Day 1a Attracts 771 Players as Sweden's Martin Jacobson Sits On Top

Nível 5 : 200/400, 50 ante

In the past five weeks, the 2014 World Series of Poker has seen 64 events begin, new and repeat bracelet winners crowned, and millionaires made, but the marquee event of the series began on Saturday with Day 1a of the $10,000 Main Event taking center stage.

With this year seeing the WSOP celebrating 10 years at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino, 2005 Champion Joe Hachem sent the cards in the air. Fellow Main Event Champions led players into the field with both Ryan Riess and Greg Merson finding themselves located on the feature table, while Chris Moneymaker, Tom McEvoy, and Johnny Chan were also in the field alongside bracelet winners Jason Mercier, Phil Laak, Ted Forrest, Hoyt Corkins, John Monnette, Billy Baxter, Antonio Esfandiari, David Singer, and Layne Flack.

It would take until midway through the second level until the first few bust outs started to occur as Steven Sanzone was bounced out the door before Bruno Fitoussi, Steven Gee, "All-American" Dave Swanson, Jean-Robert Bellande, David Chiu, and Marc-Etienne McLaughlin were just a handful of the players eliminated throughout the day as the first flight's starting field of 771 was cut down to 505 by the end of play.

Although the chip lead rotated between the likes of Aaron Wilt, Mukul Pahuja, Ken Einiger, Jon Broderick, and Nick DiVella throughout the day, it would be no-limit hold'em beast and Swede Martin Jacobson ending the day as chip leader with 200,100.

Wilt (157,650), Seamus Cahill (150,775), Andy Hwang (118,875), Pahuja (114,800), and Alex Simic (110,675) all round out the top few chip counts while the likes of Flack (75,450), Riess (70,225), Moneymaker (69,850), Esfandiari (59,775), and Annette Obrestad (54,625) all sit with healthy stacks.

The PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be back on deck at 12 p.m. (PDT) on Sunday to provide all the Day 1b action live from the 2014 World Series of Poker, so be sure to tune back in.

Schemion Gets There

Nível 5 : 200/400, 50 ante
Ole Schemion
Ole Schemion

German super star Ole Schemion has just locked up a big stack near the end of the day and one of our colleagues explained to us what happened.

On a {K-}{7-}{3-} flop the action was checked to Schemion who bet 1,650 and one of his opponents raised to 3,675. The third player folded and Schemion called. On the turn another {7-} popped up and Schemion called a 4,200-chip bet.

The river was the {A-} and Schemion's opponent bet 8,000 with about 11,000 chips left behind. The German pro moved all in and he was called by {3-}{3-}. Schemion tabled {A-}{7-} for a bigger full house and he raked in the pot.

Catching the action with the board reading {10-Hearts}{J-Spades}{5-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{7-Hearts} and roughly 14,000 in the middle, Kyle Ray moved all in for his last 9,025.

Australian David Gorr went deep into the tank for several minutes before making the call.

Ray tabled {A-Spades}{Q-Hearts} for just ace-high, and Gorr tabled his {A-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds} for a slightly better ace-high to eliminate Ray and move his stack up to over 53,000 in chips.

Jacobson and His Pocket Tens

Nível 5 : 200/400, 50 ante
Martin Jacobson
Martin Jacobson

After the player in the cutoff seat raised to 1,200, Martin Jacobson reraised to 4,200 from the small blind. A woman in the big blind then reraised to 10,500, and action folded back to Jacobson. He thought for a bit, then moved all in. With about 17,000 behind, the lady called with the {A-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds} to put herself at risk. Jacobson had the {10-Spades}{10-Hearts}.

The flop came down {Q-Spades}{9-Clubs}{8-Clubs}, and Jacobson stayed in the lead. The turn was the {J-Diamonds} and gave Jacobson a straight, leaving the woman needing one of the remaining two tens in the deck to stay alive.

The river card paired the board with the {8-Diamonds}, and Jacobson had made a full house to win the pot. He moved up over 160,000 as there remained about 35 minutes left in the day.

Wilt Takes the Lead with Massive Pot

Nível 5 : 200/400, 50 ante
Aaron Wilt
Aaron Wilt

Aaron Wilt was one of the big stacks already here on Day 1a of the 2014 World Series of Poker Main Event, but his day just got a bit better. Wilt was just involved in a pot of around 140,000 that saw him vault up to 166,500 in chips.

Picking up the action on the {10-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{5-Clubs} flop, Wilt had check-raised his opponent's bet to 19,000, only to have the player come back with a reraise to 32,000. After a minute of thought, Wilt moved all in. His opponent tanked for a little bit, then called it off for around 65,000 total.

