The Money Will Be Reached Here on Day 2 of Event #25

Mike Matusow will return to action on Day 2.
Mike Matusow will return to action on Day 2.

Today Event #25: $2,500 Omaha/Seven-Card Stud Hi-Low of the 2014 World Series of Poker continues as the remaining 139 players from a 470-player field look to play through the money and onward to the final table — or at least as close as they can get in 10 one-hour levels of play.

The top 48 players will earn a portion of the $1,069,250 prize pool, with the eventual winner taking home $267,327. Last year's champ, Mike Gorodinsky, who defeated a field of 374 players to win his first gold bracelet, fell in the last level of the night on Day 1, which means a new champion will be crowned.

"Womp Womp. No title defense for me this year. At least I actually played well today, cards just didn't cooperate. #OTTNO," Gorodinsky tweeted after his bust.

So who will be the next $2,500 Omaha/Seven-Card Stud Hi-Low champ? Will it be Cameron Tahmasebi, who begins today as the chip leader with 65,200? Or perhaps one of the other big stacks like Fu Wong (64,300), Brian Nichols (62,500), James Hoeppner (57,700), or Tom Schneider (57,600)?

All of these men have a chip advantage, but by no means do they have an easy path to the money. Among those standing in their way are John D’Agostino (54,900), Mike Leah (50,100), Michael Moed (46,300), Ashly Butler (40,800), Dutch Boyd (37,400), George Danzer (36,500), Mike Matusow (25,700), and Vanessa Selbst (22,300).

Speaking of Matusow, he joined PokerNews' Chad Holloway for an impromptu interview on Day 1 where he talked about playing in this event. Have a listen:

Cards will be in the air at 2 p.m. local time, which is about an hour from now. Join us then as we bring you all happenings from 10 more levels of play here in Event #25: $2,500 Omaha/Seven-Card Stud Hi-Low.

Early Pot for Danzer; Shak & Hausen Hit the Rail

Dan Shak on Day 1.
Dan Shak on Day 1.

Stud Hi-Low

We picked up the action on fifth street when both George Danzer and Dan Shak checked to Bruce Levitt, who bet 2,000. Two calls followed and then Danzer lead out on sixth street. Shak folded, dropping his stack to 6,400, while Levitt made the call. Levitt called another bet of 2,000 on seventh and discovered the bad news.

Danzer: {a-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{2-Hearts} {2-Spades}{8-Spades}{3-Spades}
Shak: {x-}{x-} / {6-Hearts}{j-Spades}{4-Hearts}{q-Hearts} fold
Levitt: {x-}{x-} / {5-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{9-Hearts} / {x-}

Danzer tabled two pair with an 8-4-3-2-A low, and it was good as Levitt scooped up his cards and sent them to the muck.

Meanwhile, Shak would go on to bust a couple of hands later, joining Tobias Hausen as an early Day 2 elimination.

Danzer Continues to Rolls; Eliminates Friedman

Nível 12 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante
George Danzer on Day 1.
George Danzer on Day 1.

Stud Hi-Low

Just before the level went up, Adam Friedman got his last 900 in after Manuel Bevand had completed. George Danzer then raised, Bevand called, and a side pot was created. Bevand proceeded to check-call a bet on fourth before betting out on fifth when he paired his nine. Danzer called and then raised on sixth. Bevand called and then check-called a bet on seventh.

Danzer: {6-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}{5-Spades} / {3-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{j-Spades}
Bevand: {9-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{a-Clubs} / {9-Spades}{7-Spades}{3-Hearts}
Friedman: {9-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{2-Spades}{6-Clubs} / {10-Hearts}{10-Spades}{6-Spades}

Friedman ended up with two pair, which was third best as Bevand had a set of nines and Danzer a straight to the six. Danzer's hand was good for both the high and low, and he scooped the pot while sending Friedman, a WSOP bracelet winner, to the rail.

