Merkow Makes Big Laydown

Nível 21 : 6,000/12,000, 2,000 ante
Mustapha Kanit
Mustapha Kanit

Mustapha Kanit raised it up to 20,000 preflop from early position and Gregg Merkow made the call in the big blind. The flop was dealt {k-Clubs}{9-Spades}{8-Diamonds} and Merkow check-called Kanit's bet of 20,000. The turn was the {2-Diamonds} and Merkow check-raised to 180,000 after Kanit made it 55,000 to go. Kanit called and the river card was the {3-Diamonds}. Merkow led out for 125,000 and Kanit pushed all in for 541,000.

"I need a count," Merkow said, his arms in the air anticipating a tough decision. "This is going to take me a long time guys," he warned the table. "I don't know if I'm good enough to lay this down."

With most of the players out of their seats stretching their legs, Merkow finally made a decision about three minutes later. He showed {8-Clubs}{8-Spades} for a set as he folded.

"I'll show you one," Kanit said. He slid out the {k-Diamonds} and showed the table.

Gillis with the Catch and Release

Nível 20 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante

Jaime Kaplan opened to 20,000 from early position and Ted Gillis made the call from the big blind. The flop was the {2-Clubs}{a-Clubs}{a-Hearts} and Gillis bet 32,000 and Kaplan made the call. The turn was the {a-Spades} and Gillis checked. Kaplan bet 52,000 and Gillis raised to 152,000.

Kaplan made the call and Gillis excitedly tabled his cards. Gillis apparently thought the board had completed and was so excited about his quads that he showed his winning hand of {a-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} early. After the {8-Hearts} river and an embarassing all in bet on the river, Kaplan made the fold.

The pressure may be getting to Gillis as this tournament gets deep, as he had his opponent reeled in but let him off of the hook and possibly some chips as well. To add insult, Gillis received a two-hand penalty for exposing his cards prematurely.

Jeffrey Yarchever Eliminated in 20th Place ($15,178)

Nível 20 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante

We walked up to a board of {10-Hearts}{9-Spades}{3-Clubs} and Jeffrey Yarchever had bet 38,000 and was facing a raise to 150,000 from Dejan Divkovic that would put Yarchever all in.

Yarchever thought for a few minutes before finally coaxing himself to call with {k-Spades}{j-Spades} for the inside straight draw and back-door flush draw. Divkovic had {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts} and held as the board completed {7-Hearts}{5-Spades} and Yarchever hit the rail.

Julius Malzanini
Julius Malzanini

We walked up to the action on a flop of {k-Spades}{5-Spades}{4-Spades} and Julius Malzanini snap-called an all in bet from Gregg Merkow. Malzanini turned over {k-Clubs}{k-Diamonds} for top set, but Malzanini had flopped the flush with {q-Spades}{10-Spades}.

Malzanini still had outs, but they didn't come as the board ran out {q-Clubs}{9-Hearts} and Malzanini is gone.
