A Pair of Hands for Montgomery

Scott Montgomery possesses two cash so far at this year's World Series of Poker. Montgomery managed to come up one short from the six-handed final table in Event 23: $3,000 No-Limit Hold'em - Six-Handed, placing 7th for a $49,214 payday. Montomgery also cashed in Event 41: $3,000 No-Limit Hold'em, but finished 17th for another nice cash for $27,248.

Today we find him playing the Main Event, everyone's last chance to win a bracelet. Montgomery happened to be playing a hand when we got there and here is what happened.

An early position player raised it up to 525, prompting a call from the cutoff and Montgomery in the big blind. The flop came {2-Spades}{8-Spades}{A-Spades} which lead to all three players checking.

The {9-Clubs} on the turn brought a bet of 1,000 from Montgomery. The early position player got out of the way, and the cutoff raised to 2,500. Montgomery made the call and both players were witness to the {k-Spades} on the river. Montgomery was first to act and he checked. The cutoff fired out 4,000, a bet to rich for Montgomery and he folded.

The very next hand Montomgery was right back at it completing from the blind after two players had limped in, the big blind then checked his option. The flop fell {8-Clubs}{4-Spades}{A-Hearts} and Montgomery checked. The under the gun player bet out 550, the middle position player folded and Montgomery made the call. The big blind folded as well, and the two were off to the turn.

The {j-Clubs} on the turn saw both players knuckle the felt for checks. It was then that the {q-Clubs} appeared on the river. Montgomery checked and the under the gun player bet out 1,350. Montgomery made the call and his opponent instantly mucked. Montgomery pushed his cards forward and the dealer snagged them up before anything could be exposed. Montgomery still won the pot, and now sits right around starting stack.

Gotta Katch 'em All

We caught up with the action to see the player in the small blind, Eugene Katchalov, and David Singer looking down at a flop of {j-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}.

With 3,800 in the pot from preflop action, the small blind led out for 2,300. Katchalov called and Singer got out of the way. The {9-Diamonds} struck the turn and the small blind fired out once again with a single orange t5,000 chip. Katchalov decided to stick around.

The river paired the board with the {Q-Spades} and the small blind slowed down. Katchalov bet 7,500 and the small blind threw away his hand.

"Would you have called a shove?" asked the small blind.

"I'd rather not say," replied Katchalov as he stacked his newly earned chips.

Seed Ships It In

A player limped in from middle position and it was folded over to Huck Seed on the button, who raised to 700. Action folded back around to the limper, who made the call for a heads-up pot.

Seed's opponent checked the {8-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{7-Diamonds} flop, prompting a 1,300 bet from Seed. His opponent called.

Both players checked the {4-Diamonds} turn, however, when Seed's opponent checked again on the {5-Clubs} river, Seed tanked and shuffled his chips for a while. He then announced he was all in, which was a huge overbet for about 30,000. His opponent quickly mucked and Seed scooped the pot.

One of Seed's tablemates made a comment that we didn't quite catch, but Seed replied, "I didn't want to show," with a grin.

Seed is sitting on 33,300 after that one.

Stern Steps Aside, Tryba Chips Up

Dani Stern opened with a raise from the hijack seat and got two callers from the button and Chris Tryba in the big blind, the group together building a pot of about 2,000.

Chris Tryba is one of several players participating in the Onnit Last Sticker Standing Contest. Among the players in the Main Event sporting an Onnit sticker, the last one with chips stands to earn a cool $5,000 as part of the promotion.

The flop came {4-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{3-Hearts}. It checked to Stern who continued for 1,200, and only Tryba called. The turn brought the {8-Diamonds}, and Tryba quickly check-called again when Stern bet 2,200.

The river was the {7-Spades}, and once more acting quickly, Tryba bet 3,800. After nearly two minutes, Stern let his hand go.

Tran Slipping

Last time we checked on JC Tran he ran into an opponent's trip aces and lost a small chunk of his stack. This time we saw him heads up in a pot with the flop reading {9-Hearts}{9-Spades}{8-Diamonds}. Tran's opponent checked and Tran fired 1,800. His opponent called and they both checked when the {5-Diamonds} came on fourth street.

