No Book For Pinkus

Barry Greenstein
Barry Greenstein

While famously known for giving a copy of his book Ace on the River, to any player that busted him from a tournament, Brian Pinkus was not lucky enough to receive a copy today when he eliminated Barry Greenstein from this year's Main Event.

After a raise of 2,000 and two calls, Greenstein moved all in from the button for 20,400. The original raiser folded. The first caller, Brian Pinkus, went into the tank for a good two minutes before making the call. That lead to a fold from the other caller and brought Pinkus and Greenstein to a showdown.

Pinkus: {A-Spades}{K-Clubs}
Greenstein: {A-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}

The flop came down {10-Spades}{6-Spades}{10-Spades} giving Greenstein no help. The {K-Diamonds} on the turn paired Pinkus' live card, but also gave Greenstein outs to a gutshot straight draw. The river was the {6-Clubs} though and even though the pair double paired, Pinkus' pair of kings was enough to give him the knock out, but not a copy of Ace on the River.

Tens Give Vohra the Chip Lead

Raj Vohra
Raj Vohra

Matthew Parry raised it up to 1,800 in late position, and the small blind called. Raj Vohra was in the big blind, and he put out a three bet to 6,200. Parry called that raise, then the small blind moved all in for 20,200. Vohra made the call, as did Parry, and there was already over 60,000 in the middle going to the flop.

Those three cards were {j-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}, and Vohra led out for 13,000 into an empty side pot. Parry made the call, and the turn was the {2-Clubs}. Vohra put out a substantial bet of 55,000, and Parry went deep into the tank. He ended up thinking for over three minutes before letting his hand go, and it was just Vohra and the all-in player.

Vohra: {10-Hearts}{10-Clubs}
Opponent: {a-Hearts}{q-Clubs}

Vohra's tens had held up through the turn, and they stayed in the lead as the {7-Diamonds} hit the river. After stacking that pot, Vohra is now up to 312,000, which gives him the chip lead and makes him the first player to crack the 300,000 chip mark.

Not So Fast, Vohra

Sergio Castelluccio
Sergio Castelluccio

Just moments ago Raj Vohra took the chip lead when his {10-Clubs}{10-Hearts} held true against an opponent's {A-Hearts}{Q-Clubs} to move to 312,000.

However over in the Amazon Room, Italian player Sergio Castelluccio - who has held the chip lead since the opening few minutes of play - wasn't having any of that as he swiftly stole it back.

Castelluccio won several pots with the latest seeing him bet out 3,000 on a {4-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{3-Hearts} flop to force folds from two opponent's; one of which was fellow countryman Luca Pagano.

As Castelluccio ran away from the table (maybe for a bathroom break it seemed), our PokerNews reporter managed to count down his stack and it amounted to 331,300 ... enough for Castelluccio to re-take the lead from Vohra.

Ten-Deuey Still Good For Brunson

Doyle Brunson
Doyle Brunson

Doyle Brunson opened the pot with a raise to 1,900 from middle position. Only the player in the big blind called.

The flop came out {2-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{10-Hearts} and both players checked. "Beware of that one buddy," Brunson said pointing at the flop in reference to the fact that he has won two Main Events with {10-}{2-}.

"Isn't that a famous hand or something?" someone at the table asked.

The turn was the {2-Diamonds} and the big blind checked to Brunson again. Brunson bet and got a snap fold out of his opponent. Brunson only flashed the {10-Spades} but his boat was good enough to take down the pot.

"Just say he had ten-deuce for the sake of the blog," Brunson's opponent said while laughing.

Fortunate Turn Helps Merson Oust Harig Again

Greg Merson
Greg Merson

A year ago Wilfried Harig made a deep run to Day 7 of the WSOP Main Event, ultimately falling in 15th place in a hand versus the eventual champion Greg Merson after committing the last of his stack with {A-Spades}{A-Clubs} versus Merson's {K-Spades}{J-Diamonds}, then watching as a king fell on the flop then a jack on the turn to give Merson the better hand.

Harig just now found himself engaged in battle with Merson once again, and unfortunately for the German player the results were uncannily similar.

The hand began with a middle position raise to 1,800 followed by a call from Olivier Busquet playing from one seat over. Harig called as well from the hijack, then Merson reraised to 7,100 from the cutoff seat and it folded all of the way back around to Harig who thought a few moments, then called.

The flop came {5-Spades}{9-Spades}{8-Hearts} and Harig checked. Merson tossed out a bet of 10,700, then after a half-minute Harig check-raised to 25,000. Merson didn't waste too much time before putting out chips and declaring an all-in shove, and Harig called all in even more quickly.

