Welcome Back for Day 2 of Event #40: $250,000 Super High Roller
There was no shortage of eyes surrounding the best players in the world on Day 1, and that should only amplify on Day 2 when the scene is moved to the bright lights of the main stage at the Horseshoe Las Vegas. Welcome back for Day 2 of Event #40: $250,000 Super High Roller, the largest buy-in event of the 2023 World Series of Poker.
It was another larger-than-expected field for this buy-in level that saw a total of 56 entries recorded on Day 1, generating a prize pool of $13,944,000, with time still to grow. After eight levels were completed on the opening day, only 37 players managed to advance to Day 2 thus far. It was a surprise chip leader when the dust settled as Dustin Bailey accumulated a stack of 4,850,000 chips while battling with the best players in the world.
Bailey was seated next to Phil Ivey throughout the entire day which also drew a lot of eyes to the table. Ivey survived through the eight levels but will be returning to a sub-average stack of 1,235,000. The businessman was also engaged with the other big stack in the tournament, Chance Kornuth, as the two traded some friendly banter throughout. Kornuth held the chip lead throughout much of the day, but was dethroned late and will return with a stack of 4,340,000.
The structure of the event allows for plenty of opportunities for the short stacks to make their way back into contention. A starting stack is still worth 50 big blinds to start Day 2 and the average stack is over 70 big blinds. Late registration will remain open until the start of Day 2 which begins at 1 p.m. PST. The blinds will be resuming on level nine at 15,000/30,000 and a 30,000 big blind ante.
The schedule indicates that a total of 10 levels will be played today with a 15-minute break after every two levels and a 60-minute dinner break after level 14. However, that is always TBD based on the pace of play of the tournament.

Jason Koon's Stack Pulled from WSOP $250K Super High Roller as Wife Enters Labor

Even though Jason Koon bagged Day 1 of Event #40: $250,000 Super High Roller at the 2023 World Series of Poker (WSOP), he will not be joining the other High Rollers for Day 2. The high-stakes star had his stack pulled from the largest buy-in event of the summer after he received word that his wife was in labor with their second child just in time for Father's Day.
Koon, who bagged a stack of 1,740,000 — a little more than the starting stack of 1,500,000 — will be fully refunded for his $250,000 entry, according to WSOP officials.
"Prior to the end of registration in event 40 with more than a starting stack, entrant Jason Koon requested a void and refund so as to accompany his wife to the hospital who had gone into labor," WSOP told PokerNews. "Request was granted. Issuing a refund before the end of registration is clearly within the discretion of tournament officials and common practice at WSOP. We wish Jason Koon and all our WSOP dads a happy Father's Day."

James Chen raised to 60,000 from early position and was three-bet to 165,000 by Jans Arends in the big blind. Chen responded with a four-bet to 425,000 and Arends moved all in, with Chen making the quick call.

The monotone flop of 10♣8♣J♣ put Arends in the danger zone as Chen could improve to the winner with any club or queen and would get there on the runout of 6♠4♣, making an ace-high flush and sending Arends home early.

Martin Kabrhel opened to 75,000 in early position and was called by Jonathan Jaffe in the hijack. The flop came Q♣J♣4♦ and Kabrhel continued with a bet of 65,000 which Jaffe called.
The turn brought the 5♦ and both players checked to the J♥ on the river. Kabrhel slid out a bet of 120,000 on the river and Jaffe looked him up. Kabrhel tabled K♥10♥ for a missed straight draw while Jaffe held 9♥9♣ for the lone pair.

Aldemir Sends Bonomo to the Rail

Koray Aldemir and Justin Bonomo were heads-up in a pot with around 700,000 in the middle going to the flop. The dealer fanned the flop of K♣6♠4♣ and Bonomo checked from the big blind. Aldemir tossed in a bet of 290,000 in middle position and Bonomo called.
The turn was the 7♥ and Bonomo checked again. Aldemir announced a bet of 750,000 this time and Bonomo used two time banks before moving all in for around 2,240,000. Aldemir shrugged as he dropped in the call and the cards were tabled.

Aldemir was ahead with his pair of kings but Bonomo had outs with a pair and a straight draw. The A♠ hit the river and Aldemir's hand held up to eliminate Bonomo in the largest pot of the tournament thus far.