The board completed with the {A-Hearts} and Tran's opponent bet 2,200. Tran called and his opponent showed {A-Spades}{10-Spades} for a rivered pair of aces. Tran slapped his cards down on the table in a small fit of frustration and began shuffling his remaining chips quietly.

Tran is currently sitting on a stack of 19,300.

Flush Draw Turned Two Pair for Greenstein

There was 1,050 in the middle and the flop had come all hearts — {7-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{5-Hearts} — when Barry Greenstein led from the small blind with a bet of 750. His opponent sitting one seat over in the big blind then raised to 1,700, and Greenstein called. The turn was the {J-Clubs}, and this time Greenstein checked, his opponent bet 2,975, and Greenstein called.

The river brought the {A-Diamonds} and another check from Greenstein. This time his opponent fired 5,000, and Greenstein called again. The big blind turned over {7-Spades}{5-Spades} for two pair, but Greenstein had {A-Hearts}{J-Spades} for a better two pair and he took the pot.

Filling in the Gaps

Nível 2 : 100/200, 0 ante

As hands proceed, table talk fills the gaps between hands. It's fairly quiet right now over in the blue section, where those three feature tables are located. Quiet enough for those playing to overhear Ali Nejad in the corner shooting some video for ESPN in which he sounds as though he's narrating an end-of-day intro in which he's talking about Day 1b having already concluded.

At Dan Harrington's table they began remarking on how Nejad spoke as though he knew how things were going to end today, with Jeff "PKRGSSP" Walsh and Katie Dozier laughing and joining in the conversation.

That led Harrington to recall a story about Ronald Reagan from well before his days as an actor and president, back when he worked as a radio broadcaster in the 1930s.

Reagan apparently would deliver play-by-play accounts of Chicago Cubs baseball games via reports sent to him via telegraph as if he were there. The way the story goes, on one occasion the telegraph died and Reagan continued to deliver the action, inventing it wholesale, for several minutes until communication was restored. A clever bit of gap-filling, that.

Former Main Event Champ in Tan, Baby

Scotty Nguyen has just taken his seat over in the Tan Section. The 1998 Main Event champion's lone cash at this year's World Series of Poker comes from Event 24: $5,000 Omaha Hi-Low Split 8-or-Better where Nguyen placed second. First place was the only thing on Nguyen's mind, but alas he came up short. Today Nguyen has the chance to make up for the loss, by making a deep run here in the Main Event. We will make sure to keep an eye on the ever entertaining Nguyen as he competes for another Main Event victory.

A few tables away sits Richard Toth. The Hungarian poker pro happened to be playing a hand and here is what happened. The table folded around to Toth in the hijack and he raised it up to 450. The cutoff made the call and the rest of the table folded.

The dealer spread a {8-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{6-Diamonds} flop, it was here that Toth continued for 550. The cutoff called rather quickly and both players were off to the turn.

The {2-Clubs} landed on fourth street and we had a repeat of action with Toth betting out, this time 1,100 and the cutoff quickly calling. The {Q-Clubs} on the river wasn't going to slow down Toth who bet out 2,600. The cutoff then took a few seconds to ponder before throwing out a call.

Toth flipped over {j-Hearts}{9-Hearts} for the straight and the cutoff sat in mild disgust as he threw his cards into the muck.

Kuether Can't Call

Andrew "LuckyChewy" Lichtenberger opened to 500 from under the gun and found one caller directly behind him in Joe Kuether - who recently placed third in Event 54: $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em.

The flop came {J-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} and Lichtenberger tossed out a c-bet to 600. Kuether responded by raising to 1,550 and, after some thought, Lichtenberger made the call.

Both players checked the {7-Clubs} turn, however, when the {8-Hearts} completed the board, Lichtenberger fired for 2,200. Kuether slid his hand to the muck and Lichtenberger scooped the pot.

Lichtenberger is sitting right around the starting stack, while Kuether has 38,000 following the hand.
