Congratulations to Ari Engel, Winner of the 2016 Aussie Millions Main Event for $1.6 Million!

Ari Engel wins!
Ari Engel wins!

What an unbelievable way to end an absolutely epic event,, and with that Ari Engel has become the 2016 Aussie Millions Main Event champion!

Engel's AU$1.6 million victory came at the end of a hard-fought heads-up battle when Tony Dunst attempted to make a tough hero call to double up. Unfortunately for Dunst, his fourth pair was no good against Engel's top pair and he had to settle for a second-place finish worth AU$1 million.

For Engel, the win marked the most remarkable one of his career, but he's certainly no stranger to success. A Canadian that regularly travels the poker tournament circuit across the globe, spent eight early years of his life living in Melbourne, Australia. His travels returned him to the city for the 2016 Aussie Millions and it's all come full circle thanks to this impressive victory. Engel can now add the bracelet to his trophy case and smile from ear to ear with the huge payday he earned.

At the start of Sunday's final table, seven players remained from a starting field of 732 — the fourth-largest Aussie Millions Main Event in its 19-year history. First to go was Australia's own John Apostolidis, and he was followed out the door by one of two female players to reach the final table, Kitty Kuo. Apostolidis took home AU$210,000, and Kuo scored AU$270,000.

The next two places on the payout sheet were filled in by two more Australian's. First it was Dylan Honeyman falling in fifth place for AU$340,000, and then Alexander Lynskey took fourth for AU$445,000. For Lynskey, the run to the final table was extra sweet after he suffered a heartbreaking result in last year's Aussie Millions Main Event. He took a severe beat late in the event and ended in ninth place after promise showed he was ripe for the final table.

Along with the aforementioned Kuo, Samantha Abernathy was the other woman at the final table, and she advanced into the tournament's last trio of players. While she held her own throughout the day, the big stacks ofEngel and Dunst proved too much to overcome. In the end, she moved all in with ten-eight and lost to Engel's ace-nine.

Dunst entered the heads-up duel with the lead, and what a duel it was. The first five eliminations of the final table took 92 hands of play, but heads-up play took 123. Over the course of a few hours, Dunst and Engel traded blow after blow, but it was Engel's punches that were landing with a bit more power as he ground his opponent down. But then, on the 203rd hand of the day, Dunst doubled back to just about even before the two headed into a 45-minute dinner break.

When the couple returned to action, it didn't take long for Engel to go right back on the offensive in a big way. He made an impressive call with fourth pair to pick off Dunst's five-high bluff, and this proved an interesting hand as it was then Dunst who eventually called off his stack incorrectly with four pair to lose out.

For Dunst, a cool seven-figure payday will help him wake up with a smile in the morning, but the spotlight tonight is all about Engel.

"Thanks so much," Engel said with a smile upon receiving congratulations after his way. "It feels awesome!"

Tony Dunst Eliminated in 2nd Place (AU$1,000,000)

Nível 31 : 80,000/160,000, 0 ante
Tony Dunst - 2nd Place

Hand #215: Dunst started on the button and raised his {A-Clubs}{4-Clubs} to 325,000. Engel found the {J-Spades}{7-Clubs} and three-bet to 925,000. Dunst made the call to see a flop come {10-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}, and Engel, with nothing really, bet 825,000 into the pot of 1.9 million. Dunst, having flopped middle pair, made the call.

The {J-Clubs} on the turn gave Engel the best hand, and he fired 1.7 million. Dunst made the call pretty quickly, and off to the river they went.

The {9-Spades} fell on the end, and, with 6.8 million in the pot, Engel shoved all in for effectively 6.1 million. Dunst tanked long and hard, and the more he thought, the more it became apparent that something was telling him Engel was up to something. After all, Dunst had just fourth pair on board.

Eventually, Dunst made the call, but all he could do was muck his hand upon seeing Engel's pair of jacks.

Dunst, who spent several years of his life living in Melbourne, Australia, earned AU$1 million for his runner-up finish, which was better than his previous best score of $452,729.

Hand #92: Tony Dunst folded the button and action was on Samantha Abernathy in the small blind. With just about 15 big blinds left (1.5 million) she moved all in with {10-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}. Ari Engel was quick to call in the big blind with {A-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}.

Abernathy needed to improve to stay alive. While Engel flopped two pair, Abernathy was anything but drawing dead after the {A-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} flop.

She needed running tens or eights, or a seven or queen to stay alive. She missed those outs with the {J-Hearts} on the turn and {8-Spades} on the river, and made her exit in 3rd place for AU$625,000.

Tony Dunst and Ari Engel are guaranteed AU$1 million but will soon be battling it out heads up for the AU$1.6 million first place prize and the coveted 2016 Aussie Millions Poker Championship Main Event gold bracelet.

