Mark Roland Rolls on Day 1 as 61 Advance in $1,500 Triple Draw

It was a fast-paced, busy day on Day 1 of Event #28: $1,500 Limit 2-7 Lowball Triple Draw as 61 players advanced from a field of 326 runners, putting the event relatively close to the money with 49 places paid out.

The player with the best chance of locking up that money, at least as far as chip stack goes, is Mark Roland. The East Coast mixed game player managed to run his 7,500 starting stack up to 116,600 by day's end, making him the leader by far of the remaining runners. Jordan Siegel sits in second with 104,100.

Roland faced off with a number of tough players, but even the likes of Justin Bonomo, Shaun Deeb, Sylvain Loosli and Chris Tryba couldn't slow him down as he rolled through the field in seemingly unstoppable fashion on Day 1. Roland had a stack of at least 50 bets from the middle of the day on.

After the third break of the day, registration closed. The winner of the event will get paid $109,967, and it will not be a repeat winner from 2016.

That's because Andrey Zaichenko, who won his first bracelet in this event last year, was among the players who busted out during the course of play. Other notable eliminations included John Monnette, Mike Leah, Berry Greenstein, Jason Mercier, Bonomo, Jesse Martin and Scott Clements.

Meanwhile, Brian Brubaker, Jon Turner, Yuval Bronshtein, Ian Johns, Rep Porter, Deeb and Rob Mizrachi all remain in the hunt with sizable stacks. Limits will be 1,200/2,400 when play resumes.

Day 2 gets going at 2 p.m. on Thursday, so come back to PokerNews to see how the first pure 2-7 triple draw event of the summer continues to develop.

Misread for Israelashvili, But He Wins Anyway

"You really want to know?" Roland Israelashvili asked his beleaguered opponents as he prepared to bust yet another foe. "Here."

He turned over his cards after patting on the end as the all-in player drew a final card: {7-}{5-}{3-}{2-}{2-}.

It took Israelashvili a moment before realizing in horror that he had a pair and not a wheel.

"I misread my hand!" he exclaimed.

His opponent, who had broken a queen-low, peeked at his card and found another queen, so Israelashvili won the pot anyway, much to the amusement of his tablemates.

Daniel Negreanu
Daniel Negreanu

Daniel Negreanu raised from the hijack, and Jon Turner called from the small blind.

Turner drew two, Negreanu drew one, and Turner check-called a bet.

Both drew one on the second draw, Turner checked, Negreanu bet his remaining 950, and Turner called.

Turner drew one, and Negreanu stood pat with {J-}{7-}{6-}{4-}{2-}. Turner showed the same {6-}{5-}{3-}{2-} as earlier but, again, failed to improve.

Andrey Zaichenko
Andrey Zaichenko

Andrey Zaichenko will not be repeating as champ. He just bet into two players after the second draw, and only Frank Athey, on the button, called. Zaichenko and Athey both patted, and Zaichenko checked the end. Athey bet, and Zaichenko called but could not beat {7-}{6-}{4-}{3-}{2-}, and he was left with just 2,150.

He busted in short order.

Greenstein Survives Against Three

Barry Greenstein
Barry Greenstein

Four players went to the first draw at Table 110, with the small blind taking one, Barry Greenstein two, the cutoff one, and Benny Glaser one. Greenstein, though, came out betting, and everyone called. On the next draw, everyone took one except Greenstein who was pat. Greenstein put in his last 250, was called twice, and then the small blind woke up with a check-raise. Both the cutoff and Glaser called.

On the last draw, everyone was pat but Glaser, who took a card. He bet when checked to, and he got two calls. His {8-}{6-}{5-}{4-}{2-} was a winner for the side pot, but Greenstein took the main with {7-}{6-}{5-}{3-}{2-}.

Big Early Pot to Bonomo

Justin Bonomo, pictured in a different event.
Justin Bonomo, pictured in a different event.

Four players took two cards on the first draw, including big blind Justin Bonomo. Bonomo came out betting after the draw and everyone called. This time, Bonomo took one while his opponents all wanted two. Bonomo bet blind after the small blind checked, and a player in middle position raised. Bonomo called after the other two folded.

Bonomo took one and his opponent was pat. Bonomo bet out, though, only to get raised. Bonomo called and his opponent mucked, saying he had seen all four sevens and had a pair of them to finish. Bonomo showed {8-}{6-}{5-}{4-}{2-} for the win.
