Ryan Riess Seeking to Continue Strong Year After Bagging Big

Nível 6 : 300/600, 100 ante
Ryan Riess

The World Series of Poker Europe Main Event got under way after a couple of weeks of preliminary events, and Day 1a pulled in a strong turnout that saw a number of top players advance with big stacks.

One player to keep an eye on going forward is undoubtedly Ryan Riess.

The 2013 WSOP Main Event champ followed up his big win with a lackluster 2014 and then a couple of slightly stronger years, and he's back to "Riess the Beast" status here in 2017. Riess has pocketed over $1.4 million in prize money already this year, highlighted by a WPT title in Florida and a third-place finish in the $10,000 Heads-Up Championship at this summer's WSOP.

Riess arrived in Rozvadov for WSOP Europe and made an immediate impact, stepping up to the plate for the €25,000 High Roller. Unfazed by the elite competition, Riess navigated to a fourth-place finish just two nights ago for €230,071.

In the Main Event, Riess continued his hot streak by bagging 150,400 from his 50,000 starting stack. It's far too early to look this far ahead, but Riess has a chance to join Phil Hellmuth as the only players to win both the WSOP Main Event and the WSOP Europe Main Event.

Overall registration numbers were strong with about 230 firing the €10,000. With most previous WSOPE Main Events sitting between 300 and 400 entries, this has the makings for one of the biggest fields in the history of the event, although reentries are allowed this time around.

Of those who did make it through to Monday's Day 2, Markus Durnegger holds the unofficial chip lead with 246,200. Former November Niner Pierre Neuville (239,000), Piotr Franczak (169,800), Markus Ross (157,400) and Sam Grafton (147,000) also bagged big.

Defending champ Kevin MacPhee also found a bag. MacPhee got a big stack early on when he got in a big confrontation with John Duthie, who was playing as aggressively as anyone in the room. MacPhee flopped a set of tens and got in a raise on the flop against Duthie's top pair, and the rest of the money went in on the turn when MacPhee added a flush draw, which he missed.

Others making it through included Davidi Kitai, David Peters, Niall Farrell, Adrian Mateos and Sergio Aido.

Some who fell were Kristen Bicknell, Dario Sammartino and Maria Ho.

Those players and more will have another shot with Sunday's 1b, which features another noon start and more coverage here on PokerNews/

Hakim Crippled After Tough Beat

Nível 6 : 300/600, 100 ante
Jeffrey Hakim
Jeffrey Hakim

Jeff Hakim was deep in the tank when we got to his table. He had bet 10,500 from the button and Jon Kalmar was all in with {q-Hearts}{k-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{2-Clubs} on the board. It was 56,400 and Hakim thought for a couple of minutes before an agitated player demanded a clock. Hakim disputed the clock call, saying he had only been thinking two minutes and it was a huge pot. Eventually, Dan Shak succeeded in calming the player down and he rescinded the clock call.

Moments later, Hakim called.

Hakim: {a-Spades}{j-Clubs}
Kalmar: {k-Spades}{q-Clubs}

Kalmar moved to exit but the dealer burned and turned a {7-Clubs} to give him a flush. Hakim could only shake his head.

Riess Wins a Big One

Nível 5 : 250/500, 75 ante
Ryan Riess
Ryan Riess

Ryan Riess raised to 1,300 from the cutoff and was called by the player in the small blind and Steven van Zadelhoff in the big blind.

The flop came {8-Spades}{7-Spades}{4-Clubs}, both the small blind and Van Zadelhoff checked. Riess bet 2,000, the player in the small blind folded, Van Zadelhoff raised to 7,000 but then Riess three-bet to 19,700. Van Zadelhoff took some time to think but then made the call.

The turn brought them the {4-Diamonds}, Van Zadelhoff checked again. Riess now fired 21,100 and Van Zadelhoff looked at the board and the possibilities there. He decided to call.

The river completed the board with the {9-Hearts}, Van Zadelhoff checked for the final time, Riess took all his yellow 5,000-value chips and put them in as a bet which was around 65,000 which left him with around 3,000 behind. Van Zadelhoff went into the tank. After a minute or two he folded.

"Show one!" Van Zadelhoff said to Riess.

"Not during the WSOP Main Event." Riess replied while collecting the pot.

Grafton Doubles Through Schemion

Sam Grafton, pictured in an earlier event.

We found Sam Grafton all in for what looked like about 40,000 in a bloated pot with {7-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{a-Spades}{6-Diamonds} on the board. Ole Schemion counted out calling chips and put them in.

Schemion: {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts}
Grafton: {a-Diamonds}{k-Spades}

Grafton had a huge edge fading only three queens and the river was a {j-Clubs}.

Duthie Eliminated By Reigning Champ MacPhee

Nível 3 : 150/300, 25 ante
Kevin MacPhee
Kevin MacPhee

The flop read {10-Spades}{K-Spades}{7-Clubs} and Simon Wiggins, in the small blind, and John Duthie, in the hijack, had checked. Kevin MacPhee bet 1,600 from the button. Wiggins called but Duthie decided to raise to 5,000, MacPhee three-bet to 13,200. Wiggins got out of the way but Duthie decided to call.

The turn brought them the {Q-Clubs}, Duthie bet 16,000, MacPhee shoved for 21,525 and Duthie snap-called even though MacPhee had him covered.

"Do you want to run it once or twice?" Duthie said jokingly.

Kevin MacPhee: {10-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}
John Duthie: {K-Clubs}{2-Clubs}

The {2-Diamonds} on the river completed the board which gave Duthie two pair, kings and deuces, but that wasn't enough against the set of tens MacPhee had flopped. Duthie was eliminated and got up from the table. The two players shook hands and Duthie indicated he'd try again tomorrow.

Rudziankov Straight Flushes Sammartino

Nível 3 : 150/300, 25 ante
Dario Sammartino, pictured in an earlier event.
Dario Sammartino, pictured in an earlier event.

Dario Sammartino raised to 750 from the under-the-gun position and action folded to Artur Rudziankov in the big blind. Rudziankov called.

The flop came {8-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{7-Clubs}, Rudziankov check-called the 800 bet of Sammartino.

They both checked on the {10-Hearts} on the turn. The flop brought them the {8-Clubs} to complete the board. Rudziankov bet 2,200, Sammartino looked at his chips and then decided to raise to 7,925. Now Rudziankov had a decision to take. He decided to re-raise to 28,800. Sammartino was not happy and sat up. Looked at his cards, shook his head and gave Rudziankov a few good stares. He then looked at the board again and unhappily made the call.

Rudziankov showed {J-Hearts}{9-Hearts} for a straight flush and Sammartino looked at his cards again. He then just mucked them. Rudziankov raked in the pot and didn't say anything.

Moorman Bluffs Off Before Break

Nível 2 : 150/300, 0 ante
Chris Moorman
Chris Moorman

Chris Moorman was in the big blind and bet 9,000 into a pot of 12,000 on a board of {4-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}. His opponent in the cutoff thought briefly and then flicked in a call. Moorman showed {a-Diamonds}{8-Hearts} for the nut blocker and ace-high, and he mucked it when the {k-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} was turned over.

Players are now on break.
