Two Main Event Champions Remain in Event #3: $3,000 No-Limit Hold'em SHOOTOUT

Nível 25 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Joe Cada
Joe Cada

The second round of matches have been completed in Event #3: $3,000 No-Limit Hold'em SHOOTOUT, which started with 50 players spread out over 10 tables at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino. A total of 10 players moved onto Day 3, including 2009 Main Event Champion Joe Cada, who will be looking to hold up his third bracelet at the end of the day.

Cada already has two bracelets, 29 cashes, and over $10 million in earnings during the WSOP in his career. He had to go through a tough table of well-known players that included the likes of Arne Ruge, Bryce Yockey, Alexander Lynskey, and Chad Wassmuth. Ruge and Cada got all in when both players flopped a flush draw that resulted in Cada getting a big chip lead right before the second break of the day.

The 2014 EPT Barcelona €10,000 + 300 High Roller 8Max Champion Ihar Soika came out on top of a tough table that included 14-time bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth and three-time bracelet winner Eli Elezra. Soika overcame a lot of talk about being "young and too aggressive" by Hellmuth and Elezra. He showed patience and well-timed aggression as he eliminated both from his table, moving onto Day 3 and will now be in the hunt for his first WSOP bracelet.

Joe McKeehen
2015 Main Event Champion Joe McKeehen still in contention

Harry Lodge was the first to advance on Day 1 and would be the last to advance on Day 2 after a long up and down battle with Arkadiy Tsinis. Lodge spent most of the three-handed play as the short stack and showed a lot of patience as he waited for his spots. He hit an eight on the river to complete a set versus Tsinis during heads-up play, leaving his opponent with just under one big blind. He secured his way to Day 3 on the very next hand and will be looking for his first bracelet.

Other notable players include 2015 Main Event Champion Joe McKeehen, 2005 $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em Shootout Champion Anthony Reategui, 2014 €5,000 + 300 EPT Main Event runner-up Sam Phillips, and Joshua Turner who is a well know grinder that has 58 career cashes in the WSOP.

Day 3 will be starting at 12 p.m. on Saturday, June 2, and the blind levels will be 3,000/6,000 with a 1,000 ante. There will be a 15-minute break after every three rounds of play and an added 60-minute dinner break after the ninth level.

The PokerNews team will be covering this and every other event during WSOP this summer.

The board ran out {3-Spades}{J-Clubs}{9-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}{Q-Spades} — no help for Tsinis — and he was eliminated in the end. After finishing his table first, Lodge now was the last one to make it through to the next day.

The board read {9-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{a-Hearts}{5-Spades}{10-Spades} and Mao Qiu bet 60,000 into a pot around 90,000. Jeffrey Trudeau then moved all in for 235,000 and enough to cover Qiu.

After several minutes of thought, Qiu made the call and Trudeau then tabled {10-Clubs}{10-Diamonds} for a rivered full house. Qiu shook his head and showed {9-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} for a smaller full house.

Trudeau is now the first to move onto the Day 3 and will be looking to capture his first WSOP bracelet.

Cada Doubles Through Ruge Before Break

Nível 21 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Joe Cada
Joe Cada

Just before the break, Joe Cada completed his small blind. Arne Ruge raised to 9,000 in the big blind and Cada called.

The flop came {K-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}, Cada checked, Ruge bet 9,000. Cada raised to 33,300 and Ruge pondered his options. Ruge shoved with the bigger stack and Cada snap-called.

Joe Cada: {A-Clubs}{6-Clubs}
Arne Ruge: {8-Clubs}{5-Clubs}

They both had a flush draw with Cada also having a pair of sixes and the upper-hand with the higher club cards. Ruge also had a gut-shot straight draw.

The rest of the board was completed with the {6-Hearts} on the turn to give Cada trip sixes and the {a-Diamonds} on the river completed the story for Cada as he made it a full house in the end. After counting out the stacks, Cada had 121,200 in total, which meant that Ruge was back to just below a ton.

Reilly Fails With Royal Flush

Nível 19 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Tim Reilly
Tim Reilly

On table #406, Tim Reilly was a bit upset and was kind enough to tell what had happened, with help from the rest of the table.

Sam Phillips had raised to 3,800 from the under-the-gun position. Tim Reilly called from the cutoff and so did Chris Moorman from the big blind.

The flop came {A-}{A-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}, Moorman checked, Phillips bet 5,000 and Reilly called. Moorman got out of the way.

The turn brought them the {10-Diamonds}, Phillips check-called the 6,500 bet of Reilly.

The river completed the board with {4-Hearts}, Phillips checked again. Reilly bet 9,000 while having about 36,000 left. Phillips just called.

Sam Phillips: {A-Spades}{4-Spades}
Tim Reilly: {K-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}

Reilly was pretty miffed that Phillips only called while he had hit a full house against his own royal flush. The rest of the table all chuckled for a while after that (including Reilly himself).

A few hands later, John Andress was seen leaving the tournament area.

Markholt First Casualty of the Day

Nível 16 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Lee Markholt
Lee Markholt

The board read {J-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{8-Spades}{5-Spades} and there was about 60,000 in the middle already.

Arkadiy Tsinis shoved all in from under the gun and Lee Markholt had to make a decision. If he called, he would be at risk of being eliminated. He kept staring at the board and glancing at Tsinis. After about two minutes, Markholt threw in a 100-value chip as a call.

Tsinis flipped over {10-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} for the turned straight. Markholt looked at his own cards again but then got up and mucked them. Harry Lodge told the dealer that the cards had to be shown. The dealer turned over Markholt's cards which were {K-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds} for top pair, and he is out.

Giuseppe Pantaleo

Giuseppe Pantaleo raised to 2,200 from the cutoff and was called by both Frank Williams on the button and Jimmy D'Ambrosio in the small blind.

The flop came {A-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{9-Clubs}. D'Ambrosio immediately threw in 1,000 as a bet. Both Pantaleo and Williams called. The turn brought the {8-Clubs}. D'Ambrosio hesitated a bit and checked. So did Pantaleo and Williams.

The river completed the board with the {J-Spades}, and D'Ambrosio quickly bet 3,500. Pantaleo glanced at D'Ambrosio and then called. Williams folded. D'Ambrosio tabled {K-Hearts}{2-Hearts} and was beaten by the {A-Spades}{J-Diamonds} of Pantaleo.
