Baitai Li Dominates Day 1 of Event #48: $2,500 No-Limit Hold'em

Nível 10 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Baitai Li,
Baitai Li,

Event #48: $2,500 No-Limit Hold'em started down its four-day path to a winner today, attracting 996 entries. All are uniques; this tournament is an old-school freeze-out where deeper pockets prove no advantage. Many well-known players took the option to enter well after the starting whistle, including Phils Hellmuth and Ivey who came in just at the close of registration but could not spin their 15 big blind starting stacks into a Day 2 appearance.

The prize pool for this event is $2,241,000, from which the winner will receive $427,399 along with their 2019 WSOP bracelet. With 150 paid (a min-cash being worth $3,746), the bubble will come into focus quickly tomorrow as 201 players currently remain.

Leading the Day 1 survivors – by quite a margin – is Baitai Li with 354,800 chips. While the likes of Barny Boatman, Mark Radoja and Antal Mezei bagged stacks in the quarter of a million region, Li’s stack gives him 221 big blinds of maneuvering room while many will return short.

Also progressing to Day 2 are double bracelet winners Kristen Bicknell (129,500), Michael Addamo (108,300) and Humberto Brenes (26,500), while Martin Jacobson ends the day with 103,000. Of the finalists who took part in today’s $600 Mixed No-Limit Hold’em and Pot-Limit Omaha event, three jumped into Event #48 with little pause for breath – Rainer Kempe, Stephen Ma and Raghav Bansal. Bansal alone made it through Level 10, bagging 111,600 chips. Full chip counts will follow overnight.

Play resumes at 1pm; live coverage continues as the hunt for the next No Limit Hold’em bracelet whittles down a tough field over 10 one-hour levels.

Easy Go, Easy Come for Boatman

Nível 10 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Barny Boatman
Barny Boatman

Barny Boatman's table is winning the Late Night Chat award, with everyone getting involved in the penultimate level's banter. This doesn't seem to have distracted him from wielding his potentially field-leading stack in almost every other hand.

Boatman took a hit in what started off as a three-way pot to a {5-Clubs}{q-Clubs}{j-Spades} flop. Boatman, under the gun, checked, the middle position player checked and Patrick Ford bet 8,000 into a pot of about 15,000. Boatman alone made the call. On the {3-Hearts} turn, Boatman checked and Ford bet again, this time 13,000. Boatman counted out the call and tanked for a moderate amount of time before throwing it in.

The river: {j-Clubs}. Again, Boatman checked, and this time Ford checked behind, saying, "Aces," not as a question. He flipped the {a-Clubs}{a-Hearts}, Boatman said, "Good," and mucked.

The very next hand a short stack (whom according to the table chat everyone had been giving a lot of respect, despite his moving in repeatedly with on or under 10bb) shipped it preflop for 18,000. Eoghan O'Dea moved in over the top for about 10,000 more and again, action was on Boatman. He called the both of them.

Short stack: {7-Spades}{7-Hearts}
O'Dea: {a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}
Boatman: {q-}{q-}

The board ran out {8-Hearts}{10-Spades}{6-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{2-Diamonds} and Boatman knocked them both out, saying, "Turns out you can't keep a bad man down either."

Bicknell Check-Raises the River

Nível 8 : 400/800, 800 ante
Kristen Bicknell

Tony Dunst opened to 1,700 in middle position and was called by the hijack and Kristen Bicknell in the small blind. The flop came {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds}{9-Spades} and the action checked around to the {9-Diamonds} on the turn.

Bicknell led out for 3,000 and Dunst quickly folded. The hijack called and the {j-Clubs} landed on the river. Bicknell thought for a minute and then checked to her opponent who bet 2,000. Bicknell countered with a check-raise to 8,000 and her opponent sent his cards to the muck.

Yifrach Sends Sabat to the Rail

Nível 7 : 300/600, 600 ante
Gal Yifrach
Gal Yifrach

A board of {9-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{6-Hearts} was spread across the felt and Eddy Sabat was already all in. There was a side pot going on between Gal Yifrach and the player on his left. With around 12,000 in the main pot and 8,000 in the side pot, Yifrach already checked and his opponent finally checked as well just as the clock was called.