Hand #34: From under the gun, Dunst raised to 125,000 with the {A-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds}. Ari Engel called on the button with an unknown hand, and then Dylan Honeyman reraised from the small blind to 380,000 with the {J-Spades}{J-Hearts}. Dunst came back over the top with a four-bet to 800,000, Engel folded, and then Honeyman moved all in for 1.5 million. Dunst called, and the cards were on their backs.

Honeyman tripped up on the {J-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{3-Clubs} flop, but Dunst did pick up a Broadway straight draw. The turn was the {K-Clubs} and didn't change much, as Dunst still needed a queen on the river to win the hand and knock Honeyman out.

But then, the dealer slapped the {Q-Spades} on the river and Dunst had made the straight. He won the pot to send Honeyman to the payout desk to collect AU$340,000 in prize money.

With that, the remaining four players were all guaranteed AU$445,000.

Hand #29: Action folded to Ari Engel on the button and he raised to 135,000 with {9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}. Kitty Kuo in the small blind shoved all in for 690,000 with {A-Spades}{J-Diamonds} and Dylan Honeyman folded his big blind after giving it some thoughts. Ari Engel made the call and Kuo was at risk in the classic race situation.

The board ran out {7-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}{Q-Spades}{6-Clubs} and Kitty Kuo made her exit in 6th place AU$270,000. The remaining 5 players are guaranteed AU$340,000 from here on out.

Hand #11: Abernathy Again Saved by 6 on the River

Nível 27 : 30,000/60,000, 10,000 ante
Samantha Abernathy
Samantha Abernathy

Hand #11: Action folded to Samantha Abernaty in the cutoff and she raised to 125,000 with {A-Hearts}{K-Clubs}.

The button and small blind folded but Dylan Honeyman in the big blind found {A-Clubs}{A-Diamonds} and three-bet to 260,000 with a stack of 1.2 million total.

Abernathy contemplated what to do for a bit, and eventually shoved all in. Honeyman didn't need much time calling all in.

Abernathy was in terrible shape with her ace king, and the flop only made things worse. On {5-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{9-Clubs} Honeyman's chances of winning increased to 99%.

The {7-Diamonds} on the turn opened the door for a chop, but Abernathy didn't have a whole lot of outs to do so as the six of clubs wouldn't be a good card to hit.

In fact the {6-Hearts} hit and the two of them chopped it up. Yesterday Abernathy was saved by a six on the river when she got it in with sixes against kings, and now a six saved her again!

Hand #3: Action was on Apostolidis under the gun plus one and he made it 205,000 with {A-Hearts}{K-Clubs}. Action folded to Samantha Abernathy in the small blind and she shoved all in for 2.4 million with {Q-Spades}{Q-Hearts}. Ari Engel quickly released from the big blind, Apostolidis made the call.

The flop came {8-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}, doing nothing for Apostolidis. The {4-Hearts} on the turn was no help and neither was the {7-Clubs} on the river.

John Apostolidis made his exit in 7th place, good for AU$210,000. The six remaining players are guaranteed AU$270,000 from here on out.

Who'll Win the 2016 Aussie Millions Poker Championship Main Event?

Ari Engel in pole position
Ari Engel in pole position

After a grueling battle to get down from 40 players to a final table of 7 on Day 4, today is the day the 2016 Aussie Millions Poker Championship Main Event champion will be crowned. All 7 players had a day of rest and are guaranteed AU$210,000. But each and every one of them is eyeing that AU$1,600,000 first place prize.

Well rounded grinder Ari Engel is in best position, starting out in pole position with a staggering 8,155,000 (136 big blinds). Engel's biggest cash to date is $177,045 for winning the Punta Cana Poker Classic 2014so things must go real sour today - a Philip Hilm kind of level sour - for him to not break that personal record today.

Engel has steep competition, all just as hungry for the title. WPT host Tony Dunst is the biggest of Engel's rivals, bringing 100 big blinds to the final table this afternoon. It's already somewhat of a fairy tale for Dunst as he had given up on playing when he lost one of the two $5,000 chips that he was going to buy in with. Angered with himself and plenty flustered, the American World Poker Tour host was ready to up and leave Melbourne altogether, but friends talked him back into playing, and now he has reached the final stage in an epic turnaround of fortune.

The Aussie Millions Main Event final table is also headlines by two female players making their appearance. Kitty Kuo has kept her unbelievable streak of deep runs alive and is sure to cross the million dollar live earnings mark here today. Things really have to go her side today for her to win, as she starts out with just 17 big blinds. Samantha Abernathy is in better position with 41 big blinds, and she's sure to triple her live earnings here today.

Australian day 2 chip leader Dylan Honeyman starts out as the shortest stack in the field with just 885,000, good for 15 big blinds at the start of the day.

The Main Event final table starts at 12:30 local time (30 minutes from now). The live stream and our coverage with hole cards up, starts on half an hour delay.
