Minh Ly Looking to Continue the Pattern of WSOP Success

Nível 2 : 100/200, 0 ante
Minh Ly (Seen Here at the Final Table of Event #55) is No Stranger to WSOP Success
Minh Ly (Seen Here at the Final Table of Event #55) is No Stranger to WSOP Success

Minh Ly is a player who epitomizes the feast or famine nature of tournament poker, as he has alternated between several six-figure scores here at the World Series of Poker, and summers without a single cash on poker's premier stage.

A quick review of Ly's record illustrates the often random nature of tournament results, as he made a splash in the $5,000 Short Handed No-Limit Hold'em event at the 2005 WSOP, finishing as the runner-up to none other than "Texas Dolly" himself Doyle Brunson. For that impressive showing, Ly earned $203,715, while cementing his reputation as a fearsome force on the felt after nearly a decade of grinding the circuit.

Ly followed up his 2nd place finish with a deep run in that year's Main Event, as he placed 19th and earned $304,680 for his efforts in wading through one of the largest fields ever assembled. Ly's validation was secured later that year, when he captured the 2nd annual WPT Doyle Brunson North American Poker Championship for $1,060,050, but he failed to make any waves the following year at the WSOP.

In the 2007 edition of the WSOP, however, Ly placed 5th at the $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha event for a score of $174,537, and he backed that performance up the following year with a 5th place finish ($118,816) at the $10,000 Seven Card Stud World Championship here at the Rio.

Continuing to ride the roller coaster known as variance, Ly failed to cash a single time at either the 2009 and 2010 WSOP, but he made his presence known once again in 2011, placing 3rd at the $50,000 Poker Player's Championship and taking home $665,763 in prize money.

Ly once again alternated six-figure scores with 0'fers, and he did not register a cash last year at the WSOP. This year, he got right back on the horse with another final table appearance at the $50,000 Poker Player's Championship ($309,830), and he is back in the house here today, looking to add another Main Event run to one of the more checkered tournament careers in poker history.

Williams Playing the Doyle

Nível 2 : 100/200, 0 ante

The good, old {10-}{2-} is known to poker players and fans as the "Doyle Brunson," but this time the hand belonged to David Williams as he raked in a pot with it.

Action folded to the player in the small blind, and he limped in. Williams was in the big blind and checked to see the flop come down {J-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{6-Hearts}. The small blind checked, Williams bet 200, and the small blind called.

The turn was the {9-Hearts}, and the small blind checked. Williams fired 600, and his opponent folded. Williams showed the {10-Hearts}{2-Hearts} for a turned flush and scooped the pot.

The player in middle position opened to 200, and was called in two spots, before Jonathan Aguiar raised it up to 1,050. The player in the small blind called, as did one other, before the flop came down {6-Hearts}{k-Spades}{4-Spades}.

The player in the small blind checked her option, as did the player in the hijack, before Aguiar threw out a continuation bet of 2,000. His opponent in the small blind then snap raised it up to 5,100, which saw the hijack, plus Aguiar, quickly release their hands.

Easy Come, Easy Go for Fleischer

Nível 2 : 100/200, 0 ante

Within 22 minutes of this tournament Terry Fleischer had eliminated Mehrdad Danialifar and doubled his stack. It was the dream start, but things have quickly went south for Fleischer as he lost all those chips and then some to poker pro Micah Raskin.

We didn't see the hand when it happened, but Raskin was kind enough to fill us in on some details. According to him, Fleischer opened with a raise holding the {a-Hearts}{3-Hearts} and Raskin three-bet holding {a-}{a-}. Fleischer flatted and the flop came all low cards with two hearts. Fleischer led out with his flush draw and Raskin raised. Fleischer then jammed and Raskin, who had a decent stack behind, tanked before calling off. The turn and river both blanked and Raskin's pocket rockets held to give him the hefty pot while Fleischer's dream start turned into a nightmare as he is now down to 13,000.

Steven Burkholder the Boat Holder

Nível 2 : 100/200, 0 ante

With a flop of {5-Spades}{j-Spades}{10-Diamonds} already spread across the felt, Steven Burkholder checked from the small blind, moving the action over to an opponent in the cutoff.

The other player tossed out a bet of 1,500 and watched as Burkholder slowly cut out a raise to 4,500. When the opponent flatted in position, the turn card came {5-Hearts}.

Burkholder then led out for an 8,000 wager, and his opponent hemmed and hawed a bit before loudly announcing a call. The dealer burned and turned on fifth street, delivering a blank in the {3-Clubs}.

That's when Burkholder pushed a big stack of chips forward, and before the dealer could even count them down the other player grabbed his own stack and heaped it into the middle. A snap-call by Burkholder turned the cards face up.

Showdown:

Burkholder: {J-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}
Opponent: {10-Hearts}{10-Spades}

The busted player was crestfallen when he saw the bad news, and he made his displeasure known with a few obscenities muttered under his breath. Regaining his composure, the coolered player offered Burkholder a sincere "nice hand sir," before making his way from the tournament floor in a daze of devastation.
