Mercier responded by pushing a bet of 15,500 into the middle. Fields took a significant amount of time before making the call to send the two players to the river.
The 9♦ river saw Fields check once more. Mercier was not willing to go to a cheap showdown just yet, instead firing off 28,000. That bet sent Fields deep into the tank as he counted out his stack while sizing up his opponent. Eventually he committed calling chips but mucked with visible frustration as Mercier turned over A♥A♦ for the overpair.
