Johannes Strassmann Leads After Day 1 in The Super High Roller

Nível 8 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Johannes Strassmann
Johannes Strassmann

While UK & Ireland Poker Tour was already in full force in London, the second stop on Season 10 of the European Poker Tour officially kicked off on Friday with the £50,000 Super High Roller. A ton of big names showed up for this exhilarating event, but it was Johannes Strassmann who closed out Day 1 as the chip leader with a massive 1.53 million-chip stack. The German is a well-known fixture on the EPT, having final tabled three events in the past and bubbling two others. All told, Strassmann has nine top-50 finishes on the tour.

Just 32 players remained at the end of Day 1, but late and reentry registration will remain open until 15 minutes before the start of play on Saturday. In total there were 52 entries on Day 1, including 14 reentries.

At the beginning of the day, just eight players were present, one of whom was Team PokerStars Pro Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier. The Frenchman did not benefit from his decision to play from the start as he was knocked out early. Grospellier did not reenter into this event, but he might still do that before Day 2.

As the room filled up, the Germans made up a big portion of the field. All at once, Tobias Reinkemeier, Fabian Quoss, Max Altergott, and Philipp Gruissem showed up. Gruissem had a very tough day, as he was knocked out three times. He can still enter back tomorrow by doingso would become the reentry record holder in Super High Roller events. The other Germans all made it to the next day, as did their fellow countrymen Ole Schemion, Igor Kurganov, and Martin Finger.

John Juanda, runner-up last year at the €50,000 Majestic High Roller at the World Series of Poker Europe, grabbed an early lead when he took a big chunk of chips off Bill Perkins. Perkins busted out shortly afterwards, but he returned and crushed Haralabos Voulgaris’ first bullet.

Voulgaris and Perkins clashed in a huge pot with a set against a straight and flush draw. On a flop of {7-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}, Voulgaris held the {3-Spades}{3-Hearts} for middle set and Perkins had the {5-Clubs}{4-Clubs} for a combo draw. Thanks to a run out of the {4-Hearts} on the turn and {8-Clubs} on the river, Perkins boosted his stack up to 910,000 and remained in the driver seat the entire day before finishing on 760,000.

The youngest EPT winner ever, Mike "Timex" McDonald, made his presence known at the feature table, and he was the one who took Richard Yong’s first stack. McDonald ended the day with a decent pile of chips, and he’ll be looking to make back-to-back Super High Roller final tables after finishing fourth in Barcelona for €269,400.

Sorel Mizzi, Jason Mercier, Richard Yong, Haralabos Voulgaris, Jonathan Duhamel, and Talal Shakerchi all reentered on Day 1, and all managed to survive the day on their second bullet, but in order to win money in this tournament they will have to cash for more than £100,000!

While Perkins was chip leader for a large portion of the day, and Steve O’Dwyer (903,000) got really close, Strassmann finished on top.

There is plenty of poker left to be played in this event, starting with Day 2 on Saturday where the plan is to play down to the final table of eight. Tune back in with PokerNews at 12 p.m. UK time on Satruday as we will bring you all the hand histories, chip counts, photos, and other stories from the felt here in London.

Gruissem Busts for a Third Time

Nível 8 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Philipp Gruissem
Philipp Gruissem

Martin Finger opened for 11,000 from middle position only to have Johannes Strassmann three-bet to 32,000 from the hijack. Philipp Gruissem, who hasn't had much luck today, then four-bet to 53,000 from the cutoff, leaving himself around 100,00 behind.

The button and small blind folded, and then Shawn Buchanan came in with a five-bet to 80,000. Finger got out of the way, as did Strassmann, and Gruissem shoved all in. Buchanan snap-called and Gruissem was in dire straits.

Gruissem: {q-Spades}{q-Hearts}
Buchanan: {k-Clubs}{k-Hearts}

Gruissem was dominated and received no reprieve as the board ran out {8-Clubs}{9-Spades}{5-Clubs}{a-Spades}{3-Diamonds}. With that, Gruissem was sent to the rail for the third time.

It'll be interesting to see if Gruissem will fire a fourth bullet before the start of Day 2 tomorrow.

Shakerchi & Gross Bounded

Nível 8 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Talal Shakerchi
Talal Shakerchi

Talal Shakerchi has been nursing one of the shorter stacks all evening, and he finally found a hand he liked.