Harig: {8-Clubs}{8-Spades}
Merson: {9-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}

Merson had flopped top two pair, but Harig had a set of eights and a big advantage with two cards to come. Alas for Harig, the turn brought the {9-Clubs}. Much like a year ago, fourth street had been cruel to Harig, in this case giving Merson the better full house. In fact, Harig was already drawing dead as the {J-Clubs} meaninglessly fell on the river.

Harig shook Merson's hand and departed, and Dan Fleyshman called over from across the table.

"Kind of felt like it was coming?" said Fleyshman to Merson, who grinned in response as he stacked the chips.

Perhaps after what happened on Day 7 in 2012, Merson did. Meanwhile, as the next hand was dealt the table spoke of what had just happened as well as what happened between the two players a year ago.

A little later Merson tweeted about the hand, again recalling the earlier one with Harig:

Greg MersonJust got super lucky against harig. Doubt he could run worse vs me lifetime. Good sport though, somehow was able to shake my hand after :/

Baumann Busto

Gaelle Baumann
Gaelle Baumann

There wont be a second deep run for Gaelle Baumann here in the Main Event.

Baumann was sitting on a relatively short stack for most of the day and just recently she lost it all. According to another reporter, Baumann moved all in holding {K-}{J-} and she was called by another players {A-}{7-}. The board bricked out for Baumann and that put an end to her 2013 World Series of Poker where she only cashed once in Event #44: $3,000 No Limit Hold'em for $7,287

Sexton Sent Off

Mike Sexton
Mike Sexton

Mike Sexton's seat was missing when we passed his table moments ago, and Bryce Yockey was kind enough to let us in on the details. According to Yockey, Sexton came in for a raise, Yockey called, and Chad Visser three-bet to 4,800. The action folded back to Sexton, who moved all in for around 15,000, and only Visser called.

Sexton: {a-Spades}{k-Spades}
Visser: {j-}{j-}

Visser's jacks held as the board rolled out {q-}{9-}{4-}{7-}{3-}, and Sexton was eliminated. Visser now sits with 140,000 chips.

Galfond Sets Up Nicely

Phil Galfond
Phil Galfond

After Phil Galfond opened with a raise from middle position, two players called from late position including John Hennigan playing on the button. Then the small blind repopped it to 6,500, and after the big blind stepped aside all of the other three players called the raise.

That meant a pot of about 27,000 was up for grabs as the four players saw a flop come {8-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{4-Clubs}. The small blind bet 20,000, Galfond called, and the other two players ditched their cards.

The turn then brought the {9-Spades} and an all-in shove from Galfond's opponent, and he quickly called. "Set?" said his opponent, and Galfond quietly said yes as he tabled his {8-Hearts}{8-Clubs}. His opponent reacted frustratedly as he stood and showed his {Q-Spades}{Q-Clubs}, exiting soon after the river came the {7-Spades} as Galfond earns a huge pre-dinner boost to his stack.

Josephy Rivers a Straight

Cliff Josephy hasn't had trouble getting chips today.
Cliff Josephy hasn't had trouble getting chips today.

We found Cliff Josephy, on the button, raising up a bet of 4,000 from the cutoff to 13,000. The board read {9-Clubs}{8-Spades}{8-Clubs}{j-Spades}. A third player, who had checked from the blinds, cold-called the bet. The original bettor called as well after a few minutes of tanking. The river brought a {10-Diamonds}, completing the four-straight, and the first two players checked to Josephy.

"I'm afraid," he said as he checked. The first player showed {a-Clubs}{j-Clubs} for top pair and a missed flush draw.

"I've got that beat," Josephy said. The cutoff seemed reluctant to table his hand, so Josephy announced that he had a straight, turning over {6-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}. The cutoff mucked, and Josephy dragged the pot.

Brunson Runs into Straight Flush

Doyle Brunson ran into the stone nuts.
Doyle Brunson ran into the stone nuts.

Three players had seen a flop of {8-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{7-Clubs}, and the player under the gun bet 3,000 when checked to. Both the small blind and Doyle Brunson in the big blind called. The turn was a {6-Hearts}, and the small blind bet out 4,000. Both of his opponents called. A {j-Clubs} hit the river, and the small blind checked. Brunson tossed out 12,000, and the under-the-gun player immediately moved all in for just a few thousand more. Brunson called after the small blind folded.

Brunson showed {q-Spades}{9-Hearts} for a queen high-straight.

"Straight flush," Brunson's opponent said excitedly, tabling {9-Clubs}{10-Clubs} for the absolute nuts. He took down the pot.