Meanwhile, a short-stacked Phil "OMGClayAiken" Galfond was eliminated in a stud hi-low hand one table over.

Chau Says Ciao

Chau Giang
Chau Giang

Omaha Hi-Low

In the previous hand, Allen Kessler walked by and asked "Hey Chau, didn't you say no more tournaments?" Chau Giang replied "This will be my last one," before calling a raise in the big blind and then folding the {3-Hearts}{J-Spades}{2-Clubs} flop. He had next to no chips left and moved all in for 2,100 one hand later when Greg Mascio raised from middle position.

The small blind called as well and Giang tossed in his last few chips. On the {9-Spades}{Q-Spades}{7-Spades} flop, Giang said "I hope I have spades" and Mascio bet. The small blind check-folded and Mascio asked "You don't know what you have?" "1-2-3-7 black," Giang replied. Both turned over their cards.

Mascio: {Q-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{4-Spades}
Giang: {A-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{3-Spades}{7-Hearts}

The {9-Hearts} on the turn saw him drawing dead and he left the table after the dealer spread the {K-Diamonds} river. Mascio is back where he started the day.

Mizrachi Busts Boyd in Big Pot

Nível 15 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Dutch Boyd
Dutch Boyd

Stud Hi-Low

"This is the pot for this table," we heard Mike "The Mouth" Matusow shout. We made our way over to discover a big three-way stud hi-low pot in progress. There was about 60,000 in the middle as the three players went to seventh street. Dutch Boyd checked, as did Michael Chow, and Robert Mizrachi bet 5,000. Boyd called off his last 2,000 while Chow opted to preserve the 3,000 he had behind.

Chow : {x-}{x-} / {4-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{j-Hearts} / {x-} fold
Mizrachi: {q-Spades}{a-Hearts}{j-Clubs}{5-Clubs} / {q-Hearts}{5-Spades}{10-Diamonds}
Boyd: {x-}{x-} / {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{j-Diamonds} / {x-} muck

"Queens up," Mizrachi said and tabled queens and fives.

"Queens up is good," a crestfallen Boyd said before sending his cards to the dealer and bowing out in 54th place.

Leary & Klodnicki Double Bubble; to Split 48th Place Money

Nível 16 : 3,000/6,000, 700 ante
Chris Klodnicki & Dustin Leary we co-bubble boys.
Chris Klodnicki & Dustin Leary we co-bubble boys.

It took nearly an hour for the bubble to burst, and it's only fitting in a tournament played with split-spot game that two players would fall in the last hand before the dinner break and have to split 48th-place money,

Omaha Hi-Low

In one hand, we arrived at the table with a board reading {8-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{5-Spades}{a-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}. A short-stacked Dustin Leary was already all in from the big blind, while action was complete between Tyson Marks and Mike Roeseler.

Marks: {3-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}
Roeseler: {k-Hearts}{k-Spades}{2-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}
Leary: {a-Spades}{q-Spades}{2-Spades}{7-Spades}

Marks had the wheel to scoop the pot, which eliminated Leary on the bubble. However, two tables down there was another all-in pot.

Stud Hi-Low

Chris Klodnicki was all in after third and got three callers, Tom Schneider got out of the way on fifth and then the action was capped between Julie Schneider and Christopher McHugh on sixth. On seventh there was just single bet and call.

Tom Schneider: {x-}{x-} / {Q-Spades}{10-Clubs}{3-Hearts} muck
Julie Schneider: {3-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} / {6-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{5-Spades} / {7-Spades}
McHugh: {5-Hearts}{a-Spades} / {4-Clubs}{3-Spades}{6-Hearts}{2-Hearts} / {8-Diamonds}
Klodnicki: {2-Diamonds}{3-Clubs} / {5-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{6-Clubs}{J-Diamonds} / {10-Hearts}

Schneider won the high with a seven high straight, while McHugh took the low with a wheel. That sent Klodnicki out as the co-bubble boy. Klodnicki and Leary will split the $4,694.