We're not sure of the preflop action, but we do know that Shakerchi got his last 165,000 all in holding the {a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds} and was racing against the {10-Spades}{10-Diamonds} of Richard Yong.

"Fifty-fifty," Yong said. The {3-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{3-Diamonds} flop made things interesting as Shakerchi picked up a flush draw to go along with his overs. Unfortunately for him, neither the {4-Hearts} turn nor {4-Clubs} river would prove helpful and Shakerchi was eliminated from the tournament.

Meanwhile, Jeff Gross was eliminated from the tournament, though he stated that he will re-enter here in the last level of the night. No word on whether or not Shakerchi will do the same.

Mizzi Flops Quads to Double Through Yong

Nível 6 : 1,500/3,000, 400 ante
Sorel Mizzi

In one of the last hands before the break, Daniel Negreanu opened for 6,400 from the hijack and received a call from Richard Yong in the cutoff. A short-stacked Sorel Mizzi then three-bet to 28,000 from the button, Negreanu folded and Yong eyed up his opponent's stack before moving all in. Mizzi called off for 67,000 total.

Mizzi: {3-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}
Yong: {k-Clubs}{j-Clubs}

It was a flip, but not after the flop came out {q-Hearts}{3-Spades}{3-Hearts}. Mizzi flopped quads to leave Yong drawing dead. The {5-Clubs} and {9-Clubs} were run out on the turn and river respectively, and then Yong sent some chips over to Mizzi.

"Nice try, Richard," Philipp Gruissem consoled. "Nice try.

Huge Clash Sends Voulgaris Packing, Perkins Soaring

Nível 4 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Bill Perkins was in much worse shape earlier today
Bill Perkins was in much worse shape earlier today

We caught the action on the flop which read {2-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{7-Clubs} Haralabos Voulgaris bet 6,000. Bill Perkins raised it up to 15,000 after which Voulgaris made it 50,000. Perkins put in too much for the call and he was forced to make another raise. This triggered a shove from Voulgaris who put 318,000 across the line.

Perkins gave it some thought and eventually called.

Voulgaris: {3-Hearts}{3-Spades}
Perkins: {4-Clubs}{5-Clubs}

The turn brought the {4-Hearts} and the river the {8-Clubs} making a flush for Perkins. The chips were quickly checked and it turned out that Perkins had Voulgaris covered. Voulgaris made his way to the exit as Perkins started stacking a mountain of chips.

"Billlll Perkinsssss," Philipp Gruissem said in a way only he can as the German strolled over to the table.

"I needed to buy in twice for this much," Perkins said.

"I played a Daniel Negreanu type hand," Perkins added.

"Three-five suited?" Gruissem guessed as everyone at the table started laughing.

"Close enough," Winfred Yu said as play continued with Gruissem as the railbird.

On the very next hand Perkins played against Team PokerStars Pro Jonathan Duhamel. Eventually the board ran out {Q-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{J-Clubs} and Duhamel bet 29,500. Perkins quickly raised to 75,000 and Duhamel looked back down at his cards before folding.

"I'll show," Perkins said with a smile as he tabled {10-Clubs}{10-Hearts}.

"Ooooh, so that's how it works ha!" Gruissem said, and once again everyone started laughing. Perkins is already close to having four times the starting stack and the current tournament chip leader.

Grospellier & Perkins Gone

Nível 2 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Bill Perkins
Bill Perkins

Just prior to the break, we had two players hit the felt. The first to go was Team PokerStars Pro Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier. Unfortunately we missed the details surrounding his exit, but we did catch the elimination of Bill Perkins.

It happened in the last hand before the break when Perkins raised, Jeff Gross called and the flop came down {4-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{6-Clubs}. Gross checked, Perkins bet 4,000 and Gross woke up with a check-raise to 16,000. Perkins responded by moving all in for 120,000 or so and Gross called. "I gave him the sorry look," Gross would say after the hand.

Gross: {9-Spades}{9-Diamonds}
Perkins: {j-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}

Perkins had the best hand preflop, but Gross spiked a set to jump out in front. Neither the {7-Diamonds} turn nor {Q-Clubs} river helped the man they call "Perky," and he hit the rail. Given there are unlimited re-entries here on Day 1, we'd be surprised if both Grospellier and Perkins didn't re-enter.
