Rast & "Pads" Among Big Stacks in Day 2 of $10,000 Dealer’s Choice Championship

Brian Rast

After a fast-paced Day 1 that debuted a new structure for the 2023 World Series of Poker Championship Events, Event #10: $10,000 Dealer's Choice Championship will pick back up today with Day 2 kicking off at 1 p.m. local time.

Leading the star-studded 58 players who bagged Day 1 is six-time bracelet winner John Hennigan with a stack of 309,500, while fellow big stacks Marco Johnson (297,500) and David "The Gunslinger" Bach (273,000) are respectively after their third and fourth bracelets.

Other notable players who ended Day 1 with a top ten stack include five-time bracelet winner Brian Rast, the popular Patrick "Pads" Leonard (who won a bracelet in the 2022 Tag Team event) and three-time bracelet winner David "Bakes" Baker.

Those are hardly the only poker stars who will be on the Day 2 felt as Poker Hall of Famers Daniel Negreanu and Erik Seidel bagged middling stacks, while the always-positive Phil Hellmuth will look to spin up his stack of 9,000 into a record-extending 17th bracelet.

Defending champion Ben Diebold and runner-up Mike Gorodinsky are both in contention, while Adam Friedman, who famously won this event three consecutive years from 2018 to 2021, won't be made a four-time Dealer's Choice champion this time around as he fell on Day 1.

We may see a few more notables hop into the field as late registration remains open until the start of play on Day 2.

The plan is to play seven 90-minute levels with a 15-minute break after every level and a 60-minute dinner break after Level 14, which is expected to wrap up at approximately 7:40 p.m. Day 3's restart time has yet to be determined and will play down to a winner as it follows a similar structure to Day 2.

Stay tuned as the PokerNews live reporting team is here at Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas and will provide updates before the next Dealer's Choice champion is crowned.

Big O

Three ways to the A74 flop, Zachary Freeman bet 20,000 out of the big blind. Eric Persson in the cutoff folded while Anatolii Zyrin called on the button. Freeman then bet the 9 turn for 70,000 to receive a call and jammed the 8 river. Zyrin shrugged and called with the superior stack.

Zachary Freeman: A6432
Anatolii Zyrin: AQ532

Freeman had two pair to go with his nut low and earned three quarters of the pot while Zyrin took a big hit right away.

Badacey

Phil Hellmuth chose for the table to play Badacey and called from the small blind when Sampo Ryynanen raised from the cutoff. Benny Glaser also came along from the big blind. Hellmuth drew two as Glaser drew three and Ryynanen drew one.

Hellmuth and Glaser checked after the first draw and Ryynanen bet 4,000. Hellmuth check-raised to 8,000 and Glaser folded before Ryynanen called. Hellmuth drew one and Ryynanen stood pat.

After the second draw, Hellmuth bet and was raised by Ryynanen, who again stood pat as Hellmuth called and drew one.

After the last draw, Hellmuth checked and called a final bet from his opponent, who tabled 7/543A for a seven low and a five badugi.

"Wow, nice hand," Hellmuth said as he folded. "That time I was drawing dead against you."

Negreanu No Mor

Big O

On a three-way flop of A105, Daniel Negreanu was all-in for the last 5,000 out of the small blind and Ajay Gnanasambanthan called from the big blind. Ofir Mor then raised in the cutoff and isolated successfully.

Daniel Negreanu: AQ852
Ofir Mor: 105432

Mor admitted that he had a "pretty bad hand" but his inferior two pair and wheel draw was alive. The K turn gave Mor a flush draw and he got there with the 8 river to scoop the entire pot.

Negreanu joked "good for you, Ofir ... onto the next one," he concluded. Moments after he left the tournament area, the cash game floor in the Paris Ballroom called for "Daniel for one, three".

Robl Doubles Through Katz With Aces Full

Nível 11
Andrew Robl
Andrew Robl

Omaha 8 or Better

Cary Katz opened to 8,000 on the button and Andrew Robl three-bet to 12,000 in the small blind with just two bets behind. Katz called.

Robl bet on the 4QA flop and Katz called. Robl then moved all in for 3,000 on the 8 turn and Katz confirmed the amount before calling.

"That's a good sign, right?" Katz said as he made the reluctant call.

Andrew Robl: AK104
Cary Katz: KJ87

Robl was ahead with aces and fours while Katz had flush and Broadway draws. The A river gave Katz a flush but also gave Robl a full house as he scooped the pot to double up.

"Aces full? What, are we playing online?" asked Katz. You always hit the perfect card."

"That's my specialty," replied Robl.

Hellmuth Out; Claassen Left Short

Nível 12
Phil Hellmuth

In two different 2-7 variants, the stacks of Phil Hellmuth and Christopher Claassen were decimated while Sampo Ryynanen as well as Frank Crivello chipped up.

Hellmuth was not amused when Ryynanen got there with the 8x7x5x4x3x and mucked his cards with force in the next hand.

"You got the raise ready, so I know you got four good cards," he gasped in table chat.

Pot-Limit 2-7 Triple Draw

Claassen clashed with Crivello when he bet 20,000 and called a raise to 50,000 after the second draw. Both then patted the final draw and Crivello moved all-in after, which Claassen called. Crivello tabled the 7x6x5x3x2x and Claassen mucked the 8x6x4x3x2x.

Benny Glaser was knocked out shortly after before Hellmuth then also lost the remainder of his short stack as well to leave the table four-handed.

Katz Eliminated by Hennigan

Nível 12

No-Limit Hold'em

Cary Katz never got much going despite entering the day with an above-average stack. Just before his table broke, Katz was all-in preflop with the AK and John Hennigan looked him up with the inferior AJ.

However, Hennigan paired his weaker kicker on the J10767 runout and that spelled the end for Katz.

Eveslage Loses a Pot

No-Limit Hold'em

Andrew Robl raised from the small blind and Chad Eveslage defended out of the big blind.

Robl checked on the flop of 1053 and Eveslage bet 9,000. Robl called. Robl checked again on the 8 turn and Eveslage bet 28,000. Robl eyed his opponent down and crossed his arms as he considered his action. He took another peek at his cards and called.

Robl checked a third time on the 3 river and Eveslage checked back. Robl tabled J10 for a pair of tens and Eveslage folded what he said was ten-seven to earn Robl the pot as those at the table needled Eveslage about his recent heater.

"He finally lost a pot!" said Mike Gorodinsky.

"A moment of silence, please," added Jordan Siegel.

Gorodinsky Busts Wells, Gets Info from Robl

Big O

Robert Wells opened to 10,500 on the button and Mike Gorodinsky defended his big blind. Gorodinsky then led out on the flop of 102J and Wells called off for his tournament life.

Robert Wells: AAQ75
Mike Gorodinsky: 1010543

Gorodinsky had taken the lead with a set and the runout of JK improved him to a full house to mark the elimination of Wells.

"You crack aces with that hand?" laughed Chad Eveslage.

After the hand, it was Gorodinsky's turn to choose a game and he attempted to get some information out of his table mates before making a decision.

"Andrew, do you play any stud games?" he asked Andrew Robl as the table broke into laughter.

"No comment," said Robl.

Gorodinsky, who chose Stud 8 or Better, went on to compliment Robl's play during PokerGO's No Gamble No Future $1 million buy-in cash game earlier this year where he profited $1.8 million.

"Everything went my way that day," reflected Robl.
