Leah Holds Big Lead; Duhamel and Khouiss Make 3rd Final Table of WSOP APAC

Nível 21 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante
Mike Leah

While the World Series of Poker Asia-Pacific Main Event was playing down to a final table on one side of the room, the AU$25,000 High Roller was doing the same on the other. It took just over 10 levels of play, but eventually the returning 31 players — and five late registrants — of a 68-player field was whittled down to the final six.

All of them are guaranteed a minimum payday of AU$85,027, but every one of them have their eyes firmly fixed on the AU$600,000 reserved for the winner. The man best positioned to capture it is Mike Leah, who leads the final table with 2.576 million.

Leah's stack is more than twice as much as his next closest competitor, David “MissOracle” Yan, who finished sixth at the 2013 Aussie Millions. Others still in contention are 2012 WSOP Main Event runner-up Jesse Sylvia; 2 Months, 2 Million star Brian Roberts; 2010 WSOP Main Event winner Jonathan Duhamel; and then Sam Khouiss. Both Duhamel and Khouiss are making their third final table of the WSOP Asia-Pacific.

The day kicked off with a slew of eliminations including those of Jeff Rossiter, Rory Young, Fabian Quoss, Ali Ghezelbash, and Brandon Shack-Harris, who late registered after busting the Main Event in 17th place for AU$23,441.

The High Roller was Shack-Harris’ last opportunity to catch George Danzer in the 2014 WSOP Player of the Year race, but his quest came to an end in Level 12 (1,500/3,000/500) when, on a flop of {Q-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}, Shack-Harris and Sean Winter got all the money in. Shack-Harris had flopped the best of it with the {K-Spades}{Q-Clubs} for trip queens, and Winter held the {A-Diamonds}{A-Hearts}. The turn was the {9-Clubs} to keep Shack-Harris in front, but then the {A-Spades} spiked on the river to give Winter a winning full house.

With that ace on the river, Danzer earned the title of 2014 WSOP Player of the Year with 923.5 points to Shack-Harris' 829.2. Danzer earns an entry to the 2015 WSOP Main Event for his accomplishment, but of course everyone knows the title is the real prize.

Here’s a look at how the WSOP Player of the Year race between Danzer and Shack-Harris finished up, which included three lead changes here at the WSOP Asia-Pacific:

PlayerPointsBraceletsFinal TablesCashesMoney Earned
George Danzer923.503510$867,649
Brandon Shack-Harris829.20159$1,448,716

Before long Shack-Harris was joined on the rail by Eddy Sabat, Tobias Reinkemeier, Jeff Gross, Daniel Neilson, Mike Watson, David Steicke, Mohsin Charania, and Phil Hellmuth.

Hellmuth actually exited as the "bubble boy" in Level 20 (10,000/20,000/3,000) when action folded to Yan and he raised to 40,000. Leah called, as did Hellmuth in the big blind, and three players saw a flop of {J-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{8-Hearts}. Action checked to Leah and he bet 55,000, which only Hellmuth called with just over 200,000 chips behind.

On the {7-Hearts} turn, Hellmuth checked again and Leah moved all in. The "Poker Brat" spent quite some time in the tank, removed his headphones, and double-checked his cards.

"What do you have, Mike?" he asked. About 30 seconds later he pushed his stack forward and the cards were tabled.

Hellmuth: {A-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}
Leah: {8-Diamonds}{8-Spades}

Hellmuth had top pair with a flush draw, and he needed to hit his flush as Leah had a set. Only a non-nine heart could save Hellmuth, but it wasn't in the cards as the {9-Diamonds} blanked on the river sending a devastated 13-time WSOP gold bracelet winner home one spot shy of the money.

Toss in the eliminations of Andrew Hinrichsen (8th - AU$50,021) and Sam Higgs (7th - AU$65,035), and the final table was set.

Sam Higgs Eliminated in 7th Place (AU$ 65,035)

Nível 21 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante
Sam Higgs
Sam Higgs

It took three hands into the new level to reduce the field to six and reach the official final table for tomorrow.

In the first hand, Jesse Sylvia raised to 50,000 from under the gun and Sam Higgs called out of the big blind only to check-fold the {2-Spades} {J-Clubs} {10-Hearts} flop to the continuation bet of Sylvia. One hand later, [Removed:17] raised to 50,000 and won the blinds and antes, reducing Higgs to just over one big blind.

The third hand saw a raise of Mike Leah to 48,000 and Higgs called all in from the button, the two players in the blinds folded.

Higgs: {J-Clubs} {6-Spades}
Leah: {8-Diamonds} {7-Hearts}

The {8-Clubs} {K-Spades} {5-Hearts} flop gave Leah the lead. Higgs picked up a few more outs on the {6-Clubs} turn but the {2-Clubs} river was a blank.

Andrew Hinrichsen Eliminated in 8th Place (AU$50,021)

Nível 20 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Andrew Hinrichsen - 8th Place
Andrew Hinrichsen - 8th Place

[Removed:17] opened for 40,000 from early position and Andrew Hinrichsen shoved his last 109,000 all in from the big blind. Yan made the call and the cards were turned up.

