Finger Leads a Stacked EPT10 London £50,000 Super High Roller Final Table

Nível 18 : 25,000/50,000, 5,000 ante
Martin Finger

Season 10 of the European Poker Tour continued on Saturday with Day 2 action from the £50,000 Super High Roller. After nearly ten levels of play, the field was whittled down to the final table of eight with EPT8 Prague champ and World Series of Poker bracelet winner Martin Finger and his chip stack of 4.74 million leading the way.

Day 1 had attracted 38 unique players that accounted for 14 re-entries, but registration and re-entries were open until the start of play on Saturday. Viktor “Isildur1” Blom, Patrik Antonius and Dhruvin Patel were among the players to fire their first bullet on Day 2, while Erik Seidel and Philipp Gruissem, who had fired three bullets on Day 1, both re-entered (which meant the young German had £200,000 invested in the tournament).

The day kicked off with a bevy of eliminations including those of Igor Kurganov, Patel, Joni Jouhkimainen, Jason Mercier, Max Altergott, Jonathan Duhamel, Dan Smith, Richard Yong, and Gruissem.

Gruissem hit the rail (for the fourth time) in Level 10 with the blinds at 4,000/8,000/1,000. It happened after he opened for a raise with {a-}{k-} only to have Antonius, who held the same hand, three-bet to 42,000. Talal Shakerchi proceeded to four-bet to 76,000, Gruissem shoved for right around 230,000, and Antonius moved all in over the top. Shakerchi called off for roughly 330,000 and tabled {a-}{a-}, which held to win the monster pot. Shakerchi nearly tripled while simultaneously eliminating Gruissem and crippling Antonius.

Seidel was the next to go after suffering a bad beat at the hands of Johannes Strassmann, and he was followed out the door by Rick Salomon, Fabian Quoss, Mike Watson, Shawn Buchanan, Sam Trickett, Shakerchi and Haralabos Voulgaris.

Voulgaris fell in a monster hand in Level 12 with the blinds at 6,000/12,000/2,000. It began when Finger opened for 25,000 from the cutoff and Voulgaris three-bet all in for 209,000 from the button. The small blind folded and then Jeff Gross, who had both players covered, asked for exact counts on both stacks before moving all in over the top. Finger snap-called off for 668,000.

Voulgaris: {j-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}
Finger: {a-Hearts}{a-Clubs}
Gross: {q-Hearts}{q-Spades}

"What am I supposed to do there?" Gross asked of no one in particular before letting out a few expletives. Indeed, it was a big cooler, and there would be no surprises as Finger left both his opponents drawing dead on the turn after the board ran out {4-Spades}{7-Clubs}{k-Spades}{a-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}. Voulgaris was eliminated on the hand, and Gross would join him on the rail a short time later.

Others who failed to survive the day were Dan Shak, Andrew Chen, John Juanda, Sorel Mizzi, Viktor Blom, Daniel Negreanu, Steven Silverman, Paul Newey, Steve O'Dwyer and Ole Schemion.

In Level 17 (20,000/40,000/5,000), Christoph Vogelsang on the button and he raised to 90,000 and Schemion thought for about 40 seconds before moving all in for 925,000. Vogelsang leaned back in his chair and hit the tank for a brief spell.

"Call," Vogelsang eventually whispered. Schemion confidently tabled the {j-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}, and he was well out in front of Vogelsang's {a-Spades}{10-Clubs}. In fact, according to the PokerNews Odds Calculator, Schemion had a 71.11% chance of surviving the hand while Vogelsang would come from behind just 28.59%.

Much to Schemion's dismay, this was one of those times as the {3-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} flop paired Vogelsang's ace. A clearly frustrated Schemion slapped the table to say, "Good game." The dealer {6-Diamonds} appeared on the turn, and after the {7-Spades} completed the board on the river, Schemion made a beeline out the door. A little while later, Mike “Timex” McDonald finished as the bubble boy after he failed to win a race against Strassmann.

The third and final day will kick off at 1 p.m. UK time and will pick up with 34 minutes remaining in Level 18 (25,000/50,000/5,000). Since there is a one-hour delay on the live stream, our live updates won’t begin until 2 p.m. Be sure to check back then as we will bring you all the hands, chip counts, and photos on the way to crowing a winner.

Vogelsang Finds an Ace to Eliminate Schemion

Nível 17 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante
Ole Schemion
Ole Schemion

Just three hands after Christoph Vogelsang took a big pot off Ole Schemion, the two Germans collided once again.

It began when action folded to Vogelsang on the button and he raised to 90,000. Patrik Antonius folded the small blind, and Schemion thought for about 40 seconds before moving all in for 925,000.

A clearly frustrated Schemion slapped the table to say, "Good game," and began to get out of his seat. The dealer burned and turned the {6-Diamonds}, which prompted Schemion to begin removing his microphone. When the {7-Spades} completed the board on the river, he handed the sound equipment to the TV crew and made a beeline out the door.

Schemion's elimination leaves just nine players, which means they'll combine to one table. We'll have that draw and updated counts for you in a few minutes.

O'Dwyer Eliminated After a Nearly 7-Minute Tank

Nível 15 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante
Steve O'Dwyer
Steve O'Dwyer

We haven't had too many hands from the final table, and part of the reason is because they're taking a long time to play out. Take for instance the last hand where Steve O'Dwyer tanked for six minutes and fifty-three seconds.

