Loren Klein Wins 4th Bracelet in 4 Years; Claims $127,808 in Event #43: $2,500 Mixed Big Bet

Bill Boyd and Doyle Brunson had been the only players in World Series of Poker (WSOP) history who had won bracelets in four consecutive years. Loren Klein has now joined the two legends, adding number four to his résumé as he prevailed in the 2019 WSOP Event #43: $2,500 Mixed Big Bet.

Klein came back from the shortest stack at the final table to conquer a 218-entry contest for $127,808 and his fourth bracelet, following previous wins over the past three years.

While Boyd and Brunson accomplished their streaks back in the 1970s, Klein is the first player to make it four-in-a-row in the modern era with large attendances. The 218-entry field in the Mixed Big Bet is, in fact, the smallest player field among his triumphant runs.

That, however, didn't make it any easier for him. Sitting at the bottom of the standings ahead of the final day, Klein knew that the only way to bounce back would lead by risking elimination.

He made his first move only minutes into play, drawing with a one-pair hand against Phil Hui's two pair in no-limit five-card draw. Klein peeled a higher two pair, survived, and took off from there.

While Ryan Hughes held onto a commanding lead, Klein was the other star at the table. He kept grinding his stack up, assuring the remaining players that they couldn't dismiss his bid for the title. After all, he was the only one who had emerged victorious three times, more than any other player at the table.

But it was Hughes pulling the strings before the first break, magnetizing two-thirds of the chips in play with five players left. The first break, however, was a turning point. Even Hughes could suddenly be wounded, and Hui and Klein both bit into his stack.

The three started to profile as the contenders for the bracelet, and the eliminations of Joey Couden and Arthur Morris confirmed that it would be Hughes, Klein, and Hui who'd battle it out.

The chances were fairly even, but a key hand in pot-limit deuce propelled Klein to the chip lead. Hui was again on the unlucky side, having his pat nine outdrawn by Klein's one-card draw in a predraw all-in clash.

Hui soon busted to Hughes, paving the way for the heads-up match. Again, the chip-spread was relatively fair, and a reasonably deep-stacked play offered room for a potentially strenuous encounter.

There wouldn't be one, though as Klein showed a decisive dominance and dragged the majority of the pots, quickly seizing a 2-to-1 advantage.

The final strike came in pot-limit Omaha hi-lo, and Klein was as tough an opponent as anyone in the four-card flop game. He made a second-nut flush while Hughes held the nut blocker. Hughes showed multiple times during this tournament—and in many previous ones—that he isn't scared to put his chips into the middle, and he went for it. He raised all in, Klein picked him off, and that was it. Hughes had to settle for second place, just like he did in the same tournament in 2018.

This year's WSOP is virtually at its halfway point, so there are still dozens of bracelets up for grabs. While Klein has already met his yearly quota, he would undoubtedly prefer to snag his fifth by the end of the summer. Keep following the PokerNews live coverage to find out whether he'll double down or if he'll have to wait until 2020.

Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Lo

Ryan Hughes raised his button to 45,000, Loren Klein called and they checked the {10-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{k-Hearts} flop.

The {5-Clubs} turn filled the flush draw and Klein led out 100,000. Hughes called.

The {j-Spades} completed the board and Klein fired 250,000. Hughes didn't spend much time before announcing he was all in and Klein wasn't particularly happy to see that.

Nonetheless, Klein called within a few seconds. Hughes turned up {a-Clubs}{a-Spades}{j-Diamonds}{2-Hearts} for a nut blocker and Klein showed second nuts with {k-Clubs}{j-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{6-Hearts} to end the tournament.

Hughes repeated his runner-up finish from last year while Loren Klein walks away as a champion, winning his fourth career bracelet. Klein has been decorated every year since 2016, extending his streak to four consecutive years today.

Pot-Limit 2-7 Triple Draw

Phil Hui lost a big pot against Loren Klein and was left short and he just lost the remaining chips to Ryan Hughes. Hui got his chips in after the first draw.

