Brendon Rubie pulled us aside to inform us of a hand he'd just won.
As he told it, he looked down at under the gun and opened with a raise. The player to his left, who he said had been folding nonstop for nearly two hours, then three-bet all in for 1,100. Action folded back to Rubie, and it wasn't much more for him to call. He expected his opponent to have , which he did, but Rubie made the call nonetheless.
The flop gave Rubie a set, but his opponent had flopped an even bigger one. The only way Rubie could win was with the case ten, and wouldn't you know it, the peeled off on the turn. The other player failed to catch the case ace on the river, and Rubie was the beneficiary of the bad beat.
Juicy Li opened for 600 under the gun and current WSOP Player of the Year leader Brandon Shack-Harris defended from the big blind. Shack-Harris then check-called a bet of 700 on the flop before checking the turn. Li kept the pressure on with a bet of 1,500, and this time it did the trick as Shack-Harris released his hand.
Tony Hachem saw the turn of a board and put Scott Reid all in. The latter called for his last 7,875 and had flopped the nuts with . Hachem was drawing slim with and needed a king or nine to avoid the setback. The on the river didn't help and Reid scored the double up.
Earlier today, Melbourne local and tattoo shop owner Sam Higgs took down Event #5: $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha for AU$127,843 and a gold bracelet. After the win, Higgs joined his friends and family for a celebratory dinner, and then he left them to jump into this event. Higgs was seeking back-to-back bracelets, but his attempt was cut short by November Niner Bruno Politano.
Higgs was nursing a short stack and got it all in on a flop only to find himself in dire straits against his Brazilian foe.
Higgs:
Politano:
Higgs had flopped top pair, but it was no good as Politano was sitting on the granddaddy of all hands. Neither the turn nor river helped Higgs, and he was sent to the rail. Needless to say, even after being eliminated it's been a heck of a day for Higgs.
Level 6 has expired, and that means it's time for the one-hour dinner break. When they return the remaining players will play four more levels before bagging and tagging for the night. Late registrations will remain open up to the start of Level 7, so last call for those interested in Event #7 AU$2,200 Six-Max No-Limit Hold'em.