The hand began with David Benefield raising to 50,000 and receiving calls from Martin Finger and Steve O'Dwyer. The {k-Spades}{a-Hearts}{8-Clubs} flop saw O'Dwyer check from the big blind, Benefield continuation-bet and Finger fold. After the dealer burned and turned the {4-Spades}, O'Dwyer checked for a second time and Benefield bet 220,000. Again O'Dwyer called and then checked the {9-Spades} river.

"All in," Benefield said.

"Wow," O'Dwyer responded. "This is going to take a while."

O'Dwyer had 458,000 remaining, and he was the shorter stack. The minutes ticked by and it wasn't until nearly seven minutes had passed that O'Dwyer called off. Benefield confidently tabled the {8-Spades}{8-Diamonds} for a set, and O'Dwyer shook his head up and down as if to say, "I'm not surprised."

O'Dwyer then tabled the {a-Clubs}{9-Hearts}, grabbed his bag, and exited the stage in 11th place.

Schemion Cracks Aces to Eliminate Newey

Nível 15 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante
Paul Newey
Paul Newey

Earlier today Erik Seidel suffered a bad beat when his aces were cracked in an all-in preflop situation. Paul Newey has just suffered the same fate. It happened when action folded to Newey on the button and he shoved all in for 159,000. The small blind folded and Ole Schemion, who had a mountain of chips, opted to make the call from the big.

Schemion: {k-Hearts}{3-Hearts}
Newey: {a-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}

The rest of the tabled laughed upon seeing the uphill battle Schemion faced, but they were silenced when the {10-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds} flop gave the German two pair. Newey reacted sharply and was in a daze of disbelief. The {J-Diamonds} turn gave Newey flush outs and even more counterfeit outs, but the {9-Spades} river missed them all.

Reinkemeier Puts an End to Mizzi's Day

Nível 13 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Sorel Mizzi
Sorel Mizzi

Steve O'Dwyer opened the action for 40,000 only to have Sorel Mizzi, who re-entered once yesterday, three-bet all in for 290,000 from the small blind. Tobias Reinkemeier then moved all in over the top from the big and O'Dwyer got out of the way.

Reinkemeier: {j-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}
Mizzi: {a-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}

It was a bad spot for Mizzi, and his best chance of surviving was to catch an ace. The {q-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{4-Spades} flop provided no help, and neither did the {5-Hearts} turn. "Greenstein?" Mizzi asked, referring to the title of the Team PokerStars Pro's book Ace on the River. It was wishful thinking, but a wish that wouldn't come true as the {10-Hearts} blanked on the river. Mizzi hit the rail in 16th place.

A monster pot just went down at the final table that saw Haralabos Voulgaris hit the rail and Martin Finger vault toward the top of the counts.

Get to Know Johannes Strassmann

Nível 11 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Johannes Strassmann
Johannes Strassmann

In the early years, German pro Johannes Strassmann – currently our chip leader in the EPT London £50,000 Super High Roller event - was all over the EPT.

Between the EPT3 Grand Final in March 2007 and EPT Snowfest in Season 6 (March 2010), Johannes cashed in a total of nine events including three final tables and two ninth place finishes. His lifetime live tournament winnings exceed $1.1 million – and the vast majority of that comes from EPTs.

Since March 2010 however – when he finished third at EPT Snowfest for a career best cash of €166,000, Strassmann has been largely off the scene. Today he said he took a break from the live poker circuit for some “personal spiritual development”. He said: “I’ve actually been traveling a lot, all over ... Europe, Thailand and quite a long time in the US. My father is American and I have a huge family over there. He had five sisters, so I have lots and lots of cousins – there’s actually about 200 people in my American family.”

Strassmann hadn’t abandoned poker altogether however. He played the EPT Berlin High Roller last season and has also been playing high stakes cash games at casinos in the Czech Republic and online – “to
make a living”.

He also went in to business, launching a German poker coaching site which subsequently failed. He said: “It’s OK. As an entrepreneur, you expect some ventures to fail.” Originally from Bonn but now living in
Vienna, 28-year-old Strassmann plans to play more live events going forward – including EPT Prague in December, the PCA in January and the Grand Final.

He said: “I’m going to play the High Rollers and someMain Events – the fun ones!” He is also in the process of setting up Europe’s first ever €100,000 Heads-Up tourney in Prague in December.

"That's How You Win Poker Tournaments"

Nível 10 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Erik Seidel
Erik Seidel

Just before the break, Poker Hall of Famer Erik Seidel, who finished runner-up in the Super High Roller in Barcelona, got his stack all in preflop holding the {a-Clubs}{a-Hearts}, which of course was out in front of the {9-Spades}{9-Clubs} of chip leader Johannes Strassmann.

The {k-Clubs}{5-Spades}{8-Spades} flop kept Seidel firmly in the lead, but a sick twist of fate saw the turn and river run out the {7-Hearts} and {6-Spades} respectively. Strassmann hit a runner-runner straight to send a shellshocked Seidel to the rail.

"That's how you win poker tournaments," someone told Strassmann after the hand.