Hinrichsen: {k-Clubs}{q-Hearts}
Yan: {a-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}

The {3-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{4-Hearts} flop was no help to Hinrichsen, and while he paired his king on the {K-Spades} turn, Yan stayed in the lead with his ace kicker. Hinrichsen needed a queen and a queen only on the river to stay alive, but it was not meant to be as the {5-Spades} blanked.

Phil Hellmuth is the Bubble Boy

It took awhile, but bubble has finally burst.

It happened when action folded to [Removed:17] and he raised to 40,000. Mike Leah called, as did Phil Hellmuth in the big blind, and three players saw a flop of {J-Hearts} {9-Clubs} {8-Hearts}. Action checked to Leah and he bet 55,000, which only Hellmuth called with just over 200,000 chips behind.

Cruel Elimination for Winter

Nível 18 : 6,000/12,000, 2,000 ante
Sean Winter
Sean Winter

Mike Leah raised to 24,000 from under the gun, and Sean Winter moved all in from the button for what looked like 168,000 in chips. [Removed:17] made the call out of the big blind, and Leah folded.

Winter: {A-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}
Yan: {A-Clubs}{J-Clubs}

What started as a headache for Winter soon turned into a smile on the {10-Clubs}{6-Spades}{10-Diamonds} flop, almost locking up the double. The {J-Spades} on the turn now gave Yan two outs to win the hand, and sure enough the {J-Diamonds} fell on the river to give "MissOracle" the win.

It Just Wasn't Merson's Day

Nível 18 : 6,000/12,000, 2,000 ante
Greg Merson
Greg Merson

When it just isn't your day, there's not much you can do. And that would be the case with Greg Merson's Day 2.

Merson entered the day with 174,200 in chips, and that was good enough for 11th overall. He worked his way up the leaderboard throughout the day, but suffered a big hit when his pocket kings lost out to Jonathan Duhamel's pocket deuces thanks to a deuce on the river after the money went in preflop. Then, Merson lost with pocket kings for a second time in another very important pot — this time losing to Jesse Sylvia who hit an ace with ace-king.

Although he did manage some double ups to stay alive, Merson was unlucky with another big pocket pair for a third important time, and this time saw his tournament come to an end.

Merson was all in with the {Q-Spades}{Q-Diamonds} against the {K-Clubs}{J-Hearts} for Brian Roberts. The board ran out {K-Hearts}{K-Spades}{J-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{A-Spades} to give Roberts a full house and send the 2012 World Series of Poker Main Event champion to the rail.

Charania Bows Out in 14th Place

Nível 18 : 6,000/12,000, 2,000 ante
Mohsin Charania
Mohsin Charania

Action folded around to Mike Leah in the small blind and he asked Mohsin Charania, who was in the big, how much he had behind. The answer was 18,000, and Leah smiled before just limping. Charania splashed in all of his chips, and Leah called.

"No need to induce me Mike," Charania joked.

Leah: {j-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}
Charania: {8-Clubs}{7-Hearts}

"You have the best of it," Charania pointed out. Indeed, Leah's jack high was out in front, but Charania was drawing to two live cards. Unfortunately for him, he wouldn't find them as the board ran out a clean {2-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}. Leah stood to shake hands, and afterwards Charania took his leave from the 2014 WSOP APAC.

Steicke Busts; Hinrichsen Hits One Million

Nível 17 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
David Steicke
David Steicke

From under the gun, David Steicke raised to 26,000. Action folded over to Andrew Hinrichsen in the cutoff seat, and he reraised to 46,000. Play got back to Steicke, and he made it 76,000. After a minute, Hinrichsen moved all in, and then Steicke went into the tank. Eventually, Steicke made the call to put himself at risk for 231,000 total.

Hinrichsen had the {K-Spades}{K-Hearts}, and Steicke had the {A-Hearts}{K-Clubs}. The board ran out {Q-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}, and Steicke was eliminated as Hinrichsen hit one million in chips.

Graham's Kings Cracked

Nível 14 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Jarred Graham
Jarred Graham

Andrew Hinrichsen opened with a raise and then called when Jarred Graham three-bet jammed.

Hinrichsen: {a-Hearts}{10-Spades}
Graham: {k-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}

The {8-Spades}{8-Hearts}{j-Hearts} flop kept Graham firmly in the lead, but the {Q-Spades} turn gave Hinrichsen a straight draw to a nine to go with his over. Wouldn't you know it, the {9-Hearts} spiked on the river to give Hinrichsen the straight and send Graham out the door via a bad beat. With that, just 16 players remain and are redrawing down to the final two tables.

Smith Wasn't Prepared for Winer

Nível 14 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Asa Smith
Asa Smith

A {j-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{8-Clubs} flop saw Sean Winter bet 17,000, Asa Smith call, can the dealer burn and turn the {3-Hearts}.

Winter opted to shove all in, and Smith, who had approximately 125,000 behind, was put to the test. He spent nearly five minutes in the tank before calling off.

Smith: {a-Clubs}{10-Clubs}
Winter: {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts}

Both players held separate flush draws, but as it was Winter was ahead with ace-queen. That's what would win it too after the {K-Diamonds} river failed to help either player.
