Day 6: Rustom Leads the Final 68; Mortensen, Gee, and Glazier in the Hunt

Sami Rustom
Sami Rustom

Good afternoon, and welcome back to the 44th annual World Series of Poker. With 68 players remaining, Day 6 of the WSOP Main Event is set to kickoff at high noon, and the chip leader is Diamond Bar, California's Sami Rustom. Rustom is the only player with over seven million chips (7,005,000), but he is closely followed by Marc McLaughlin (6,695,000), Jason Mann (6,580,000), and Maxx Coleman (6,260,000).

Rustom is a cash game player with only $43,957 in career tournament earnings. He has already more than doubled that figure thus far, but his eyes are certainly on the more than $8.3 million first-place prize and not the 68th-place payout of $102,102.

The only former champion in the field is 2001 Main Event winner Carlos Mortensen. The Matador bagged 2,665,000 chips after Day 5, and is looking to become the first Main Event winner to return to the final table since Dan Harrington (1995 winner), who final tabled back-to-back Main Events in 2003 and 2004. Mortensen is the last Main Event winner to earn a bracelet after taking down the big one, winning a $5,000 limit hold'em event in 2003.

Like Harrington, 2012 Octo-Niner Steve Gee is looking to make a return trip to the final table. Gee, who finished ninth in the 2012 Main Event, enters the day with 1,360,000 chips - half of an average stack - but the 2010 bracelet winner knows what it takes to make a deep run.

Only one female remains in the 2013 Main Event, and it's Australia's own Jackie Glazier. Glazier, who finished runner up in a bracelet event in 2012 and has nearly one million dollars in career tournament earnings, enters the day 12th in chips with just over four million, and is looking to become the second female to make a Main Event final table. In 1995, Barbara Enright became the first and only female to make a Main Event final table, finishing fifth for $114,180.

The cards will be in the air at noon, and the plan is to play five 120-minute levels. Once the production crew and the WSOP staff make an official decision, we will let you know.

Aces vs. Kings for Six Million Chips on First Hand of the Day

Jay Farber (Day 5)
Jay Farber (Day 5)

As Bruno Kawauti was celebrating on an adjacent table, Noah Schwartz had raised to 110,000 in middle position. Jay Farber reached for chips, three-betting to 265,000 on his direct left, and the action folded back to Schwartz, who four-bet to 580,000. Farber tanked for no more than 30 seconds, then double fisted a five-bet of 1.29 million in front of him.

"All in," Schwartz said, splashing forward a handful of lavender T100,000 chips.

Farber snapped it off, tabling {a-Hearts}{a-Spades}, and Schwartz unhappily showed {k-Hearts}{k-Spades}.

"F***!" Schwartz said, getting up from the table and walking towards the rail.

The flop fell {10-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}, and Schwartz was back in his seat by the time the {3-Clubs} turned. He slammed his phone onto the felt in disgust. The dealer burned one last card, then delivered a meaningless {j-Hearts} on the river.

After anteing, Farber's all in was for 3.025 million, and he doubled to 6.17 million. Schwartz plummeted to 565,000.

Timoshenko's Overfull Takes Big Pot

Yevgeniy Timoshenko held the nuts in a big pot.

Yevgeniy Timoshenko raised to 110,000 from early position and got callers in Keanu Tabali (button) and JC Tran (small blind). The flop came {8-Hearts}{k-Hearts}{k-Clubs}, and Timoshenko bet 180,000 after Tran checked. Tabali called, and Tran folded. Both players checked the {q-Spades}, and a {3-Clubs} hit the river. Timoshenko bet 420,000, and Tabali raised to 1,135,000. Timoshenko thought for a couple of minutes before coming back over the top with 2,750,000.

Tabali called, and Timoshenko showed him {k-}{q-} for the nut full house. Tabali showed {3-}{3-} for a mere rowboat compared to Timoshenko's yacht.

First Break of the Day: Timoshenko Builds Monster Chip Lead

Nível 26 : 25,000/50,000, 5,000 ante
Yevgeniy Timoshenko from Day 5

The first level of Day 6 of the Main Event is in the books. Play began today with the final 68 players trying to accumulate enough chips to reach the November Nine. After two hours of play, 12 of them have already been eliminated, and will have to wait for another year to reach that goal.

The chip leader heading into break is Yevgeniy Timoshenko, who vaulted to the top of the leaderboard when his full house beat a smaller full house. He has since extended his lead, becoming the first player in the tournament to hold more than ten million in chips, at the time over three million ahead of his nearest challenger.

Tyler Cornell was the first player eliminated today. His pocket jacks ran into Michiel Brummelhuis’s pocket queens. Brummelhuis ended up turning a set, and Cornell busted in 68th place for $102,102. Eleven more players followed him to the rail before the first break.

