Kenny Hallaert Building Toward Another Possible Final Table Run After Day 4

Nível 20 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Kenny Hallaert
Kenny Hallaert

When Mark Newhouse made back-to-back World Series of Poker Main Event final tables in 2013 and 2014, it was lauded as one of the most improbable accomplishments in poker history. It was a first in the era of 6,000-plus player fields, and many figured it wouldn't happen again for years if it ever did.

However, Kenny Hallaert is threatening to pull the double just three years after Newhouse logged his last November Nine appearance. He finished Day 4 of the 2017 Main Event with 4,145,000, the third biggest stack left in the 297-player field.

The 35-year-old Belgian veteran grinder and part-time tournament director finished sixth last year for just under $1.5 million, and he called it "an indescribable feeling" to make that final table. There's still a long way to go, but with less than five percent of the field remaining, it's conceivable to start dreaming on a repeat.

Hallaert's pacing well ahead of this point last year, when he said he bagged 1.6 million. However, he knows better than perhaps anyone left how much of the grind still remains.

"I don't want to focus too much on going back to back final table," he said. "The way to the final table is still so long. We need to play three full days. I can just finish 250th tomorrow, it can happen. I don't have high hopes just yet."

Hallaert put together his crushing day despite being seated at one of the toughest tables in the tournament. Few would voluntarily choose to sit with the likes of Charlie Carrel and Max Silver, but Hallaert had to deal with the former for much of his Day 4 and the latter for the later stages of the night.

Carrel tried getting the better of Hallaert just before bagging time, but all he did was contribute to the Belgian's monstrous stack. Hallaert flopped top pair with queen-jack and bet the flop, only to have Carrel raise him in position. Hallaert called and then called a sizable turn bet, and Carrel gave up when an ace of hearts hit that completed a three-flush. The Brit lost almost 1 million to Hallaert by the time the hand finished.

Hallaert also dragged a major pot with a set of eights when he faded an opponent's ace-high flush draw.

"Luckily my hand held up, the story of my WSOP really," he said. "In all the big pots, my hand held up. An important part of being successful is your big hands holding up."

The only players finishing ahead of Hallaert were Damian Salas (4,678,000) and Sebastien Comel (4,198,000). JP Kelly (3,923,000), Richard Gryko (3,559,000), Jonas Mackoff (3,076,000) and Ben Lamb (2,746,000) also tote sizable stacks into Day 5.

Another player to bag chips was 888poker Ambassador Dominik Nitsche. The three-time bracelet winner has 1,404,000. Not one of the biggest counts left by any means, but still plenty with the big blind sitting at 20,000.

"I'll take it!" he said. "It's OK. There were never any big pots, just lots of small ones."

Dominik Nitsche

Not only does Nitsche find himself still in contention for a top prize in excess of $8 million, along with over $35,000 locked up at the current payout level, he won a little prize from 888poker for being the last Ambassador standing. He outlasted fellow Ambassador Sofia Lovgren, who made a deep run but busted late in Day 4. Nitsche will receive a package to WSOP Europe in Rozvadov.

"So much fun," he said. "And even if I lost, even if somehow I lost, I could still just say that I've still won more bracelets. That's a joke by the way, make sure people know that it's a joke!"

Everyone who busted during Day 4 did so in the money, as the bubble burst to end Day 3. Former Main Event champs, Carlos Mortensen, Joe Cada and Scotty Nguyen were all among those falling during the course of play. The latter went out 549th when he jammed the last of his chips in with ace-seven and ran into ace-king, thus ensuring there will be a new winner crowned this year as he was the last former winner remaining.

The remaining players return Saturday at 11 a.m. for Day 5, where they will play up to six levels. Coverage can be found here on PokerNews, with delayed streaming on ESPN2 up until 1 p.m.

Hallaert's Stack Keeps Growing

There was a raise to 33,000 from middle position and Kenny Hallaert called from the hijack. The button re-raised to 90,000 and the initial laid his hand down. Hallaert called to go heads-up to the flop of {9-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}.

Hallaert checked the flop and his opponent bet 160,000. Hallaert proceeded to raise all-in, having his opponent covered. His opponent made the call for his remaining 650,000 and the cards were tabled. Hallaert showed {8-Spades}{8-Clubs} and his opponent held a flush draw with {a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}.

