benefield holding the {K-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}. The flop, turn, and river ran out {8-Spades}{5-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{9-Spades}, and Kurganov was eliminated.

With his elimination, all of the players are now in the money, including Gerard Piqué who gave a big fist pump upon cashing and was first congratulated by golfer Sergio Garcia. Benefield along with Ole Schemion are also in the money, having already made the final table and cashing in the €50,000 Super High Roller together, then both running deep into the money in the Main Event here in Barcelona.

Gerard Piqué raised to 12,000 from early position and Jonathan Duhamel flat called from the next seat over. Action folded to Benny Spindler who three-bet shipped all in for 106,000 total and it folded back to Piqué who mucked his cards as well. Duhamel instantly called and the hands were tabled.

Spindler: {A-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}
Duhamel: {Q-Spades}{Q-Clubs}

The board dropped down {2-Hearts}{5-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{10-Clubs} and Spindler was sent to the rail. The 2010 WSOP Main Event champion dragged in the pot and is now flirting with 700,000 in chips.

Marcin Wydrowski raised to 20,000 and Gerard Piqué three-bet all in over the top from the button for what looked to be about 80,000. Jonathan Duhamel re-raised from the small blind and Wydrowski folded.

Duhamel showed {A-Spades}{K-Clubs} and Piqué flung {K-Spades}{9-Diamonds} onto the felt. Both players paired their shared card on the {Q-Spades}{K-Diamonds}{2-Clubs} flop and the {2-Spades} on fourth street gave them each two pair. Piqué did not improve from the {7-Diamonds} river and he was eliminated from play in 19th place. He'll take home €21,150 for his deep run in this tournament.