Hughes stood pat while Hui drew one and they repeated on the third draw. Hughes showed {8-}{7-}{5-}{3-}{2-} and Hui tabled {8-}{4-}{3-}{2-} and he was drawing to a perfect eight.

His last card turned out to be the {q-} and Hui was eliminated in third, banking $51,346.

Pot-Limit 2-7 Triple Draw

Ryan Hughes raised to 32,000 from the cutoff and big blind Arthur Morris raised to 135,000 which was all in. Hughes said he had a really pretty Big O hand and Morris replied with ''That's good, that means you have aces''. Hughes called after a while and they started drawing.

Morris drew two and Hughes drew three in the first round. Morris only drew one in the second round and Hughes still drew three. Morris then announced he would still draw one in the final round and Hughes stood pat and tabled {7-}{6-}{5-}{4-}{2-}.

Morris showed {7-}{5-}{3-}{2-} and he was drawing to a wheel, needing a four or a six to double. The card he drew had two pips on the side and the suit wasn't on the table but when he opened it up it was the {7-} and he paired up to be eliminated in fourth place for $34,328.

Pot-Limit Omaha

Arthur Morris limped under the gun, Joey Couden overlimped on the button, and Ryan Hughes and Phil Hui joined them to the flop for the minimum price.

The flop fell {8-Spades}{5-Clubs}{j-Hearts} and the action was checked to Couden who potted. Hughes folded, Hui raised, getting rid of Morris, and Couden called for his remaining chips.

Couden held {a-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{6-Clubs} and Hui showed {j-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}.

The {q-Spades} landed on the turn and Couden was drawing very thin as he could only hope for a ten to chop. He wouldn't get one as the {j-Diamonds} hit the felt, and Hui busted him in fifth place.

Loren Klein raised to 30,000 in the first position and Ryan Hughes three-bet to 108,000 on the button. Klein matched the price.

The dealer rolled out a flop of {4-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{j-Clubs} and things quickly escalated as Klein potted, Hughes put him all in, and Klein called.

Klein: {a-Clubs}{k-Spades}{j-Spades}{6-Clubs}{2-Hearts}
Hughes: {a-Hearts}{a-Spades}{j-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{5-Spades}

The {k-Hearts} turn gave Klein two pair and his hand prevailed on the {6-Spades} river. Hughes had to give up 350,000 from his big stack.

Jonathan Depa shoved his last 86,000 from the hijack and Joey Couden called from the small blind. Both players pitched one and Couden was ahead, drawing to a nine-eight while Depa kept jack-nine.

Couden: {9-}{8-}{4-}{3-}
Depa: {j-}{9-}{8-}{6-}

Couden exposed his new card and it was a {2-}, leaving Depa drawing dead. Depa flipped a {q-} and then headed to the payout desk.

Klein: {a-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{5-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}

The Final Seven Are Set to Return at 2 p.m.

Bracelet
Bracelet

Seven players remain in Event #43: $2,500 Mixed Big Bet at the 2019 World Series of Poker and cards will be in the air at 2 p.m. local time in search for a new WSOP champion. Leading the pack is Ryan Hughes. Hughes missed out on his third bracelet after finishing runner-up in this exact event last year. Hughes lost the heads-up against Scott Bohlman and he won't encounter Bohlman in this tournament anymore this year as he finished in 8th place.

Arthur Morris and Jonathan Depa are the only players in the tournament who are at the final table without a bracelet. Depa finished the first day on top of the counts and he made it to the final table fourth on the leaderboard. Morris sits in second place right behind Hughes and could be winning his first WSOP bracelet in this event.

Phil Hui, Joseph Couden, Mike Sexton and Loren Klein are all still in the mix and they could add another bracelet to their collection. Hui came close already this series when he reached the final table in the $1,500 H.O.R.S.E. event and he finished 7th in the $10,000 Dealer's Choice event.

Cards will be in the air at 2 p.m. local time so make sure to keep refreshing PokerNews for all the latest updates as the winner emerges from the final seven to be crowned as World Series champion.
