Welcome to Day 3 of the WSOP Seniors Championship!

James Miller is the Day 3 Chip Leader at the Seniors Championship
James Miller is the Day 3 Chip Leader at the Seniors Championship

With a total of 4,407 seniors taking their seats on Day 1, this event became the second largest single day opening field for a poker tournament, which proves that poker is still America's pastime for people of all generations. Today, just 34 players return for the third day of play, and one of them will accomplish their dream of winning a World Series of Poker bracelet.

The chip leader coming into the day is James Miller (1,088,000), and he is trailed by Kenneth Lind (1,057,000) and James McClendon (1,029,000), with these the only three to bag and tag more than a million chips.

Along with the hopeful amateurs still in contention, there are still a few experienced professionals in their midst. After finishing 4th in this event just last year, seasoned veteran of the tournament circuit Hoyt Corkins will enter play with a modest 266,000 to work with. Although his chip count is below the average, as we all know from his two WSOP bracelet wins, and his many final tables on the WPT, the Alabama Cowboy is always in the mix to win it all.

Joining Corkins from the professional ranks will be Mark "P0ker H0" Kroon, who will enter play with 358,000 at his disposal. Kroon was the chip leader momentarily as Day 2 drew to a close, but a brutal suckout stopped his momentum in an instant. As one of the first players to dominate the online game, using the hyper-aggressive tactics now typical to a generation raised on internet poker well before they became widely recognized, Kroon is definitely capable of running his stack back up in a hurry.

There were also many notable names to fall short yesterday, including 1997 WSOP Main Event runner-up John Strzemp (125th), rising poker star Young Ji (104th), 2002 Main Event Champion Robert Varkonyi (73rd), and experienced bracelet-winner Dan Heimiller (39th). Although these pros came up short in their bid to bag a bracelet, each of them proved something with their deep runs through this huge field.

To get you ready for the exciting poker action to come, here is the daily update video from our very own Sarah Grant.

Mark Kroon Crushed by Queen on River

Mark Kroon's Senior Championship Run is Over
Mark Kroon's Senior Championship Run is Over

We didn't see the action, but nobody could mistake the agony in Mark "P0ker H0" Kroon's voice when he screamed out as a bad river card hit the board.

Apparently, Kroon made a play with {A-}{5-} on the {7-}{3-}{4-Clubs}{9-Clubs} board, but Kenneth Lind wanted to the river with his {Q-Clubs}{10-Clubs}. With all of his chips in the middle, Kroon's read was right and his ace-high hand was in front, but the {Q-Spades} on the river ended his tournament in painful fashion.

Harold Kizzire Hogties the Alabama Cowboy

Hoyt Corkins Will Not Return to the Seniors Championship Final Table
Hoyt Corkins Will Not Return to the Seniors Championship Final Table

As one of the few players in the world to have won twice at the WSOP and on the WPT, Hoyt Corkins was by far the most experienced player left in our field. Seeking to improve on his 4th place finish in this event last year, Corkins will have to try another day after his Seniors Championship run came to an end at the hands of Harold Kizzire.

Kizzire took a large portion of Corkins stack in a previous clash, and he finished the Alabam Cowboy off with {7-Diamonds}{7-Spades}. THe action folded around to Kizzire in the small blind, and he looked over at Corkins' short stack to see 20,000 of his 80,000 as dead money in the big blind. Kizzire quickly moved all in to put Corkins at risk if he called, and he was happy to see the dangerous pro turn over just {7-Clubs}{5-Hearts}.

"Worst hand I could see," said Corkins. "I'd rather go up against aces here."

Corkins' suspicions were confirmed on the {3-Hearts}{k-Hearts}{6-Diamonds} flop, and his gutshot never got there on the turn ({3-Spades}) or river ({A-Spades}), sending him home short of consecutive final table appearances at the Seniors Championship.

