It is once again time for poker players and poker enthusiasts to rejoice following a prolonged wait. The 52nd annual World Series of Poker returns to the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino today with 88 live bracelet events on the schedule.

As in previous years, the 2021 WSOP kicks off with the Casino Employees Event, and all of the players in this event today will have a chance at winning WSOP gold bracelet; this special tournament features a buy-in of $500. In the most recent edition back in 2019, the tournament attracted 685 entrants who generated a $297,975 prize pool. On the third day of play, Aria poker dealer Nicholas Haynes defeated Isaac Hanson in heads-up play to win a WSOP gold bracelet and the $62,345 top prize.

The structure is similar to the most recent iteration of this tournament. Players will start with 25,000 in chips and will play for two days, with 40-minute blind levels starting at 100/100 with a 100 big blind ante.

The action is slated to get underway at 11 a.m. PST. Each player will be given the option of one re-entry during the late registration period of nine levels. During the first day, there will be a 20-minute break after every three levels and a 75-minute dinner break after level 9. A total of 17 levels are scheduled for Day 1, and a winner will be crowned on Day 2.

Jesse Fullen
Jesse Fullen

Facing a bet of 400 from the under-the-gun player, PokerNews' Jesse Fullen moved all-in from the big blind for his opponent's remaining 12,200 chips. The opponent called, and two players turned over their cards.

Fullen: {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds}
Opponent: {k-Clubs}{k-Spades}

It was the classic cooler of aces versus kings, and when the board ran out clean Fullen knocked out a player early on Day 1. Fullen is up to 41,800.

According to Mike Patrick, he bet 700 from middle position on a flop of {a-Spades}{9-Spades}{5-} and was met with a check-raise to 2,000 by the small blind, which he called.

The small blind bet again on the {10-Spades} turn, this time for 2,500, and Patrick raised to 9,000. His opponent moved all-in for his remaining 16,500 and Patrick called, showing {k-Spades}{j-Spades} for the turned nut flush.

The small blind showed {a-}{9-} for two pair and didn't improve on the river, sending the pot to Patrick. He has nearly doubled his starting stack to 46,000 here on Level 2.

Sean Balfour
Sean Balfour

According to players at the table, three players including Sean Balfour had gotten all their chips in the pot on a flop of {8-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{8-}. The hands were revealed.

Opponent 1: {a-Hearts}{5-Hearts}
Opponent 2: {j-Clubs}{j-Spades}
Sean Balfour: {9-Clubs}{8-Clubs}

A very attractive flop had shown up for Balfour, and although one opponent was drawing very slim, needing running aces or straight flush cards, he still had to fade a jack from his other opponent. The board ran out {q-} {3-} and Balfour scooped up the pot as two players were gone, leading Balfour to express his wishes of it being a knockout tournament.

Walker Goes Down in Cruel Fashion

Nível 8 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Jason Walker
Jason Walker

Jason Walker has been riding a big stack all day, but his tournament just came to a sudden end on the river.

On a {10-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{6-Spades} {q-Diamonds} board, Walker bet 5,000 from the small blind and was called by the under-the-gun player. Sheldon Akiyama in middle position raised to 25,000, and Walker moved all-in for 36,000 total.

After the original caller quickly folded, Akiyama went into the tank for several minutes before putting in the chips to call. Walker turned over {q-Clubs}{8-Clubs} for two pair while Akiyama had {a-Clubs}{q-Hearts} for a pair of queens.

Akiyama needed help and got it when the {a-Diamonds} fell on the river to give him a bigger two pair. The stacks were counted down, and when Akiyama was found to have Walker covered the one-time big stack made a quick walk to the exit.
