Matt Waxman Defeats Eric Baldwin in Epic Heads-Up Battle to Win First Gold Bracelet

Nível 32 : 80,000/160,000, 2,000 ante
WSOP Gold Bracelet Winner Matt Waxman

It’s early in the 2013 World Series of Poker, but the Event #7 $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em final table will no doubt go down as one of the most stacked of the summer. The day began with five amateurs who combined for $2,968 in WSOP earnings and five established pros with more than $4 million in combined earnings; what’s more, two of the final table participants were seeking their second bracelet—Brent Hanks and Eric “basebadly” Baldwin.

Unfortunately for them, it was 28-year-old Matt Waxman who prevailed in a memorable final table to capture the $305,952 first-place prize and his first gold bracelet.

The first elimination of the day came within minutes when Scott Yelton fell to Jess Dioquino, bringing about the official final table of nine.

On Hand #23 of the final table, Baldwin managed to double through Jason Koon. Six hands later, Koon was dispatched in ninth place by Hanks, good for $22,435.

In Level 24, Matt Waxman eliminated Tuu Ho on Hand #41 to take over the chip lead, and then sent Robert Dreyfuss out the door 21 hands later. One level later, on Hand #73, Jacob Jung was sent packing in sixth place for $51,086.

After losing a good portion of his chips in Hand #74, Hanks was unable to recover and saw his dreams of a second bracelet cut short by Baldwin 20 hands later in a brutal bad beat.

Five hands later, the start-of-the-day chip leader, Amit Makhija, was eliminated by Waxman when he ran queens straight into aces. Three-handed play was a quick affair and saw the last of the amateurs, Dioquino, fall to Baldwin.

Heads-up play began with Waxman holding a 3.1-million-to-2.4-million chip lead over Baldwin. The Wisconsinite was able to double into the chip lead 17 hands into heads-up play, but eight hands later Waxman reclaimed it with a double of his own.

The two would battle for 187 hands over the course of nearly seven hours, but during that time the duo swapped the chip lead multiple times. It really was an epic heads-up match with both men trying their upmost to win poker’s most prestigious prize. Unfortunately there could only be one winner, and as you already know that man was Waxman. Of course you can read the final hand simply by scrolling down.

Eric Baldwin Eliminated in 2nd Place ($189,220)

Nível 32 : 80,000/160,000, 2,000 ante
Eric Baldwin - 2nd Place
Eric Baldwin - 2nd Place

Hand #293: It was an epic 187-hand heads-up match that last nearly seven hours, but it has finally come to an end. It happend when Eric Baldwin moved all in from the button for 1.025 million and Matt Waxman snap-called.

Baldwin: {7-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}
Waxman: {A-Hearts}{5-Spades}

Waxman got it in good, but as we'd seen so many times before during the heads-up match, that didn't matter much. It seemed the railbirds expected a double, but the reality that it could be ending came when the {a-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{3-Spades} flop gave Waxman a pair of aces and a huge lead.

Of course the turn had to bring a sweat, and it did when the dealer burned and turned the {6-Spades}. Baldwin could stay alive with a five on the river, but this time it was not meant to be as the {6-Clubs} peeled off.

Baldwin was denied his second gold bracelet but left with $189,220 to held soothe the pain.

Baldwin Regains the Chip Lead

Heads Up: Eric Baldwin & Matt Waxman
Heads Up: Eric Baldwin & Matt Waxman

Hand #195: In what is already an epic heads-up match, Eric Baldwin has just pulled into the chip lead for a second time.

It happened when he raised to 160,000 from the button and Matt Waxman called. The latter check-called bets of 110,000 on the {5-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{9-Spades} flop and 265,000 on the {2-Spades} river before Baldwin fired out a healthy 885,000 on the {Q-Clubs} river. Waxman took his time before whispering, "Call."

Baldwin tabled the {9-Hearts}{7-Hearts} for trip nines and it was good as Waxman sent his cards to the muck.

Jess Dioquino Eliminated in 3rd Place ($130,825)

Nível 25 : 15,000/30,000, 5,000 ante
Jess Dioquino - 3rd Place
Jess Dioquino - 3rd Place

Hand #105: Jess Dioquino moved all in from the small blind and Eric Baldwin called him from the big. Dioquino tabled the {Q-Clubs}{2-Hearts} and he was dominated by the {Q-Spades}{10-Spades} of Baldwin. Dioquino was looking for a deuce, but there was none to be found as the board ran out {j-Clubs}{8-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{k-Clubs}.

With Dioquino's elimination in third place, for which he earned $130,825, two well-respected poker pros are left to battle heads up. Baldwin is seeking his second piece of WSOP gold while Waxman is seeking his first (the closest he ever came was third in a 2011 event).

