Stephen Song Tops The Charts in the $1,000 Pot-Limit Omaha 8-Handed Event

Nível 17 : 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante
Stephen Song

Day 1 of Event #30: $1,000 Pot-Limit Omaha 8-Handed, part of the exciting 2022 World Series of Poker at Bally's and Paris Las Vegas, saw an incredible turnout. Some 1,891 players bought in, over 800 more than the 2021 edition of this event, yet only 108 had chips in front of them after the completion of the 17th level.

Stephen Song, who won a bracelet in a $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em event in 2019, bagged up a tournament-leading stack of 1,404,000 chips when time was called on the day's action. Song rode his luck during the opening day's action, including cracking aces twice with a heart flush.

Pedro Arroyos returns on Day 2 with 1,365,000 chips, enough for second place at the restart. Arroyos was involved in a monster hand late into proceedings, one that sent three players to the rail at once.

William Kopp (1,163,000) and Chino Rheem (1,100,000) were the other two players who had the welcomed problem of having to fit seven figures worth of chips into their overnight chip bag.

Plenty of stellar names find themselves in the mix going into Day 2. Dylan Weisman (623,000), Anthony Denove (460,000), Maurice Hawkins (422,000), Ryan Laplante (378,000), James Dempsey (292,000), Barny Boatman (263,000), Kevin MacPhee (234,000), and Bruno Fitoussi (216,000), are still in with a shot at becoming this tournament's champion.

Each of the returning 108 players are guaranteed to take home at least $2,419 for the efforts after the bubble burst on Day 1.

Such luminaries as John Kabbaj, Ryan Riess, Calvin Anderson, Tony Cousineau, Martin Finger, Joshua Field, and Daniel Zack all reached the money places but could not make it through to the conclusion of Day 1.

Play resumes at noon local time on Wednesday, June 15, at Bally's. The players come back to blinds of 5,000/10,000 and the plan is to play down to the final five players. Make sure you tune into PokerNews on June 15 as we bring you all the action, as it happens, from the $1,000 Pot-Limit Omaha 8-Handed event, in addition to coverage of every bracelet-awarding tournament at the 2022 World Series of Poker.

Arroyos Says Adios To Four Players In Two Hands

Nível 17 : 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante
Pete Arroyos
Pete Arroyos

The early position player bet 21,000 and was called by middle position and the cut-off. Pedro Arroyos bet 121,000 and was only called by the cutoff. The flop came {k-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{7-Spades} Arroyos bet enough to put his opponent all-in and the cutoff called.

Cutoff: {10-Clubs}{9-Spades}{6-Spades}{3-Clubs}
Pedro Arroyos: {a-Clubs}{a-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}

The cutoff was behind to Arroyos's aces but had a flush draw and backdoor opportunities. The {7-Clubs} turn improved Arroyos to trip sevens and the {4-Diamonds} was a brick and "Big Pete" was awarded the pot.

The very next hand, four players had their chips in the middle, including Arroyos in the big blind who covered the three players, which were the button (35,000), middle position (135,000), and early position (160,000)

Button: {k-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}{j-Spades}{4-Diamonds}
Middle Position: {q-Clubs}{10-Spades}{9-Hearts}{7-Spades}
Early Position: {a-Hearts}{a-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}
Pedro Arroyos: {q-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{5-Hearts}

The early position player was ahead with pocket aces, but the flop of {9-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{3-Clubs} gave Arroyos the lead with two pair. The {8-Hearts} on the turn was even sweeter for Arroyos who improved to a boat. The {9-Spades} river gave Arroyos a bigger boat and sealed the fate of his three opponents who head to the rail.

Song Soars Ahead

Nível 17 : 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante
Stephen Song
Stephen Song

Bracelet winner Stephen Song found himself in a pot holding {a-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{4-Spades} against a player who was sporting a very strong hand of {a-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}{k-Spades}{q-Spades} .

But on a board of {3-Spades}{j-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{k-Hearts}{5-Spades}, aces were no match for Song's ace-high flush, and Song, therefore, eliminated the player.

"I kind of feel bad I'm having fun at other peoples' expense," Song joked as he mentioned other hands where his unorthodox play was rewarded.

"That's the second time I cracked that guy's aces with hearts!" he laughed.

He is now the chip leader with 1,525,000 chips.

Double Up For Boatman

Nível 15 : 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Barny Boatman
Barny Boatman

Barny Boatman bet 17,000 from under the gun and was raised by the small blind for 57,000. Boatman made the call.

The flop came {k-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{5-Spades} and Boatman moved all-in for 144,000 and was snap-called by the small blind.

Barny Boatman: {8-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}
Small Blind: {a-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}{5-Hearts}

The small blind was ahead with kings and fives, but Boatman had a full wrap requiring any three, four, seven, eight, or nine to hit a straight. The {4-Diamonds} hit on the turn to give The Hendon Mobster a straight and the {q-Clubs} was no help to the small blind.

Bell Pulls Out in Front with Big Pot

Nível 15 : 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
David Bell
David Bell

The early position player raised preflop to 12,000, and the button and David Bell in the small blind called behind.

The flop was {9-Spades}{8-Clubs}{3-Spades} and this time Bell led out for 45,000, which the early position player called and the button folded.

On the {a-Clubs} turn, Bell led out again, this time for115,000, which sent his opponent deep into the tank. After what looked like a painful trip into his head, he finally called, leaving less than 100,000 behind.

That's when Bell slid out another 100,000 in the dark, leaving the decision up to his opponent as the {2-Clubs} came on the river.

The early position player then dramatically sent his hand into the muck.

Bell was pushed the huge pot and catupulted into a massive chip lead.

"You faded a lot, full wrap and flush draw," He told Bell, shaking his head.

Michael Moncek
Michael Moncek

PokerNews missed the hand, but the table filled us in on the action. After a cold four-bet from an earlier positioned player, Michael Moncek five-bet all in and was called.

Moncek had {a-Clubs}{q-Clubs}{q-}{10-} and his opponent had {a-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}.

The board came {q-}{7-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{6-} with every draw missed, and Moncek scooped a massive pot of over 200,000 with his top set of queens.

On a flop of {7-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}, Maurice Hawkins in the big blind called the all-in from the middle position player.

Maurice Hawkins: {j-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{3-Diamonds}
Middle Position: {k-}{k-}{8-}{8-}

The middle position player stood up and said "I guess it is rebuy time!" when Hawkins revealed he hit a set. The{j-Diamonds}{10-Spades} runout was no help for the middle position player and Hawkins stack smashes through the six-figure mark.

Courtney Kennedy
Courtney Kennedy

On a heads-up board of {a-Hearts}{9-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}, the action was checked through.

But on the {6-Hearts} river, Courtney Kennedy in early position led out for 7,000, which the other player called.

Kennedy tabled {a-}{9-}{4-}{10-} for top two pair, which was enough to make the other player muck, awarding her the pot.
