Phil Ivey Defends LK Boutique $250,000 Challenge Title to Win AU$2,205,000

Nível 14 : 25,000/50,000, 5,000 ante
Phil Ivey wins for a third time!
Phil Ivey wins for a third time!

Back in 2012, Phil Ivey topped a field of 16 entries to win the LK Boutique $250,000 Challenge for AU$2 million, and two years after that he'd win it again by outlasting a field of 46 entries to capture the AU$4 million first-place prize.

Those were impressive feats, but now Ivey has done the unthinkable by defending his title to win the prestigious event for the third time in four years, not to mention the AU$2.205 million top prize. That means the three largest cashes of Ivey's career have all come from the Aussie Millions' AU$250,000 Challenge.

This year, Ivey conquered a field of 25 total entries, which climbed from Day 1's 23 thanks to one late registrant, Brian Rast, and a reentry from Isaac Haxton. That created a prize pool of AU$6.105 million that was distributed to the top five finishers.

The day began with a flurry of action at Table 10. In fact, the first three hands of the day resulted in three eliminations. The first to go was the short-stacked Ole Schemion, who shoved with the {k-Clubs}{6-Clubs} and failed to overcome the {9-Diamonds}{9-Hearts} of Doug "WCGRider" Polk. In the next hand, Igor Kurganov got it in with sixes only to run into Polk's pocket sevens, and one hand after that Rast shoved with the {a-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} and lost to the {a-Hearts}{q-Diamonds} of Haxton. That meant Rast, who finished fifth in the Aussie Millions Main Event the day before, got to play three hands for his AU$250,000 buy-in.

After Jason Mo ran the {k-Spades}{q-Spades} into the {a-Diamonds}{a-Hearts} of Scott Seiver to bust in ninth, the final table of eight was set. From there, Dan Smith fell when his {4-Hearts}{4-Clubs} failed to crack the {k-Diamonds}{k-Clubs} of Ivey, and then Ivey got lucky with the {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts} to eliminate Isaac Haxton, who held the {k-Spades}{k-Clubs}, in seventh place.

Not long after, the bubble burst in Level 11 (12,000/24,000/3,000) when Richard Yong, who two days prior topped a field of 70 entries to win the $100,000 Challenge for AU$1.87 million, three-bet all in for 307,000 over the top of Ivey's open to 55,000. A call was made, and the cards were tabled.

Yong: {a-Spades}{2-Spades}
Ivey: {q-Clubs}{j-Clubs}

Yong was ahead, but Ivey was drawing to two live cards. The {k-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds} flop kept Yong in the lead, but then the dealer burned and turned the {Q-Spades} to pair Ivey. Yong needed an ace on the river to survive, but it wasn't meant to be as the {5-Diamonds} bricked. Yong left empty-handed in sixth place while the remaining five players were guaranteed at least AU$551,000.

Former $250,000 Challenge champ Erik Seidel was the first in-the-money elimination after getting his short stack in with the {a-Diamonds}{3-Clubs} only to run into the {k-Hearts}{k-Diamonds} of Polk. The board ran out a clean {8-Spades}{7-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}{j-Spades}, and Seidel was out in fifth.

It took a little while for the next elimination to occur, but it happened when Mike "Timex" McDonald made a flush on the turn to knock out Seiver, who had fired three bullets into the event. That means with the AU$735,000 prize Seiver received for his fourth-place finish, he only lost AU$15,000.

In the first hand back from the dinner break, Polk three-bet all in with the {a-Clubs}{5-Clubs} only to have McDonald four-bet all in over the top with the {a-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}. Ivey, the initial raiser, got out of the way, and the flop came down {5-Hearts}{q-Clubs}{8-Clubs}. Even though McDonald flopped top pair, Polk picked up a flush draw and a pair of his own. Polk had two pulls to get there, but ultimately he was left wanting as the {3-Hearts} blanked on the turn followed by the {9-Spades} on the river.

Heads-up play began with Ivey holding 3.61 million in chips to McDonald's 2.64 million, but the defending champ was able to whittle away his opponent before getting lucky to finish the job, which Ivey acknowledged in his winner's interview. The final hand happened when McDonald raised to 100,000 and then snap-called off for approximately 1.3 million when Ivey moved all in.

Ivey: {k-Clubs}{q-Clubs}
McDonald: {a-Spades}{q-Hearts}

McDonald was in a great spot to double, but then the flop came down {10-Spades}{10-Clubs}{k-Spades}. Ivey paired his king, and suddenly McDonald was in need of either an ace, jack, or some other lucky runout of the cards. The {8-Hearts} turn wasn't what he was looking for, and neither was the {9-Hearts} river. With that, McDonald finished as runner-up for just under AU$1.6 million, while Ivey successfully defended his LK Boutique $250,000 Challenge title. It also moved Ivey into third place ahead of Dan Colman on the all-time money list.

Mike McDonald - 2nd Place
Mike McDonald - 2nd Place

In what would be the last hand of the tournament, Mike "Timex" McDonald raised to 100,000 from the button and then snap-called off for right around 1.3 million when Phil Ivey announced that he was all in.

Ivey: {k-Clubs}{q-Clubs}
McDonald: {a-Spades}{q-Hearts}

McDonald was in a great spot to double, but then the flop came down {10-Spades}{10-Clubs}{k-Spades}. Ivey paired his king, and suddenly McDonald was in need of either an ace, jack or some other lucky run out of the cards. The {8-Hearts} turn wasn't what he was looking for, and neither was the {9-Hearts} river.

McDonald finished as runner-up for AU$1,592,500 while Ivey has successfully defended his LK Boutique AU$250,000 Challenge title, while also winning it for the third time in four years!