Amit Makhija Eliminated in 4th Place ($94,353)

Nível 25 : 15,000/30,000, 5,000 ante
Amit Makhija - 5th Place
Amit Makhija - 5th Place

Hand #99: Matt Waxman raised to 60,000 from the button and Amit Makhija called from the big blind. The {4-Spades}{5-Clubs}{8-Hearts} flop saw Makhija, who started the day as the chip leader, check and Waxman bet 50,000. Makhija responded by check-raising all in for 300,000 or so and Waxman snap-called.

Waxman: {A-Diamonds}{A-Hearts}
Makhija: {Q-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}

It was a cooler for Makhija as he ran his pocket pair straight into pocket rockets. Neither the {5-Diamonds} turn nor {4-Clubs} river changed a thing, and that was all she wrote for Makhija. He will take home $94,353 for his fourth-place finish.

Brent Hanks - 5th Place

Hand #91: Jess Dioquino raised to 66,000 under the gun and won the pot.

Hand #92: Jess Dioquino got a walk in the big blind.

Hand #93: Eric Baldwin got a walk in the big blind.

Hand #94: Action folded to Eric Baldwin in the small blind and he shoved all in to put the pressure on Brent Hanks in the big blind. Hanks looked down at the {8-Clubs}{8-Hearts}, called off for 290,000 and was excited to see he was dominating the {3-Spades}{3-Hearts} of Baldwin.

The pair were the only ones at the final table with WSOP gold (they each have one), but Hanks' dream of capturing his second was put in serious jeopardy when the {4-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{10-Spades} flop gave Baldwin a set of threes. The {4-Spades} turn meant Hanks needed an eight on the river, but it was not meant to be as the {7-Diamonds} peeled off.

Jacob Jung - 6th Place

Hand #73: Action folded to Jacob Jung in the cutoff and he moved all in for his last 50,000. Jess Dioquino called from the small blind and Eric Baldwin came along from the big. The active players checked the {3-Hearts}{3-Spades}{7-Spades} flop and {7-Diamonds} turn, and then Dioquino bet 35,000 on the {10-Spades} river. Baldwin folded and Dioquino tabled the {7-Clubs}{6-Hearts} for a full house.

Jung then showed the {K-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}, shook hands with his opponents and took his leave in sixth place for $51,086 and his first WSOP cash.

Robert Dreyfuss - 7th Place
Robert Dreyfuss - 7th Place

Hand #62: Matt Waxman raised to 48,000 under the gun and then called when Robert Dreyfuss moved all in for 179,000.

Waxman: {A-Hearts}{9-Hearts}
Dreyfuss: {A-Clubs}{7-Hearts}

Both players held an ace, and that meant it was down to the kicker. Waxman's nine bested Dreyfuss' seven, and it got even better when the {5-Spades}{4-Hearts}{9-Clubs} flop paired it. Dreyfuss was looking for running cards to stay alive, and the {2-Spades} turn was somewhat helpful as a three would allow him to chop on the river. Unfortunately for him, the {K-Hearts} river blanked and he was dispatched in seventh place.

Tuu Ho Eliminated in 8th Place ($29,147)

Nível 24 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante
Tuu Ho - 8th Place
Tuu Ho - 8th Place

Hand #41: In the very first hand back from the break, chip leader Matt Waxman opened for 48,000 from middle position only to have Tuu Ho, who doubled just before the break, three-bet to 100,000 from the small blind. Waxman responded by four-betting to 200,000 and then insta-called when Ho moved all in.

Ho: {A-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}
Waxman: {q-Spades}{Q-Hearts}

Ho was in bad shape and in need of some help if he hope to keep his tournament hopes alive. The {k-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{3-Clubs} flop wasn't much, though it gave him a gutshot straight draw, meaning he could still win with either a jack or ace. The {3-Spades} turn wasn't what he needed, and neither was the {9-Clubs} turn. Ho exited in eighth place to a nice round of applause and made his way to the payout desk to collect $29,147.

Nível 23 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Jason Koon - 9th Place
Jason Koon - 9th Place

Hand #29: A short-stacked Jason Koon moved all in from middle position for 59,000 and Brent Hanks three-bet it to 100,000 from late position. Amit Makhija took his time in the cutoff before four-betting to 200,000, and Hanks moved all in after action folded back to him. Makhija made the call and discovered the bad news.

Hanks: {K-Spades}{K-Diamonds}
Makhija: {K-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}
Koon: {A-Clubs}{4-Hearts}

Hanks had Makhija dominated, while Koon's best chance at survival was an ace. The {7-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{4-Clubs} flop gave Koon a pair of fours, but he'd need another to make it count. The {10-Spades} turn wasn't what he needed, and neither was the {J-Spades} river. Koon was dispatched in ninth place while Hanks doubled through Makhija.
