Tony Dunst Leads the Aussie Millions Main Event After Day 3

Nível 19 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Tony Dunst
Tony Dunst

Tony Dunst was once kicked out of the country of Australia after living here for quite some time and overstaying his allowance, but he's back and on a mission to win the 2016 Aussie Millions Main Event. To help him reach that ultimate goal, Dunst amassed the most chips on Day 3 and will lead the final 40 players into Day 4 with 1.627 million in chips.

After he finished extremely strong on Wednesday's Day 2 with a double knockout of Julius Colman and Richard Ashby, Dunst was up to his tricks again on Day 3 with another double elimination. This time it was Philipp Gruissem and Pascal Hartmann that he sent to the rail thanks to flopping an ace with ace-jack against queens and nines.

Finishing Day 3 with the second largest stack was James Obst with 1.196 million in chips. Then Samantha Abernathy (1.195 million), Alexander Lynskey (1.073 million), and Artur Koren (1.009 million) rounded out the top five.

When the day began, 150 players remained. The top 80 spots were set to reach the money, but after four levels of play, 81 still remained at the dinner break. Upon return, it didn't take long for the bubble to burst, and it was Mark Bevan falling as the last player to go home empty-handed.

Bevan was all in with the {A-Clubs}{K-Spades} against the {K-Diamonds}{K-Hearts} for Koren. The flop, turn, and river stayed clean of an ace, and Koren scored the elimination. With that, everyone left had locked up at least AU$15,000.

From there, the eliminations quickly began to mount. First, it was Liv Boeree who hit the rail in 80th place, followed by Joe Hachem in 79th. Others to finish in the money were Max Silver (72nd), Sam Cohen (61st), Nick Yunis (54th), Jared Graham (53rd), and Michael Egan (45th).

A flurry of eliminations at the end of the night saw Daniel Engels hit the rail in 44th, Sam Steindl fall in 43rd, Victor Teng finish in 42nd, and Jimmy Siu bust in 41st to close out play. In fact, it was Dunst who busted Steindl in one of the final hands to help pad his chip lead.

With Day 3 done and dusted, the surviving competitors will return at 12:30 p.m. local time to Crown Melbourne to further battle towards the top prize of AU$1.6 million. All those remaining are guaranteed at least AU$25,000, but as we all know, those left have their sights set on much, much more.

Obst Drills The River to Eliminate Teng

Nível 19 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Victor Teng
Victor Teng

Victor Teng raised before the flop to 22,000 and James Obst three-bet to 57,000. The action folded back to Teng and he moved all in for 285,000 chips. Obst shrugged and called, creating a huge all-in pot.

Teng: {J-Hearts}{J-Clubs}
Obst: {8-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}

The board ran out {5-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}{A-Clubs}{2-Spades}{8-Hearts} and when the eight hit the river, Teng threw the chips he had in his hand on the felt. Teng ran away from the table and folded himself over the rail in disappointment. Obst remained silent as he stacked his newly won chips, and Teng ultimately returned to the table to shake hands with his former opponent.s

Daniel Engels Eliminated

Nível 19 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Artur Koren vs Daniel Engels
Artur Koren vs Daniel Engels

It was a battle of the blinds, and it was a set up in the blinds as Artur Koren and Daniel Engels clashed.

It started off with Artur Koren raising from the small blind and Daniel Engels calling from the big. Koren fired a 28,000 continuation bet on {6-Spades}{7-Spades}{J-Hearts} and Engels raised to 76,000. Koren made the call.

The turn came the {A-Hearts} and Koren checked. Engels made a bet of 116,000 (with 170,000 behind) and Koren called.

Koren checked again on the {3-Diamonds} river. Engels shoved all in and Koren snap called by tossing in some chips.

Engels tabled {6-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} for a flopped two pair, but he was out turned by Koren who showed {A-Spades}{7-Clubs}.

Daniel Reijmer Loses Ace-King to Ace-King and Busts in 47th Place

Nível 19 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Daniel Reijmer
Daniel Reijmer

Daniel Reijmer made it 23,000 from early position and his neighbor Artur Koren three-bet to 60,000. Action folded to Samantha Abernathy on the button and she three-bet to 165,000.

Both blinds folded and action was back on Daniel Reijmer. He shoved all in for around 425,000 and Koren folded just about instantly. Abernathy wasn't the happiest person in the world, but she did toss in a single 1,000-chip after about 10 seconds.

Daniel Reijmer: {A-Hearts}{K-Hearts}
Samantha Abernathy: {A-Diamonds}{K-Spades}

What was destined to be a split pot, with a slight edge for Reijmer as his ace-king was suited, ended up a whole lot more exciting on the {K-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds} flop.

The {10-Diamonds} on the turn immediately sealed the deal for Abernathy and Reijmer got up from the table to make his exit. The {7-Diamonds} on the river was there just to make things official, it couldn't and wouldn't save Reijmer who collected AU$25,000 for his 47th place finish.

Another Double Knockout for Dunst; Gruissem and Hartmann Eliminated

Nível 18 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Philipp Gruissem
Philipp Gruissem

Yesterday, Tony Dunst knocked out both Richard Ashby and Julius Colman in a big hand with kings to queens and jacks, and now he again knocked out two players in one hand.