In the first hand back from the dinner break, Phil Ivey raised to 110,000 from the button only to have Doug "WCGRider" Polk three-bet all in from the small blind for 890,000. Mike "Timex" McDonald thought for a few moments before moving all in over the top from the big blind, and that inspired Ivey to ditch his hand.

Polk: {a-Clubs}{5-Clubs}
McDonald: {a-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}

Polk was in trouble, but he got some help on the {5-Hearts}{q-Clubs}{8-Clubs} flop. Even though McDonald flopped top pair, Polk picked up a flush draw and a pair of his own. Polk had to pulls to get there, but ultimately he was left wanting as the {3-Hearts} blanked on the turn followed by the {9-Spades} on the river.

Scott Seiver Eliminated in 4th Place (AU$735,000)

Scott Seiver - 4th Place
Scott Seiver - 4th Place

After firing three bullets in this event, each worth AU$250,000, Scott Seiver has been eliminated in fourth place.

Mike McDonald raised on the button to 60,000, and Seiver called from the big blind before the dealer placed out the {A-Spades}{7-Spades}{6-Hearts} flop. Seiver checked, and McDonald bet 50,000. Seiver check-raised all in for 206,000, and McDonald quickly called. McDonald had the {K-Spades}{8-Spades} for a flush draw, and Seiver had the {7-Hearts}{4-Spades} for middle pair.

The turn was the {5-Spades}, and that quickly put an end to things before the {3-Diamonds} completed the board on the river.

With that, Seiver earned AU$750,000 for his fourth-place finish, losing just AU$15,000 on the event. McDonald moved up to about a million in chips.

Ivey Picks Off Polk's Bluff

Nível 11 : 12,000/24,000, 3,000 ante
Phil Ivey
Phil Ivey

Doug Polk raised to 55,000 on the button, and Phil Ivey called from the big blind before the dealer fanned out the {10-Hearts}{3-Spades}{2-Diamonds} flop. Ivey checked, and Polk checked behind.

The turn was the {2-Hearts} to pair the board, and Ivey led with a bet of 75,000. Polk made the call, and the dealer completed the board with the {6-Clubs}. Ivey bet 200,000, but Polk had other things in mind and raised things up to 580,000. Ivey went deep into the tank, thinking for several long minutes.

It looked as if his decision to call or fold changed every 15 seconds in his head, and at one point he was slamming the amount of chips to make the call up and down on the felt behind his cards, unsure of what to do. After he did that, he checked back at his hole cards, then fired in the call.

"I'm bluffing," said Polk, turning over the {A-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} for ace high. Ivey tabled the {10-Clubs}{9-Diamonds} for two pair, tens and deuces, and he won the pot.

Ivey moved to a commanding position with over 58% of the chips in play.

From under the gun, Erik Seidel moved all in for what looked to be between 250,000 and 300,000. Play folded around to Doug Polk in the big blind, and he quickly made the call after having woke up to the {K-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}. Seidel had the {A-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}.

No help came for Seidel on the {8-Spades}{7-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}{J-Spades}, and he was eliminated in fifth place for a payday worth AU$551,000.

Richard Yong Bubbles LK Boutique AU$250,000 Challenge

Richard Yong

Two days ago Richard Yong topped a field of 70 entrants to win the AU$100,000 Challenge for AU$1,870,000. His good friend, Phil Ivey, joined him for the winner's photo, but now the defending champ has sent the businessman to the rail.

It happened when Ivey opened for 55,000 and Yong moved all in from the big blind for 307,000. Ivey dropped in a call and the cards were tabled.

Yong: {a-Spades}{2-Spades}
Ivey: {q-Clubs}{j-Clubs}

On Ya Bike, Ike

Nível 11 : 12,000/24,000, 3,000 ante
Isaac Haxton
Isaac Haxton

Doug Polk raised to 55,000 from under the gun, Phil Ivey called on the button, and then Isaac Haxton reraised all in from the big blind for what looked to be between 700,000 and 800,000. After Polk folded, Ivey went deep into the tank. He counted out the chips to make the call, but couldn't quite seem to get up the courage to push them into the middle. Eventually, though, Ivey did call, and this is when he saw the bad news.

Haxton tabled the {K-Spades}{K-Clubs}, and the cowboys had Ivey's {A-Hearts}{K-Hearts} in bad shape.

The {A-Clubs}{J-Spades}{6-Spades} flop gave Ivey the lead with a pair of aces, and Haxton was left needing to come from behind. The turn was the {A-Diamonds}, and that meant Haxton was drawing dead going to the river. The {6-Hearts} completed the board to finish Ivey with a full house and send Haxton out the door in seventh place.

With that, Ivey moved back into the chip lead with what should be around 2.7 million in chips. Remember, he's won this event twice in the four previous years it's been held, first in 2012 and then again in 2014. Last year, Ivey defeated Haxton heads up to earn the title.

Could this one be Ivey's third LK Boutique $250,000 Challenge title?

The flop, turn, and river ran out {9-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{7-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}{8-Clubs}, and Smith was out in eighth place. Ivey improved to over 1.8 million.

Mo Runs Into Pocket Aces

Nível 10 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Jason Mo
Jason Mo

Jason Mo shoved his last 275,000 or so all in from middle position and action folded to Scott Seiver, who called from the big blind.

Mo: {k-Spades}{q-Spades}
Seiver: {a-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}

Seiver woke up with the granddaddy of all hands, and Mo needed some luck to stay alive. The {9-Spades}{9-Clubs}{5-Diamonds} flop was as dry as could be, and the {J-Diamonds} turn left Mo drawing to a ten. The {K-Clubs} river was not it, and Mo took his leave in ninth place.

With that, the final table is set. The final eight players will now take an hour break and relocate to the Exhibition Hall to play it out at the TV table.