The action was stopped for the TV crews to start filming, and when it was resumed, the {6-Clubs} fell on the turn and the {5-Spades} on the river. Hallaert held on to eliminate his opponent and boost himself to one of the largest stacks in the room.

Salas Adds Another Mill

A player in the hijack bet 60,000 on a {5-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} flop, and another player called from the button. Damian Salas made it 208,000 to go in the big blind, and only the player on the button called. Salas bet 201,000 more on the {5-Spades} turn and received another call. On the {q-Hearts} river, Salas thought a few minutes until his opponent called the clock on him.

Informed he had 30 seconds, Salas bet 464,000 in short order. His opponent flicked in an immediate call, and Salas showed {7-Hearts}{7-Spades} for a board.

"Wow," the other player said, mucking {a-Hearts}{6-Hearts} face up. "I'd have called if you went all in."

Player Interview: Randy Pisane

Nível 20 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Randy Pisane
Randy Pisane

Randy Pisane, a self-described hardcore student of the game, started Day 4 with 600,000 and a guaranteed cash in the Main Event.

Pisane started playing poker in the early nineties and paid the hefty price to learn the game from some of the best in the most famous underground poker clubs in New York, the Diamond Club and The Mayfair.

As players were leaving for dinner and their last break of the day, Pisane graciously agreed to talk to PokerNews about his incredible run up to 2.5 million in chips in just four levels of play.

Pisane: I had some of those standard double up spots of kings versus queens and catching cards at the right time. I may have had some good cards, but I also made some good moves at the right time. I even put my tournament life on the line a couple of times on bluffs that thankfully worked out.

PokerNews: You've been at this table all day. What's it like to go from the hunted to the hunter?

Pisane: I'm getting respect, but I'm not overly aggressive. I've been making good plays and value bets when appropriate. I have some good reads on players that I know will pay off and I know the people to stay away from. There are definitely some bad players at my table right now, and they're definitely some good players, and I'm able to recognize who's who.

PokerNews: Watching you interact with the players, it seems that you are as much of a poker fan as a player. Is that fair?

Pisane: Oh yeah. I'm a big fan and want to keep learning. I read a lot and watch a lot of people on YouTube, so I can learn. I'm a big fan of Doug Polk - he's one of my inspirations. I'm definitely a big fan of his.

PokerNews: The last time you played a WSOP event was in 2011. For a student and the fan of the game, why the long hiatus?

Pisane: It's a big commitment. I've had a full-time job; I was doing institutional fixed income sales for 26 years. Last July, right before the World Series I decided to take a break. And my friend begged me to play. But I just walked away from my job, and I needed a break. If Rob didn't put the money up, I'm not sure I would be here this year. He really pushed me, and my girlfriend also bought 5%. It's because of them that I'm here. I couldn't say no.

PokerNews: How does it feel to be near the top of the chip counts towards the end of Day 4 of The Main Event?

Pisane: It feels great. It's been a great day. I feel pretty good about how I'm playing. I've made some good reads on people. I've definitely caught some good cards, but I'll tell you up until today, I was only dealt aces once, and I lost with them. Today, the run of cards has been a little bit better.

Damian Salas Scoops Monster Pot to Vault into Chiplead

Nível 20 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Damian Salas
Damian Salas

Damian Salas raised to 35,000 from under the gun. A player in middle position called before Dilovan Hussein three-bet to 170,000 from the small blind. Salas called and the third player in the hand folded.

The flop came {9-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}. Hussein checked to Salas who bet 110,000. Hussein snap-called.

The turn was the {8-Clubs} and Hussein checked again. This time Salas bet 158,000. Again, Hussein called almost instantly.

The river was the {8-Spades}. Hussein checked a third time. Salas took his time and compiled a pretty hefty bet of 442,000. Hussein called quickly.

Salas showed {5-Spades}{5-Clubs} for a flopped set and rivered full house and Hussein flashed {k-Spades}{k-Clubs} for just an overpair.

"How do you call 170,000 preflop with that?" asked Hussein. "Why not fold?"

Five-Minute Tank Ends With Rypulak Calling Been's Massive Bet

Mateusz Rypulak bet 95,000 in the small blind on an {a-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{3-Hearts} flop, and Aaron Been called from middle position. Rypulak checked the {4-Diamonds} turn and called a bet of 175,000 from Been. On the {q-Spades} river, Rypulak checked a final time. Been slid in a bet of 700,000, leaving 61,000 back.

