D’Alesandro Dominates Day 1 in the Latest $1,000 No-Limit

Nível 11 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Chip Leader Dave D'Alesandro
Chip Leader Dave D'Alesandro

As usual, the latest $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em event drew a massive field to the Rio Sunday.

By the time registration closed, a grand total of 2,043 had signed up for the budget bracelet event. But as quick as they came into the Pavilion and Brasilia Rooms, the faster the masses dusted off the rather paltry 3,000-chip starting stacks and the field was cut to 215 and in the money just 20 minutes into the day’s last level.

Two players busted on the same hand to split 216th-place money and avoid the heartbreak of the bubble with their piece of an $1,875 score, leaving the rest of the field to chase the healthy $335,659 and World Series of Poker gold bracelet that awaits the winner here.

The post-bubble line up at the payouts cage then got longer and longer as short stacks shoved in the money. By the time the level was finally through, just 168 players remained headed into tomorrow’s Day 2.

Some big names built some big stacks today including the legendary eight-time WSOP bracelet winner Erik Seidel, 2004 WSOP Main Event runner-up David Williams, 2013 WSOP Main Event finalist JC Tran, and 2012 $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em bracelet winner Dominik Nitsche.

Several other recognizable figures also built towers of checks, including 2010 WSOP Main Event finalists Soi Nguyen and Jason Senti, WSOP bracelet winner James Mackey and WPT Player of the Year Mukul Pahuja.

The first two players over the 100,000-chip mark included David D’Alesandro and Simon Lam, the latter of whom got the best of WSOP circuit god Dwyte Pilgrim to snatch the sizable stack he spent most of the day building.

Lam slowed down a little after that, but D’Alesandro did not, busting player after player on the way to a chip-leading 154,400 stack.

Play will resume at 1 p.m. inside the Amazon Room tomorrow with hopes of reaching the final table. Check back with PokerNews Live Updates early and often to follow all the action.

Seidel Doubles With Set

Nível 11 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Erik Seidel, pictured in a different event.

The cards were already flipped and the board run out by the time we got to Table 30. Erik Seidel had {7-Clubs}{7-Diamonds} in front of him, good for a set on the {7-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{q-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{6-Diamonds} board. That was bad news for his opponent, who held {k-Clubs}{k-Spades}.

According to players reconstructing the hand afterwards, three people had put in 2,300 each before the flop, and the player with kings bet 3,200. Seidel raised to 7,000, the player with kings reraised to 14,100, and Seidel shipped.

The player with kings lamented Seidel's stack, saying if Seidel had 10,000 more he would have gotten away from the cowboys.

Merson Mucked

Nível 10 : 400/800, 100 ante
Greg Merson
Greg Merson

Greg Merson found a good spot and went with it, pushing all in over a button raise for 11,100 from the big blind.

The button called and Merson's {a-Clubs}{9-Hearts} was ahead of the button's {a-Spades}{7-Spades}.

All that changed on the all-spade {4-Spades}{5-Spades}{6-Spades} flop, however, and Merson was sent home after a {q-Clubs} turn and {5-Diamonds} river.

Nitsche Calls Flowers

Nível 9 : 300/600, 75 ante
Dominik Nitsche
Dominik Nitsche

Dominik Nitsche continues his domination here sending Randal Flowers home empty handed just moments ago.

We caught the hand with Flowers all in for some 10,000 in chips on an {q-Hearts}{5-Spades}{6-Spades}{3-Diamonds} board. Nitsche took his time about it, but made the call with {j-Hearts}{j-Spades} finding he was ahead of Flowers' {a-Spades}{4-Spades}.

The {j-Clubs} on the river did Flowers in and Nitsche appears to have the chip lead.

Pilgrim's Plunder

Nível 7 : 150/300, 25 ante
Dwyte Pilgrim and Paul Wasicka
Dwyte Pilgrim and Paul Wasicka

Dwyte Pilgrim has his stack up close to 50k and isn't running too bad here.

We saw him get it all in pre-flop against two opponents. One had {j-Clubs}{j-Hearts} and the other {a-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}.

Pilgrim was sitting on {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds} and after a board of {a-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}{5-Hearts} he helped bust one player and chopped the pot with the other.

Mackey Squeezes, Gets Caught, Doubles Anyway

Nível 6 : 100/200, 25 ante
James Mackey, pictured in an earlier event.

Alex Queen opened to 450 and was called by the cutoff and button. In the big blind, James Mackey moved all in for 4,925, and Queen folded. The cutoff pushed over the top, and the button got out of the way.

"You're good," Mackey said, turning over {a-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}.

The cutoff, though, only held {2-Spades}{2-Clubs}, meaning Mackey had solid equity with his overs.

"I'm happy to see that," Mackey said with a smile, clearly pleased he wasn't dominated.

The board ran out {10-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{3-Hearts}{q-Spades}{8-Hearts} giving Mackey a pair of sixes for the double up.

Hamilton, Cada Ousted in One Hand

Nível 3 : 50/100, 0 ante
Joe Cada busted out with KK.
Joe Cada busted out with KK.

After a flop of {4-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{7-Spades}, former Main Event winner Joe Cada, Lisa Hamilton, and Jeremy Gold got it all in.

Gold: {4-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}
Hamilton: {a-Hearts}{2-Hearts}
Cada: {k-Clubs}{k-Hearts}

Gold had flopped a boat, and Hamilton was drawing nearly dead with a flush draw, while Cada needed a king. The {q-Clubs} turn and {8-Clubs} river kept Gold's hand best, and he scored a double KO over two notable players.

After the hand, Cada graciously posed for photos with Gold and one of the other players at the table before exiting the room.

Esfandiari Out

Antonio Esfandiari, pictured in a different event.

According to Jeremy Putthoff, he flopped bottom set against Antonio Esfandiari's middle pair and flush draw and held to leave Esfandiari with just one T100 chip. "The Magician" busted a short time later, and Putthoff, who recently finished third at Mid-States Poker Tour Meskwaki for $36,000, has a nice early stack.

Harris Still Hot

Nível 1 : 25/25, 0 ante
Lance Harris (Event 11)
Lance Harris (Event 11)

Lance Harris, fresh off a fourth-place finish in Event #11: $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em - Six Handed for just under $120,000, is keeping it rolling here at Event #21.

According to Harris, he opened in late position and got three-bet by a player in the blinds. Harris then flopped trips with {a-}{j-} on a flop with two jacks, and he raised and bet the turn. When the fourth {j-} in the deck hit the river, Harris got it all in against an opponent holding {a-}{a-}. Rough beat for Harris' opponent, but great fortune for Harris, who has a nice early stack now.
