Rupert Elder, The One Man Wrecking Crew

Rupert Elder
Rupert Elder

Just a few minutes after taking out a player with {A-}{K-} against {Q-}{Q-}, Rupert Elder got himself into another race that was eerily similar to the last.

In middle position Elder had a bet of 5,800 in front of him after some unknown preflop action. From there, a woman in the big blind had reraised to 14,000. Action folded back around to Elder who effectively moved all in by dropping a stack of 100,000 chips in front of him, which was more than enough to put the player at risk. After a few seconds of thought, the player called it off and the two hands were turned up.

Elder: {A-Spades}{K-Spades}
Big Blind: {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}

The flop was no good for Elder when it came {5-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{5-Spades}, but the turn was just what he needed when the {K-Hearts} peeled off to put him way ahead in the hand. The river was the safe {9-Spades} and that allowed Elder to notch his second coin-flip knockout in row here in the Main Event.

Adeniya Double v2.0

Martins Adeniya had just received a double up through Luca Pagano, and was right back to the same tricks on the very next hand, doubling up again.

Picking up the action on the paired {9-Spades}{9-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} flop, Kenneth Raskin and a second player checked before Sergio Castelluccio fired 7,100. Luca Pagano made the call, and then Martins Adeniya raised it up to 17,600. Action fell back on Raskin, and he reraised to 35,000. After the next player folded, so did Castelluccio and Pagano. Adeniya then moved all in for 54,400, and Raskin made the call.

Adeniya showed the {3-Spades}{3-Clubs} for a full house, and Raskin had the {K-Clubs}{9-Diamonds} for trip nines.

"Wow," commented Raskin when he saw Adeniya's hand. "Can't believe that."

The turn was the {J-Clubs} and the river the {Q-Hearts}. Adeniya's full house held up, and he won the pot to double for the second hand in a row. Just like that, Adeniya moved to around 135,000 in chips. Raskin was left with 53,000.

Mathis Cracks Aces to Soar Up Leader Board

Marty Mathis
Marty Mathis

Catching the action with Marty Mathis having 14,000 in front of him and Justin Adams raising to 24,000 from the small blind, the action was back on Mathis in the cutoff. Mathis pushed all in for over 150,000 and Adams made the call for roughly his last 60,000.

Adams: {A-Spades}{A-Diamonds}
Mathis: {10-Spades}{10-Clubs}

With Mathis trailing but having Adams covered, the {J-Spades}{8-Spades}{7-Diamonds} flop gave him an additional four outs to go along with his two tens.

The turn changed little as it landed the {4-Spades}, but when the river saw the {10-Hearts} spike, Adams was left to hit the rail as Mathis soared to 305,000 in chips.

Ain't Nothin' But a Gee Thing, Baby

Steve Gee
Steve Gee

With around 60,000 in the middle, and the board reading {10-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{k-Spades}{9-Hearts}, Gilles Morihain moved all in for 85,000. His opponent, 2012 Octo-Niner Steve Gee, stood up from his seat. Finally, after around 90 seconds in the tank, he sat back down, and slid forward a tower of orange T5,000 chips to make the call.

Morihain turned over {k-Clubs}{j-Clubs} for a pair of kings, which Gee had beat with {a-Clubs}{a-Spades} for a pair of aces.

The {3-Hearts} bricked off on the river, and Morihain was eliminated. Gee now sits with over 300,000 chips.

Day 2a/b Concludes: Schwarmann Leads, Brunson and Merson Thrive

Nick Schwarmann behind his wall of chips

For two of the starting flights in the 2013 World Series of Poker Main Event, today was Day 2. Appropriately named Day 2a/b, the survivors from the first two starting days continued action inside the Rio, but in separate rooms from one another. Day 2a took place inside the famed Amazon Room, while Day 2b took place spread across the Pavilion Room and Brasilia Room.

Nick Schwarmann bagged up the most, finishing on 413,600 in chips. Schwarmann has already had some success at the 2013 WSOP already, finishing in second place in Event #38: $2,500 No-Limit Hold'em (Four Handed) for $191,434 and 48th in Event #11: $2,500 No-Limit Hold'em (Six Handed) for $7,126. Schwarmann also won the 2011 Heartland Poker Tour Daytona Beach event for a hefty $167,944, and has live lifetime tournament earnings of over $400,000.

The biggest story of the day was the continued success of two former champions of this event, Doyle Brunson and Greg Merson. Brunson, the 10-time gold bracelet winner and two-time winner of the Main Event, began his Day 2 with 81,025 in chips. Merson started with 81,650. Both built and built throughout the five levels of play endured and finished very, very healthy. Brunson bagged up 224,000 in chips, while Merson grew to 275,600 to finish out the day. Following a day off tomorrow while Day 2c plays out, they'll be back in action on Thursday.

Other notables returning to action today were Chris Moneymaker, Gaelle Baumann, Johnny Lodden, Joe Cada, Eugene Katchalov, Marc-Andre Ladouceur, Jonathan Karamalikis, Matt Salsberg, Jason Lester, Josh Brikis, Lee Markholt and Joe Tehan. Unfortunately for that group of players, their 2013 World Series of Poker is now over as they were all eliminated.

Moneymaker was eliminated during the first level of play today at the hands of Ivan Mamuzic. On the 10th anniversary of his Main Event win in 2003, Moneymaker was all in with {A-}{J-} against Mamuzic's {A-}{A-}. Moneymaker couldn't find a miracle, and his run was over.

Baumann, who finished in 10th place in last year's Main Event, fell in the third level of the day, Level 8. Wielding a relatively short stack, Baumann reportedly moved all in with {K-}{J-} and failed to improve against an opponent's {A-}{7-}.

While there were bunches of notable eliminations throughout the day, plenty of players thrived. Jason DeWitt, Sergio Castelluccio, Kenny Tran, Rupert Elder, Raj Vohra, Ravi Raghavan, Brandon Meyers, Ludovic Lacay, Annette Obrestad, Ronnie Bardah and Cliff Josephy all finished strong and will be moving to Day 3 with plenty of chips in their arsenal.

As mentioned, the Day 2a/b survivors will have a day off tomorrow to rest, relax and recover, but that doesn't mean the poker will stop. Day 2c will be taking place starting at 12 p.m. Las Vegas time, and you won't want to miss the action. PokerNews will have you covered all day long, so be sure to return right back here to these pages for another day from the WSOP Main Event tournament floor.
