Michael Mizrachi in Pole Position to Win His Third Poker Players Championship

Michael Mizrachi
Michael Mizrachi

Welcome to PokerNews' Day 4 coverage of Event #33: $50,000 Poker Players Championship.

The starting field of 87 players is down to just 12, each looking to have his name inscribed on the David "Chip" Reese Memorial Trophy and earn the distinction of being the best all-around player among their peers. Also up for grabs is the first-place prize of $1,239,126 and a coveted World Series of Poker gold bracelet.

On top of the chip counts is Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi who is looking to win the Poker Players Championship for the third time. Mizrachi won the PPC in both 2010 and 2012, earning his first and third bracelets in those events. Mizrachi came close again in 2016, but fell short in fourth place. The Poker Players Championship that year was won by another two-time winner still in the field. In addition to earning top honors in 2016, Brian Rast also won in between Mizrachi's victories in 2011. Rast is currently in peak form, too, having picked up his fourth bracelet less than one week ago.

The rest of the field is stacked, obviously, and perhaps no one left is more dangerous than 10-time bracelet winner Phil Ivey, currently fourth in chips. Ivey is back playing a full WSOP schedule for the first time since 2014, where he won that 10th bracelet in an eight-game mixed event similar to this one. Clearly, the field is tougher here, but Ivey is a favorite no matter the competition.

Jean-Robert Bellande shoved all in for 94,000 second to act. John Hennigan called him but Aaron Katz isolated with a reraise to 410,000.

Jean-Robert Bellande: {7-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}
Aaron Katz: {q-Spades}{q-Diamonds}

"Anyone have a seven?" Bellande asked.

The dealer rolled out {2-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}{6-Hearts}.

"It's been fun, boys," Bellande said.

The turn was a {k-Spades} and the river a {5-Hearts}, so Bellande hit the rail first here on Day 3.

2-7 Triple Draw

The action folded to Mike Leah in the small blind, and he raised to 120,000. Shaun Deeb pushed forward his 153,000 total, and Leah called.

Leah drew one and Deeb drew three. On the second draw, Leah stood pat and Deeb drew one.

On the final draw, saw Leah stood pat again as Deeb drew one.

Leah: {9-}{7-}{6-}{5-}{2-}
Deeb: {7-}{6-}{4-}{2-}

Deeb needed to hit any nine, eight, five, or three to stay alive, but as he began squeezing, he immediately found paint and was consequently eliminated in 10th place from the Poker Players Championship for $111,447 in prize money.

Ivey Doubles Last Hand Before Break

Phil Ivey
Phil Ivey

Stud Hi-Lo

Phil Ivey completed with the {j-Clubs} and Dan Smith raised with the {5-Diamonds}. Smith paired and bet fourth then picked up trips, but Ivey paired his jack and moved in for his last 85,000 on fifth.

Ivey: {j-Spades}{6-Spades}/{j-Clubs}{8-Spades}{j-Diamonds}
Smith: {a-Spades}{3-Spades}/{5-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{5-Hearts}

Ivey had the best of it and filled up with the {8-Clubs} while Smith caught a brick with the {10-Clubs}. Ivey didn't improve when he got the {9-Hearts} but he only needed to fade one card and the {k-Spades} wasn't it. Stay tuned for chip counts momentarily.

Mizrachi Continues to Run Pure

Michael Mizrachi

Limit Hold'em

Michael Mizrachi opened on the button with a raise and Brian Rast made it three bets from the small blind. Benny Glaser called in the big blind while Mizrachi called as well.

The flop was {Q-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{5-Hearts} and Rast bet. Glaser let out a deep exhale before making it two bets. Mizrachi then made it three bets and Rast and Glaser called.

The turn was the {K-Diamonds} and action checked to Mizrachi who bet. Rast made it two bets and Glaser quickly folded. Mizrachi then made it three bets and Rast tanked for a bit before calling.

On the {8-Spades} river, Rast checked. Mizrachi put out a bet and Rast dropped into the tank.

"Well, I got some of what I wanted," Rast said looking at his hand again. After a bit more in the tank, Rast called. Mizrachi turned over {J-Diamonds}{10-Hearts} for the nuts and Rast mucked quickly.

"Jesus," Glaser said quietly upon coming back to the table and see the pot pushed to Mizrachi. Mizrachi is up over six million after taking the pot.

2-7 Triple Draw

Brian Rast lost a sizeable stud hi-lo pot to Benny Glaser putting him on a very short stack heading into this hand.

Michael Mizrachi opened from the cutoff with a raise and Rast made it three bets on the button. Action folded back to Mizrachi who called.

Both players took two on the first draw and Mizrachi continued with a bet. Rast moved in for 145,000 and Mizrachi quickly called.

Mizrachi patted while Rast took two. On the last draw, Mizrachi patted again.

"Well the good news is, I improved," Rast said sweating his hand. He pitched away the {8-} and Mizrachi revealed his {9-}{7-}{5-}{4-}{3-}. Rast showed {8-}{6-}{4-}{2-}.

"So I need a two spotter, a three spotter, or a no spotter," Rast said. "And none of them is a good sweat."

He peeled the card and revealed the {K-} and that was it for Rast. The two-time winner of this event was eliminated by the only other two-time winner of this event. For his eighth-place finish, Rast will collect $144,049.

2-7 Triple Draw

Mike Leah raised and Michael Mizrachi reraised in the small blind. Leah called and turned out to be ahead in the draw taking one against two. Mizrachi bet anyway and Leah raised. Mizrachi called and drew one, while Leah was pat. Mizrachi check-called and draws repeated. Mizrachi checked and folded to an all-in bet of 80,000.

"Drawing dead," Leah declared.

"He definitely wasn't drawing dead, I saw his hand," Aaron Katz said.

"He could chop."