Philipp Gruissem raised to 18,000 from the hijack seat, and Pascal Hartmann shoved all in from the cutoff seat for 108,000. Tony Dunst, in the small blind, made the call and action was back on Gruissem. Gruissem shoved all in for 229,000, and Dunst added the chips to make the call.

Pascal Hartmann: {9-Clubs}{9-Hearts}
Philipp Gruissem: {Q-Spades}{Q-Clubs}
Tony Dunst: {A-Diamonds}{J-Spades}

The flop came {A-Clubs}{K-Clubs}{8-Clubs}, favoriting Dunst. Gruissem was looking for a club while Hartmann was looking for a nine. The {7-Spades} on the turn and {8-Diamonds} on the river were both blanks and Dunst collected all the chips in the pot.

"NEVER GIVE UP!"

Nível 18 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Mikel Habb
Mikel Habb

Mikel Habb just found himself all in before the flop for his tournament life, and he was up against Martin Rowe, seated directly on his left.

"Let's go!" Habb screamed off the top of his lungs upon seeing the cards of his opponent.

Habb: {A-Clubs}{K-Hearts}
Rowe: {9-Diamonds}{9-Spades}

The flop brought out {K-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{J-Hearts} and Habb shouted, "Yes!! Come on!!"

On the turn the {6-Hearts} hit, and Habb cheered again, before bursting out in a celebration after the {4-Clubs} hit the river.

"That's how you do it!!" Habb screamed.

"Ship it!!" Habb continued, "Ship it to papa! Ship it to papa!"

After sitting back down and stacking up his chips, Habb screamed loud enough for the entire room to hear, "NEVER GIVE UP!!"

Koren Makes a Monster Call, Sends Bansal Packing

Nível 17 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Artur Koren
Artur Koren

Action folded to Artur Koren on the button and he limped in for 6,000. The small blind completed and Paawan Bansal in the big blind checked his option.

The flop came {K-Clubs}{10-Spades}{3-Spades} and the small blind checked. Bansal lead out and Koren and the small blind both called.

The {7-Hearts} fell on the turn and the small blind checked again. Bansal bet out 36,000 now and just Koren called, the small blind folded.

With the {A-Diamonds} completing the board Bansal had 96,000 left. He shoved all in and Koren had a real decision. He tanked about it for a bit, smiled and asked if Bansal had {Q-}{J-} maybe, and eventually called by tossing in a single chip.

"Good call" admitted Bansal, showing {J-Hearts}{9-Clubs} not much later.

Koren tabled {9-Diamonds}{10-Hearts} and took down the pot. Paawan Bansal made his exit in 66th place, netting him AU$66,000.

Cracked Aces Send Joe Hachem to the Rail in 79th Place

Nível 17 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Joe Hachem
Joe Hachem

More than 10 years ago, Joe Hachem changed the face of poker in Australia when he won the 2005 World Series of Poker. Since then, he's been the most famous poker player in the "Land Down Under," and it was exciting to see both him and his brother, Tony, make a deep run in this event. Unfortunately for Joe, his journey just came to an end due to a bad beat.

It happened when Hachem opened for 13,000 from early position and action folded all the way around to Cankai Zhang in the big blind. He opted to defend and proceeded to check-call a bet of 15,000 on the {j-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{7-Hearts} flop. When the dealer burned and turned the {5-Spades}, Zhang checked for a second time and Hachem moved all in for 78,000. Zhang thought for a bit and then made the call.

Zhang: {k-Spades}{7-Spades}
Hachem: {a-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}

Hachem got it in good, but Zhang was drawing very much alive with his paired seven and spade draw. Hachem, who was flanked by his sons on the rail, look skyward as the dealer burned one last time and put out the {6-Spades}.

Zhang spiked his flush and a frustrated Hachem, who was also being followed by a documentary film crew, had no choice but to make his way to the payout desk.

Mark Bevan Bubbles the 2016 Aussie Millions Poker Championship

Nível 17 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
The Bubble Bursts
The Bubble Bursts

Artur Koren opened under the gun plus one to 18,000. Two spots behind him, it was Mark Bevan shoving all in for 85,000 total. Action folded back around to Koren, and he instantly tossed in a 5,000 chip to call.

Play was halted at that moment till the hands at all other tables were finished. A big rail gathered around the table as the tournament director asked both players to open their cards.

Mark Bevan: {A-Clubs}{K-Spades}
Artur Koren: {K-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}

The flop came {Q-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{5-Spades} and the tournament speaker announced Bevan needed an ace or running straight cards. While Mustapha Kanit shouted running fives was also a possibility for Bevan to come out on top, the {2-Spades} had already hit the turn.

"An ace and an ace only" announced the tournament director.

It wasn't meant to be for Bevan, as the {6-Clubs} completed the board and the American player had to make his exit.

With that, the remaining 80 players all made the money and were guaranteed a AU$15,000 payday. The multiple short stacks in the tournament let out a big sigh at once, but we'll see if they can run it up now that they're in the money.
