Day 1b of the 2023 WSOP Main Event Kicks Off at Noon

Welcome to Day 1b of Event #76: $10,000 WSOP Main Event No-Limit Hold’em World Championship at the 2023 World Series of Poker. Cards go in the air at 12 p.m. local time for the second of four opening flights at Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas.

Day 1a drew more than 1,000 players to the first flight, up from the 896 that turned out for the opening day of the 2022 Main Event. A total of 810 players bagged after five levels of play and they will all return on Friday for Day 2abc.

Records have fallen all summer long and many expect this year’s Main Event to be no exception. All eyes will be on the field size over the next three days to see if the 2006 record of 8,773 players will finally be eclipsed. Last year’s tilt drew 8,663 players and Espen Jorstad took home $10,000,000 for winning the world championship.

Israel’s Yehuda Dayan bagged the chip lead on Day 1a, but Doug Polk is lurking close behind after he bagged the fourth-largest stack of the day. Other returning notables include Faraz Jaka, David Moses, Bin Weng, John Hennigan, and 2006 Main Event Champion Jamie Gold. Gold had the honor of giving the “Shuffle Up and Deal” order at the beginning of the day and he got off to a quick start to bag just over 160,000.

Players will begin with 60,000 in chips and each of the opening flights will play five 120-minute levels before the remaining players bag up for their respective Day 2. Breaks are scheduled after each level and a 75-minute dinner break will be taken after Level 3. Surviving players from Day 1b will combine with those from 1a and 1c on Friday, July 7.

Registration remains open through the first two levels of Day 2 and no reentries are available for this freezeout event. The tournament will stretch over two weeks and the final day of play is scheduled for Monday, July 17.

Kabrhel Pushing the Action Early

There was a raise under the gun to 700 and action folded to polarizing character Martin Kabrhel on the button.

"We agreed 1,000 minimum on the raise, yes?" Martin told the raiser. "We make rules and you break them."

Martin then immediately raised to 4,000. The early position raiser thought for a moment and laid down his hand.

What happened? Did I win?" Martin asked as he dragged the pot.

It's going to be a long day for the surrounding tables in Horseshoe Gold.

Normand Spends the First Hand in the Blender

The action folded around to the small blind who limped in and Frederic Normand raised to 800 in the big blind. His opponent called and the flop came Q♥J♥7♥. The small blind checked to Normand who bet 400 and his opponent called.

The turn brought the 4♠ and the small blind checked again. Normand sized up a bet of 1,600 this time and his opponent still called. The river was the 10♠ and the small blind instantly led out with a bet of 3,000. Normand went into the tank for well over three minutes on the first hand.

"Sorry guys," he said after a couple of minutes which got some chuckles from the table. Normand eventually called and his opponent showed K♥ for a missed flush draw while Normand held 4♣4♦ for a set of fours.

Small Swings for Petit

Rosalie Petit played two hands in a small span of time against the same opponent.

In the first hand, the pot amounted to 10,000 on a completed board of [8djskh9sh3h]. Petit led for 6,000 from the big blind and the player in the cutoff called.

Petit tabled Q♠10♦ and the straight was good for the win.

A few hands later, Petit was sitting in early position and her nemesis was on the button. This time, the pot totaled 12,000 and Petit checked.

The button bet 9,000 on a completed board of 3♠A♠7♠Q♠7♦ and Petit mulled it over before eventually folding.

Werner Gets Caught

On the turn of J♥6♥5♦3♥, Haven Werner led for 3,500 into her two opponents and only Patrick McDaniel made the call next to act.

The 8♣ fell on the river and Werner fired another bet of 6,000 and McDaniel snap-called. Werner tabled A♥K♠ for ace-high and McDaniel dragged the pot with J♠3♣ for two pair.

Koon Runs into Full House

The turn read Q♣J♦10♥3♣ and Bogdan Tudor checked to Jason Koon who put out a pot-sized bet of 8,000. Tudor went into the tank for about 30 seconds before making the call.

The 10♠ paired the board on the river and Tudor checked. Koon said, "That wasn't the one I was looking for," before checking back himself.

Tudor gave Koon a look to open first and Koon said, "That's not how this works."

Turdor opened J♣J♠ for a full house and Koon mucked his hand, while claiming to have missed the nut flush draw.

King-High Call Down

Action made it to Paul Serrate in early position who opened to 600. The hijack called and the small blind called.

The 3♥8♠3♠ flop hit the felt and action checked to the hijack who put out a bet of 1,500. The small blind folded but Serrate called.

Action checked through on the 5♦ turn and the 8♦ landed on the river. Serrate checked again and the hijack player put out a sizable bet of 5,400.

Serrate only went into the tank for a moment before he called. The other player didn't show after Serrate tabled K♠Q♠ for just king-high and scooped the pot.

2004 Main Event Champion Raymer Takes Down Four-Bet Pot

A player opened to 600 in early position and the cutoff three-bet to 1,700. The 2004 Main Event Champion Greg Raymer, who defeated a field of 2,576 to earn $5,000,000, was on the button and put in the four-bet to 5,000. The original raiser folded and the cutoff made the call.

When the 9♦5♣3♠ flop hit the felt, the cutoff quickly check-folded to a continuation bet of 4,000, sending the pot to Raymer.

Fast Off to a Fast Start

Dietrich Fast has been active in the early going, collecting quite a few chips in the first level of the day. He was back at it again with a completed board of 10♣9♠2♣3♥8♣ and around 15,000 in the middle.

The cutoff led out with a bet of 5,600 and Fast raised to 30,600 on the button. His opponent thought for a minute before flicking in a call. Fast flipped over A♣J♣ for the nut flush and his opponent showed Q♥J♠ for only a straight.

Kabrhel Overbets Turn and Bombs River

Action was picked up with Martin Kabrhel betting 10,000 into a pot of about 6,000 on a board of 10♦8♠2♦J♣ from the hijack. The button tanked for a moment before putting in the call.

The river brought a J♠ and Kabrhel went into the tank for over two minutes before putting out a green 25k chip and announcing "Nineteen thousand six hundred."

The button thought it over for a long time before eventually laying it down.

"I never bluff. I play safe poker. I would never bluff on Day 1. Wait 'til Day 4 and bluff my stack." Martin said as he dragged the pot. "I had the nuts, Jack-ten" he remarked, but no one will ever know.