The river was the {3-Clubs} and both players quickly checked again. Yifrach turned over {j-Spades}{j-Diamonds} which was good enough to win the side pot against his opponent's {a-Clubs}{6-Clubs}. Sabat tabled {10-Spades}{10-Diamonds} which meant Yifrach collected the main pot as well.

"I didn't want to win this one anyway," Sabat said as he exited the tournament area.

Lynskey Short, But Avoids Disaster

Nível 6 : 300/500, 500 ante
Alex Lynskey
Alex Lynskey

There was a raise to 1,000 from early position and three players called, including Alex Lynskey in middle position. The flop came {6-Spades}{6-Hearts}{2-Hearts} and the action checked around to the {7-Spades} on the turn.

The big blind led out for 1,800 and all three players called. The river brought the {4-Clubs} and the action checked to the hijack. He moved all in for 7,000 which got the big blind and the preflop raiser to fold.

Lynskey took out his headphones and eyed up his opponent for a minute. "Quads?" he asked. Lynskey finally came to the decision to fold and good thing he did as his opponent showed {7-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} for a full house.

Hawkins Limps with Aces

Nível 5 : 200/400, 400 ante
Maurice Hawkins
Maurice Hawkins

Maurice Hawkins just got moved to a new table and he limped in from early position. Dylan Wilkerson moved all in for 6,000 in middle position and the action folded back to Hawkins who quickly called.

Maurice Hawkins: {a-Spades}{a-Clubs}
Dylan Wilkerson: {k-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}

The flop came {q-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{3-Hearts} and Wilkerson was left needed some runner-runner outs. The {j-Hearts} on the turn provided a small sweat but the {2-Clubs} on the river bricked off as he was sent to the rail.

Great Start for Berkey

Nível 2 : 100/200, 0 ante
Matt Berkey in a previous event
Matt Berkey in a previous event

Matt Berkey has split his time at the felt in the opening levels as two different tables and they both appear to be productive thus far. Starting the hand with over 30,000, Berkey called an under-the-gun raise of 700 from the big blind.

The flop came {9-Clubs}{8-Spades}{6-Hearts} and Berkey led out for 1,000. His opponent called and the {a-Clubs} landed on the turn. Berkey tossed in another bet of 2,000 and his opponent still called to see the {5-Spades} on the river.

Berkey fired a third bullet of 3,900 and his opponent looked him up. Berkey turned over {9-Hearts}{6-Diamonds} for two pair and his opponent conceded the pot.

Timur Margolin - 2018 $2,500 No-Limit Hold'em Winner
Timur Margolin - 2018 $2,500 No-Limit Hold'em Winner

While the World Series of Poker has put together an incredible 2019 schedule with brand new events and all different types of tournaments, now it is time for just some good old no-limit hold'em. Event #48: $2,500 No-Limit Hold'em kicks off today on the first of a four-day tournament that will see another WSOP gold bracelet awarded.

In 2018, Timur Margolin defeated a field of 1,248 players to capture his second WSOP bracelet and a payday of $507,274. Margolin already has three cashes this summer and will surely be back in a quest to add another to his resume. This tournament is sure to attract some of the bigger names around the game with a slightly higher buy-in and the only no-limit hold'em variation currently taking place on the schedule.

The action will get underway at 12 p.m. local time and each player will begin with 15,000 chips when they take to the felt. The blinds will start at 100/100 and the levels will be 60 minutes in length. There will be a 20-minute break after every two levels and a 75-minute dinner break after the sixth level today.

Late registration will remain open through the first eight levels until approximately 9:15 p.m. This tournament will not offer the option of any re-entries and will be the classic freezeout format. A total of 10 levels will be played today and the tournament will be split up into four days with the winner being crowned on Sunday, June 23.

Follow along with the PokerNews live reporting team for all of the live updates throughout the entire event.
