Life Outside Poker: Norman Chad – From Newsrooms to WSOP Fame

Life Outside Poker is a new podcast for PokerNews hosted by Connor Richards that seeks to pull back the curtain on poker players and allow viewers and listeners to get to know them on a personal level.

In the seventh episode, Connor speaks with World Series of Poker (WSOP) commentator Norman Chad, one of the most recognizable voices in poker who has provided color commentary on poker's biggest stage for over 20 years.

Chad talks about getting his start as a sports writer in college, his decades-long syndicated sports humor column for the Washington Post and being asked to commentate on the 2003 WSOP Main Event that sparked the Poker Boom.

Chad also discusses the state of poker broadcasting today, the need for more color commentary in the booth, and the need for more interesting characters on the felt.

With the betting lead, Daniel Mayoh fired on fifth and sixth streets and was called on both occasions by Chad Eveslage.

On seventh, Mayoh fired once more but this time Eveslage raised. Mayoh checked his cards and considered it for quite a while before he decided to lay it down.

Ruben slowed down and checked seventh street before calling a bet from Punsri. Punsri tabled K♥K♦7♠ for kings and sevens, but lost against Ruben's K♠10♠2♠ for kings and tens.

Daniel Mayoh brought in with a deuce before Mike Lang completed with a jack. Chad Eveslage came along with a four up, and Mayoh called as well.

The action then checked to Lang on fourth street, and he tossed in a bet, receiving two calls.

Eveslage paired his door card on fifth street and decided to lead out, causing Mayoh to fold and Lang to call. Lang also called a bet on sixth street before Eveslage bet again on seventh street.

This time, Lang tossed out a raise. Eveslage quickly called and Lang tabled 10♣9♦8♥ for a straight to the queen. Eveslage let out an expletive before mucking his cards and paying the extra bet he owed.

"Call in the dark. I have kings in the hole," Denzik said as she called even before looking at her last card. She showed K♦K♥ for two pair and Volpe mucked J♦J♠6♠ for a beaten queens and jacks.

"He's always trying to push me around. Obviously, I have kings," Denzik said as she stacked up the pot.

Helppi bet on fourth street and all four opponents called. Grapenthien opened the betting on fifth, Helppi raised, and Birman and Lazarou folded. Schulman called, but Grapenthien then reraised as both remaining opponents called.

Grapenthien and Schulman got the rest of their chips in on sixth as Helppi called to put both of them at risk. Schulman turned over A♦J♦ for a pair of aces, while Helppi showed Q♦J♥8♦ for two pair. Grapenthien had K♠K♥4♠ for kings and deuces as he took the pot to more than triple up, while Schulman was eliminated.