Kimberley Kilroy Flops Set for the Triple Up

Kimberley Kilroy is Beaming After Her Huge Triple Up
Kimberley Kilroy is Beaming After Her Huge Triple Up

Michel Bouskila opened for 45,000, James McClendon called, and Kimberley Kilroy thought this was a good time to move her short stack of 129,000 all in.

She was not pleased to see Bouskila make the four-bet, reraising to 275,000, and when McClendon called she stood up in preparation to make her exit.

The flop fell {4-Spades}{a-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}, and after a check by Bouskila, McClendon moved all-in himself. The play pushed Bouskila out of the pot, and McLendon turned over the {A-Clubs}{2-Clubs} expecting to be in the lead.

Kilroy revealed the {4-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}, however, and her flopped set gave her a huge advantage over McClendon's single pair. The {5-Hearts} on the turn brought a gutshot draw for McClendon, and some added sweat for the last lady left in the Seniors Championship, but the {K-Diamonds} on the river secured her the triple up.

"I folded {K-}{K-}," said Bouskila quietly to nobody in particular. "The ace came..."

George Wright Eliminated in 17th Place ($25,027)

George Wright

We came to the table after Barry Bashist announced "all in" following a raise by George Wright. Wright, having just folded a "big hand" prior to this, called for less.

George Wright: {a-Spades}{k-Hearts}
Barry Bashist: {a-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}

The {3-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{j-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} board was dealt and Bashist's aces held up eliminating Wright from the tournament.

Kimberley Kilroy moved all in with {10-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} and after some thought was called by Stephen Lutz holding {k-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}. Lutz had Kilroy covered and a classic race was underway.

Kilroy survived the {4-Hearts}{5-Spades}{7-Clubs} flop and {3-Hearts} turn but the {k-Spades} river gave Lutz the winning hand, eliminating Kilroy from the tournament. Kilroy became the last woman standing when Cynthia Foster was eliminated from the tournament in 44th place.

Michael Thorpe - 15th Place

After losing a big pot when his {A-Clubs}{K-Hearts} failed to catch up to Jack Ward's {K-Spades}{K-Clubs}, Michael Thorpe open-shoved for his last 195,000 or so holding the {8-Clubs}{9-Clubs}.

He was happy to find that his cards were live against the {A-Clubs}{10-Diamonds} tabled by Randolph Spain, but the final board of {k-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{3-Clubs}{4-Hearts} brought him no help, and he was shaking hands by the turn.

Spain moved above the million chip milestone, while Thorpe was left to accept heartfelt "good game" congratulations from each and every one of his former tablemates.

The last of James McClendon's short stack was wagered on the {10-Clubs}{9-Clubs}, but he was dominated when Dana Ott tabled the {J-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}.

With Ott's supporters on the rail calling for a jack to end it, the dealer delivered on the {j-Spades}{4-Spades}{3-Spades} flop. The {6-Clubs} ended things on the turn, and the {A-Hearts} completed the board on the river.

McClendon fell short of the final table, but he pockets more than $30,000 for his deep run here at the Seniors Championship.

Jim Downend got it all in preflop with big slick, but his {A-}{K-} lost the race against James Miller's {10-Diamonds}{10-Spades}.

The final board ran out {2-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{6-Spades}{q-Hearts}{j-Spades}, and with no pair, Downend's run at the Senior Championship came to an end. His 13th place finish earned him more a return of over thirty times his investment, however, along with memories to last a lifetime.

Steven Albini said "that isn't good" when his all in was called by John Holley. Albini held {a-Diamonds}{8-Hearts} and Holley {q-Spades}{q-Hearts}. Another player said he folded an ace, but Albini's son called for one anyway.

Seeing as it's Father's Day, the dealer obliged by dealing {k-Diamonds}{a-Spades}{8-Spades} on the flop. Albini's top pair wouldn't last through the {j-Spades} turn and {9-Spades} though, giving Holley the flush and eliminating Albini from the tournament.
