Bracelet Winner and Military Hero Ken Griffin Looking to Relive History

Nível 2 : 25/50, 0 ante
Ken Griffin (Seen Here at the Height of His Poker Career) is Here Today Hoping to Make Another Amazing Run
Ken Griffin (Seen Here at the Height of His Poker Career) is Here Today Hoping to Make Another Amazing Run

With thousands of unfamiliar faces marking the beginning of every low buy-in WSOP event, a glimmer of recognition can occur in the most unlikely ways.

When a seemingly anonymous player asked us to update his chip count, the scene was unremarkable initially, until it became apparent that this was not your typical amateur.

In 2011, Ken Griffin won a gold bracelet, and $455,356 in first place money, by emerging from a massive field of 2,890 runners to capture every chip in play. With a similarly large field expected here today, spotting Griffin among the masses was a bit of a random occurrence, but we were glad to seem him back at the WSOP pursuing his second piece of poker hardware.

As a ten-year veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, who served tours of duty in both Iraq and Afghanistan, Griffin is not defined by his poker accomplishments, and instead has dedicated his life heroically to the defense of our nation's freedom. Although adding a second bracelet to his trophy case would certainly be quite the feat, Griffin knows better than most that there is more to life than a card game, and that sense of perspective undoubtedly aids his game on the felt.

Huy Will, Huy Will Chop You

Nível 2 : 25/50, 0 ante

Huy Nguyen has now become a fixture in this tournament, and we caught him playing a hand as we walked up to his table.

A player in early position opened the pot to 200 and Nguyen called from the big blind. On the {5-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{5-Hearts} flop, Nguyen check called a bet of 400 from his opponent.

The turn brought the {6-Hearts} and both players checked. The river came the {9-Clubs} and both players checked again.

Nguyen opened his hand reluctantly showing his {A-Spades}{Q-Spades}, but his opponent also turned up his {A-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds} giving both players the same hand. The dealer chopped up the pot and Nguyen took his half, while his opponent collected his.

Pilgrim Rides the Mayflower

Dwyte Pilgrim (Seen Here in an Earlier WSOP Event) Just Arrived, Like Pilgrims Always Do, On a Big Boat

Circuit grinder Dwyte Pilgrim is known for his willingness to dive into any poker tournament, from the Rio's Daily Deepstack series to WPT Championships, and everything in between. While other players choose their tourney schedules based on the potential for television appearances, the chance to compete against upper echelon players, and other esoteric factors, Pilgrim just plays the game, all day, everyday.

Pilgrim is in the house here this afternoon, trying to add a gold WSOP bracelet to his impressive list of poker accomplishments, and after a recent hand, he is off to a great start.

According to the easygoing Pilgrim, who is always ready with a little dap for fans, fellow players, and even the occasional nosy reporter, he spiked a set with {9-}{9-} on the {a-}{9-}{8-} flop.

Pilgrim bet 250 on the flop, and his opponent made the minimum raise. After calling in the only way he knows how, smoothly, Pilgrim bet 750 on the {2-} turn. His opponent flatted, and the river {8-} gave Pilgrim a boat. An all in and a call later, Pilgrim had claimed his first stack of the day, and we will be sure to track this dangerous pro's progress as the day continues.

Kassela Out

Frank Kassela
Frank Kassela

After a quick start here in Event #54, former Player of the Year Frank Kassela is busto. We didn't catch the action but another player at his table was kind enough to inform us that Kassela flopped the butt end of a straight with {8-}{9-} on a {10-}{j-}{q-} flop and he got all his chips in against a player with {A-}{Q-}.

The turn was a blank for Kassela and it kept him in the lead, but the river was a {K-} giving his opponent a better broadway straight to eliminate Kassela from the tournament. A rather unfortunate end for Kassela especially after he had doubled up just a few hands earlier here on Day 1.

Farrell Off To a Slow Start

Nível 2 : 25/50, 0 ante
Niall Farrell at an earlier 2013 WSOP final table.
Niall Farrell at an earlier 2013 WSOP final table.

Niall Farrell is in the field today after a deep run in Event #44: $3,000 No-Limit Hold'em where he finished second for $366,815, but he's not off to as good a start as he was in that tournament. After just one level he's down to less than a third of his original stack.

We watch Farrell play one hand while we were stalking around his table. In the hand Farrell opened to 75 from under the gun. He was called by a player in middle position and the player in the big blind as well. The flop came down {9-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{4-Clubs} and the big blind player checked to Farrell who fired out 150. The middle position player folded to the big blind who called.

The turn was the {6-Clubs} and both players checked, and they both checked again on the {4-Diamonds} river. The player in the big blind showed {J-Hearts}{9-Clubs} and that was good enough to take down the pot as Farrell mucked.

Farrell still has chips left to play with so anything could happen, but he's already short here on Day 1 of Event #54.

When Getting Hit in the Face is a Good Thing

Nível 1 : 25/25, 0 ante

As is typically the case here at the World Series of Poker, the long hours of preparation and anticipation that accompany a player's first foray into the tournament floor can be dashed in an instant.

Two unfortunate players found that to be true early, with Marcos Jose Garcia claiming their entire stacks just a few hands after taking his seat at the table.

We heard the dealer announce "all in, call, and call!," and by the time she dropped the river card, Garcia had tripled up in dominant fashion.

Apparently the flop fell {10-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}{j-Hearts}, and one player with {8-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} got his stack into the middle in a hurry. When he was called in two spots, he seemed to suspect the bad news, asking "is my straight any good here boys?"

Garcia turned over the {A-Clubs}{k-Spades}, and indeed, his opponent's lower straight was beaten. The third player in the hand held {K-Hearts}{q-Clubs} for top pair and a redraw to the chop, but the turn ({3-Spades}) and river ({q-Diamonds}) changed nothing.

"Welcome to the table, sir," offered Frank Kassela, while Garcia eagerly stacked his new chips.

"Thanks," he replied casually. "The deck hit me in the face."

Frank Kassela Spikes a Set on the River

Nível 1 : 25/25, 0 ante

The Brasilia Room is where the World Series of Poker has hung banners celebrating past Player of the Year recipients, and with his mug staring back at him from the Rio's rafters, 2010 POY Frank Kassela is off to a great start.

Sitting at the table directly in front of the PokerNews Live Reporting desk, Kassela just doubled his starting stack on one of the first deals of the day.

We missed the action, but with the final board reading {3-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{j-Spades}{j-Hearts}{4-Spades}, the two-time bracelet winner had his {4-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} triumphantly tabled, while his stunned opponent could only look down at his {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Spades} in disappointment.

After notching the early elimination, Kassela now has a double stack, and with his edge in experience over the largely amateur field, we expect him to use those chips aggressively as the day progresses.