Wilt tabled the {5-Hearts}{5-Spades} for bottom set of fives, and his opponent rolled over the {K-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}.

The turn was the {6-Diamonds}, and the river was the {2-Spades}. Wilt's set of fives stayed the best hand, and he eliminated his opponent while shooting up and into the chip lead.

The Power's Gone

Nível 5 : 200/400, 50 ante
Chad Power
Chad Power

Chad Power, chip leader after the second level of the day, has just been knocked out by Trevor Reardon. When we arrived on the scene another player had taken Power's seat and Cliff Goldkind was kind enough to explain to us what happened.

"He lost a huge pot where he got it all in with a straight against a player with a turned straight," Goldkind said. Power's opponent rivered quad aces and doubled up to around 75,000 chips. That man was Trevor Reardon from England and he's now sitting on a comfortable stack.

A little while later Power ended up all in with {Q-}{J-} against another player's {A-}{8-} and the board brought him no help.

Jacobson Puts Zeidman to the Test

Nível 5 : 200/400, 50 ante
Martin Jacobson
Martin Jacobson

Martin Jacobson raised to 900 in early position, Cory Zeidman three-bet to 3,100 on the button, and a player cold-called out of the big bling.

"How much do you have behind?" Jacobson asked Zeidman.

"Around twenty," Zeidman told the Swede. "Not enough to put a dent in your stack."

Jacobson made the call, and the flop fell {4-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{q-Spades}. The action checked to Zeidman, he continued for 6,100, the player in the big blind folded, and Jacobson lazily tossed out a handful of orange T5,000 chips, setting Zeidman all in.

Zeidman let out a long sigh.

"Nice bet," he said after a two-minute tank, folding his hand.

Jacobson silently slid his own cards into the muck, and dragged the pot.

Pahuja Wins Big From McLellan

Nível 5 : 200/400, 50 ante
Mukul Pahuja
Mukul Pahuja

There was an open to 900 and Duncan McLellan raised it to 1,900. Mukul Pahuja was on the button and made it 5,300. The original raiser got out of the way and McLellan stuck in a five-bet to 16,900.

Pahuja stared McLellan down and made the call. The flop was {6-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} and McLellan bet 20,400. More intense staring from Pahuja before he made the call. The turn card was the {3-Diamonds} and now McLellan checked. Pahuja bet 38,000 and stared hard again.

McLellan had a big decision to make as the turn bet was around half of his remaining stack. He mulled it over for several minutes before saying he had the best hand but made the fold.

Yevgeniy Timoshenko to his right asked him if he folded aces but McLellan said he had queens.

Break Time; Jacobson Climbs the Leaderboard, Notables Topple

Nível 4 : 150/300, 25 ante
Martin Jacobson
Martin Jacobson

The remaining players are heading on a 20-minute break.

Following the resumption of play after dinner break, the tone of the level would be eliminations with "All American" Dave Swanson being eliminated by Kenny Tran. Swanson called all-in holding {Q-Hearts}{Q-Clubs} on a {4-Spades}{4-Hearts}{2-Spades}{J-Clubs} board and was up against Tran's {A-Spades}{J-Spades}. The river landed the {8-Spades} and Swanson was headed to the rail.

Jean-Robert Bellande entered late and exited early as Mustapha Kanit had his aces cracked before being eliminated shortly after as Trishelle Cannatella, Blake Bohn, Jeff Gross, Phil Laak and David Chiu all found themselves on the rail also.

However level four would really belong to only one player; Martin Jacobson. Jacobson began the day see-sawing up and down, but this level saw him win a pot holding {10-Spades}{10-Clubs} against {A-Clubs}{2-Clubs} on a {7-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{J-Diamonds} before scooping another pot with a bet on the turn to push his stack upwards of 120,000. At-the-time chip leader Jon Broderick then sat on Jacobson's right, but after he lost a pot to John Monnette, Jacobson took the top spot on the leaderboard and ended the level as chip leader with 122,800. Sitting directly behind the Swede include Ezzie (116,250), Broderick (103,600), DiVella (99,350), and two-time WSOP Main Event Champion Johnny Chan (88,000).

The big news that also got announced in the closing few minutes of the level were that a total of 771 players entered Day 1a to be substantially lower then the 943 that took a seat in last year's Day 1a.

WSOPToday’s Flight A of #MainEvent drew 771 entrants. About 600 remain. Flight B starts @ noon tomorrow (Sunday) & Flight C is Monday @ noon.