At this, Rypulak went deep into the tank. He shifted in his seat multiple times, taking a few deep breaths and studying Been. After about five minutes, someone called the clock. With less than 20 seconds remaining before his hand was dead, Rypulak dropped in a call. Been flipped over {a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds} for aces up and Rypulak shook his head repeatedly and mucked.

Liv Boeree Makes an Insane Laydown

Liv Boeree

On a turn of {8-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}{10-Spades}, Kevin Song checked to Liv Boeree who bet 110,000. James Salmon and Kevin Song called.

The river was the {k-Diamonds}. Song and Boeree checked to Salmon who moved all in for around 350,000. Song then called and Boeree looked conflicted and tanked for a long time.

She appeared to be muttering the action of the hand over and over to herself, gesturing to one stack then the other, gesturing to the size of the pot. Eventually, and in full face of the cameras, she folded.

Song showed {k-}{q-} for trip kings, while Salmon showed {8-}{8-} for a full house. Boeree, whose cards had been put to one side for use on future TV coverage, reached forward to show {2-}{2-} for a smaller full house.

"I didn't know what would have made me feel worse," said Boeree. "If I make the correct lay down I am still losing a two-million-chip pot.

"I'm happy I made the correct decision."

Tough Spot for Saliba, Balsiger Benefits

Nível 19 : 6,000/12,000, 2,000 ante
Jacob Balsiger
Jacob Balsiger

Vivian Saliba bet 150,000 on the river of a {5-}{5-}{2-}{j-}{3-} board and Jake Balsiger check-raised all-in for 446,000.

Saliba went into the tank, only having about 515,000 herself. Several moments went by and eventually, Saliba tossed in a calling chip.

Balsiger tabled {j-Diamonds}{j-Spades} for a full house, besting Saliba's {5-Clubs}{6-Clubs} and the former November Niner doubled, leaving Saliba with crumbs.

Player Interview: Eugene Kotlyarevskiy

Nível 18 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Eugene Kotlyarevskiy
Eugene Kotlyarevskiy

Eugene Kotlyarevskiy is sitting second in chips heading back from the second break of the day. The East Coast grinder started the day with 971,000 and now sports a healthy 2.4 million to play with.

He is already guaranteed a payout of just a few thousand less than his biggest cash to date, which he earned in last year's Main Event when he placed 278th for $36,708.

PokerNews spoke with Kotlyarevskiy to find out how play's been and to learn his strategy for the rest of the day.

Kotlyarevskiy: I won most of my chips from two big hands. The quads over quads hand and then a very friendly runout when I had ace-queen against aces. Then I've been playing small pots ever since to chip up.

PokerNews: Have you been able to get full value from being the chip leader at your table?

Kotlyarevskiy: My table is pretty solid. I think everybody left is a pretty confident player. Hopefully, I can use my stack. We'll see. I'm sort of waiting for the blinds to get bigger.

PokerNews: How would you rate the play today?

Kotlyarevskiy: Play today is significantly faster. That's about it. There were so many short stacks coming in that it just seems like there were a lot of people sticking it in. I mean, we lost about 400 people already today.

PokerNews: What's you plan for the rest of Day 4?

Kotlyarevskiy: Look, I have 200 big blinds, I don't want to do anything stupid. I'm going to keep it on cruise control for now and see what happens.

The Craft of Hitting

Nick Petrangelo
Nick Petrangelo

Action folded to Nick Petrangelo in the hijack and the high stakes tournament regular opened to 20,000. His neighbor, Stoyan Obreshkov in the cutoff, three-bet to 53,000. Mickey Craft in the small blind called rather quickly, and the big blind gave up. Petrangelo four-bet to 160,000 and Obreshkov gave up. Craft snap-called to get to see a flop.

The flop came {Q-Clubs}{10-Spades}{J-Spades} and Craft checked. Petrangelo had 235,000 behind and moved all in. Craft once again snap-called.

Petrangelo: {A-Diamonds}{A-Spades}
Craft: {K-Spades}{6-Spades}

The {3-Spades} hit the turn giving Craft the flush. Petrangelo came up short with the {4-Clubs} on the river and made his exit. Craft is up to 3.4 million, making him the massive chipleader of the tournament.
