Gavin Cochrane has won the WPT World Online Championships 8-Max Championship on partypoker for $540,664. The first No-Limit Hold'em event of the WPT WOC attracted a total of 1,062 entries, generating a prize pool of over $3 million.

Cochrane not only takes home the six-figure payout, but $15,000 entry to the Tournament of Champions including flights and accommodation, and his name immortalized on the Mike Sexton Champions Cup.

Coming into the final table as chip leader, Cochrane suffered an early setback against Dmitry Yurasov, but remained in contention throughout. He eventually triumphed in an entertaining and fast-paced heads-up contest against Thomas Boivin who would have to settle for second place and $388,119.

Other notables at the final table included Lars Kamphues whose brother Timo won the Shooting Stars for Charity event earlier this week and Ognyan Dimov, who was looking to secure a triple crown with a WPT victory.

Cochrane came into the day with a clear chip lead over his nearest competitor, but that didn't last long. Half an hour into the final table, Cochrane turned a missed straight draw into a bluff, and Dmitry Yurasov was only too happy to call off his stack with top pair and move into the lead.

It took less than an hour for the first elimination, with Sam Grafton sent to the rail in ugly fashion. First, his pocket kings were cracked by the ace-queen of Shyngis Satubayev to be left with less than a blind. Amazingly, he picked up pocket kings on the very next hand and got it in against the ace-ten of Yurasov.

The Belarussian went runner-runner to make a straight and Grafton was eliminated.

Ognyan Dimov and Jiachen Gong went next, before two eliminations in quick succession saw Gavin Cochrane close the gap to Yurasov atop the leaderboard.

He first sent Daniel Colpoys to the rail in a classic flip, and then eliminated Satubayev who received the first six-figure payout of the tournament.

Four-handed play continued for some time, with Thomas Boivin establishing himself in the chip lead as Yurasov dropped to the bottom of the pack, level with Lars Kamphues. Eventually it was Yurasov who was eliminated, calling it off in the big blind with ace-eight after Cochrane shoved from the small blind. However, Cochrane had picked up kings, and although Yurasov flopped an eight, it wasn't enough and the former chip leader was eliminated.

Kamphues quickly followed him out the door after losing a flip to Boivin, and the tournament was heads-up.

Heads-Up Play

WPT WOC 8-Max Championship Heads-Up
WPT WOC 8-Max Championship Heads-Up
  • Thomas Boivin - 70.1 million (86 big blinds)
  • Gavin Cochrane - 36.7 million (45 big blinds)

Boivin held the advantage heads-up, and increased the margin between the two players over the opening exchanges. The gap remained steady until Cochrane secured a vital double after flopping a straight.

Thomas Boivin {8-Hearts}{7-Clubs} raised to 1.6 million and Gavin Cochrane {7-Spades}{5-Spades} defended his big blind. The flop {8-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{4-Spades} gave Cochrane the nut straight. He checked and Boivin continued for 2.5 million. Cochrane check-raised to 7.4 million and Boivin three-bet all in and Cochrane called for his last 29.3 million.

The turn {j-Clubs} and river {3-Diamonds} bricked and Cochrane flipped the tables on his opponent and moved into the lead.

It was now Cochrane's turn to hold onto a lead, but eventually he managed to secure victory. Boivin limp-jammed in the small blind with ace-four, with Cochrane holding ace-jack. A jack on the river was more than enough, and Cochrane closed out the victory.