The Shark Has Been Hung Out to Dry

Nível 18 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Humberto Brenes
Humberto Brenes

Omaha Hi-Low

Konstantin Puchkov raised to 10,000 from early position and Humberto Brenes defended from the big blind. When the flop came down {q-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}, Brenes led out for 5,000 and then called off his last 4,000 when Puchkov raised.

Brenes: {3-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{2-Spades}{j-Diamonds}
Puchkov: {a-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{6-Spades}

Puchkov was ahead with two pair and an ace-three low draw, but Brenes held a wrap. The Costa Rican was on his feet with his shark card protector telling the dealer to deliver him the right card (in broken English of course).

The dealer did not oblige on the {9-Spades} turn, nor on the {4-Clubs} river, which improved Puchkov to a full house with no qualifying low.

Brenes' 32nd-place finish marks his sixth cash of the 2014 WSOP, which is an impressive feat in and of itself.

Cameron Tahmasebi Eliminated In 24th Place ($7,784)

Nível 19 : 6,000/12,000, 1,500 ante
Cameron Tahmasebi
Cameron Tahmasebi

Stud Hi-Low

Cameron Tahmasebi raised to 12,000 and Jeet Sketty clicked it to 18,000. Mike Matusow called and so did Fu Wong. Tahmasebi was now all in for 13,500 on third and the three players proceeded to fourth. Matusow bet 6,000, Wong called, Sketty made it 12,000 and Matusow three bet to 18,000. Wong was skeptical and folded.

Matusow said, "If I win this pot, everybody will be playing for second."

Until sixth, Matusow was betting and had another 4,500 behind, Sketty put him to the test and all turned over their cards.

Wong: {x-}{x-} / {8-Clubs}{Q-Clubs} muck
Tahmasebi: {8-Hearts}{8-Spades} / {9-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{6-Spades}{4-Diamonds} / {6-Clubs}
Sketty: {Q-Diamonds}{10-Hearts} / {10-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{J-Spades} / {5-Hearts}
Matusow: {5-Spades}{7-Clubs} / {6-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{J-Hearts} / {K-Hearts}

"Come on, I deserve this," yelled Matusow, almost losing his voice. The dealer delivered seventh and Matusow started cheering loudly, running away from the tournament area and everybody in the rather silent Amazon room could hear him. Matusow pounded the table in celebration as he continued to laud the hand. He raked in the massive pot with the straight and low and was then given a one round penalty for his "outrageous behavior."

"Is this for real? I didn't do anything. You get a penalty for getting excited? I didn't even swear." The tournament staff claimed they were only doing their job.

Matusow was visibly upset by the ruling almost to the point of tears. Some players, such as Joe Tehan and Owais Ahmed came to his defense, while others like Robert Mizrachi and Matt Lefkowitz tried their best to calm Matusow down and get him refocused.

In the meanwhile, Tahmasebi went to the payout desk to collect $7,784 for his 24th place finish.

Jeet Shetty Eliminated in 21st Place ($7,784)

Nível 20 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Jeet Shetty
Jeet Shetty

Omaha Hi-Low

Jeet Shetty opened for 16,000 from the hijack and Christopher McHugh called from the button. Fu Wong came along from the big blind and three players saw a flop of {5-Spades}{9-Hearts}{3-Spades}. Wong checked, Shetty bet 8,000, and McHugh raised to 16,000. Wong thought for awhile before making the call, Shetty moved in for 24,000 total, and McHugh popped it to 32,000. Two more raises saw Wong get all in for 42,000 total and all the hands were turned up.

Shetty: {2-Spades}{a-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}
McHugh: {a-Spades}{4-Spades}{5-Clubs}{6-Spades}
Wong: {a-Clubs}{q-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}

The {Q-Diamonds} turn and {Q-Hearts} river have Wong the improbably win with trips, which was good enough to scoop the pot. Shetty was eliminated on the hand and will take home $7,784 for his 21st-place finish.
