Thomas Zanot Tops Day 1d of THE GIANT as 142 Survive

Thomas Zanot - Day 1d Chipleader
Thomas Zanot - Day 1d Chipleader

Thomas Zanot from the United States finished as the Day 1d chip leader of THE GIANT with 595,000. Just behind him were fellow Americans Andrew Crookston on 554,000 and Thomas Taylor on 495,000.

The fourth of five Day 1 flights of the inaugural $365 buy-in tournament attracted 1,581 entries, generating a prize pool of $474,300 with 238 places getting paid.

Once the unfortunate Justin Teng had burst the bubble, the festive Friday night mood saw a riot of gambling and wild all-in moves that saw the chip lead change hands many times. In the last few hands of the night, Thomas Zanot managed to grab the lead and hold it when the small blind shoved over 200,000 with ten-nine and Zanot in the big blind called with kings and faded a flopped straight draw.

Another remarkable moment happened just before the bubble burst as Benjamin Reinhart called a shove holding {a-Clubs}{9-Hearts} and was up against his opponent’s {10-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}. The board ran out {a-Spades}{10-Spades}{a-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{a-Hearts} with the room rushing over to photograph the quads over quads hand.

Other notables to make it through to Day 2 include Katie Lindsay (416,000), Abhishek Goindi from India (410,500), Ryan Riess (332,500) and Audley Harrison (273,000).

At the end of 18 levels of play approaching 2 a.m. there were 142 who had chips in front of them. Each will play Day 2 with the survivors of the other flights on Saturday, July 8.

There is one more Day 1 flight on Friday, July 7 at 7 p.m. The PokerNews live reporting team will be on hand again to bring you all the action.