Steve Gee, the only player remaining from the 2012 Main Event final table, got off to a fast start by winning four of the first nine hands at his table. The only remaining former Main Event champion is Carlos Mortensen, who has held steady so far today and currently has about 2.3 million in chips.

Players will return to their tables in 20 minutes. Stay tuned for updated chip counts and live updates when play resumes.

Mortensen Folds After Clock Called

Nível 27 : 30,000/60,000, 10,000 ante
Carlos Mortensen got the clock called on him.
Carlos Mortensen got the clock called on him.

Carlos Mortensen raised to 135,000 under the gun, and he got two calls: Jorn Walthaus in the hijack and Matthew Reed in the small blind. The flop came {j-Hearts}{j-Clubs}{8-Spades}, and Reed and Mortensen checked. Walthaus fired 215,000, and only Mortensen called. A {7-Hearts} hit the turn, and Mortensen check-called a 510,000 bet. The {2-Hearts} river completed a possible flush draw, and Mortensen checked the wet board. Walthaus fired a final bullet, 975,000. Mortensen went deep into the tank, thinking for at least five minutes. Finally, a player called the clock, and Mortensen continued to think. As the tournament supervisor counted down to four seconds, Mortensen tossed his cards into the air toward the dealer.

Tran Doubles in Four-Bet Pot

Nível 27 : 30,000/60,000, 10,000 ante
JC Tran
JC Tran

Carlos Mortensen opened to 135,000 in the hijack, and James Alexander called in the cutoff. JC Tran put in a raise to 420,000 on the button, but Jorn Walthaus cranked it up to 945,000 from the big blind. Mortensen and Alexander got out of the way, and Tran called. The flop came {8-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{k-Spades}, and Walthaus bet 655,000. Tran raised to 1,450,000, and Walthaus came back over the top to 2,245,000. Tran immediately moved all in, and Walthaus called.

Tran: {8-Spades}{8-Diamonds}
Walthaus: {a-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}

Tran had outflopped his opponent in a big way, and he just needed to fade an ace and running hearts. The turn and river were the {3-Clubs} and the {q-Diamonds}, securing Tran's double.

Carlos Mortensen doubles up.

Jorn Walthaus raised to 1250,000 from middle position, and Carlos Mortensen shipped all in after it folded to his big blind. Walthaus snap-called, tabling {k-Spades}{k-Hearts}, while Mortensen held {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}.

The flop brought some extra outs for Mortensen: {q-Spades}{10-Hearts}{2-Hearts}. The turn was a {6-Clubs}, and Mortensen needed an ace or a jack to survive. The former world champion found his {j-Clubs} on the river, completing his broadway straight for a double.

McLaughlin Turns Straight, Gets Paid

Nível 27 : 30,000/60,000, 10,000 ante
Marc McLaughlin
Marc McLaughlin

Marc McLaughlin raised to 120,000 from the button and got a single caller in Jonathan Jaffe playing from the big blind. The flop came {8-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{2-Spades}, Jaffe checked, McLaughlin continued for 140,000, and Jaffe called.

The turn was the {6-Spades}. This time Jaffe led with a bet of 270,000, and after waiting a few beats McLaughlin put out a raise to 820,000. Jaffe thought for a while, then made the call.

The river brought the {K-Clubs} and a half-minute later a check from Jaffe. McLaughlin waited about 30 seconds himself, then put out a stack of lavender (100,000) chips and a couple of green (25,000) ones to make a bet of 1.55 million.

Jaffe didn't take very long before saying he was calling, and when McLaughlin announced "straight" — tabling {7-Hearts}{5-Spades} — Jaffe said "straight's good" and mucked.

That hand puts McLaughlin close to 9 million, just behind J.C. Tran at the moment on the leaderboard.

Second Break of Day 6: Chris Lindh Jumps into the Lead

Chris Lindh
Chris Lindh

Two levels of play are complete on Day 6 of the Main Event. After 12 eliminations during the first level, 10 more were sent to rail during the past level. There are now only 46 players remaining.

Chris Lindh is now the current chip leader. He knocked out Jaime Kaplan on one the last hands before break, and now holds over 12 million in chips. His nearest competitor has only about 8 million.

J. C. Tran vaulted to the upper tier of the leaderboard as well. He won a big, all-in confrontation with Jorn Walthaus after Tran flopped a set to beat Walthaus’s pocket rockets. The hand put Tran above eight million in chips. He has since built his stack to over nine million, and entered the break as the chip leader.

A little while later, Tran doubled up Jackie Glazier, the lone remaining woman in the field. Glazier had two million in chips just before break. Carlos Mortensen, the 2001 Main Event champion, also scored a double up during this level. His {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds} beat Jorn Walthaus’s {k-Spades}{k-Hearts} when Mortensen rivered a Broadway straight. Steve Gee joined the double up crowd as well, and later built his stack to over four million.

The break is schedule for 20 minutes. We’ll have updated chip counts from every table for you soon, and we’ll be back with live updates when players return to the tables.
