Welcome to the 2022 Winamax Poker Open Madrid €500 Main Event

Feature Table Casino Gran Madrid
Feature Table Casino Gran Madrid

With live poker returning from a hiatus all over the world, the next operator to test the waters is French online giant Winamax. The popular Winamax Poker Open has been taking place since 2010 when it all kicked off in Dublin and quickly became a favorite festival for many aspiring recreationals and professionals alike.

For the latest installment and the first since 2019, the online poker and sports betting giant is heading to the Casino Gran Madrid Torrelodones situated on the outskirts of the city.

The marquee event of the series is the 2022 WPO Madrid €500 Main Event, which already had more than 600 players pre-registered for the first three flights one day prior to the start of the event. This includes qualifiers on the French and Spanish Winamax poker platform as well as local players who secured their entry early on.

All signs point towards a very busy few days ahead and it may even be possible that a new record for the series will be set. In 2013, the WPO Main Event first surpassed 1,000 entries and Frenchman Jerome Guermeur topped a field of 1,086 entries. Notable winners thereafter included current Winamax Team Pro Pierre Calamusa and WSOP bracelet winner Antonin Teisseire. The record attendance was set in 2019 with Philippe Guillou emerging victoriously among 1,389 total entries.

The 2022 WPO Madrid €500 Main Event consists of four starting days and three of them have a regular duration of 30 minutes each from May 11 to 13 with a kick-off time at noon. Furthermore, there is also a turbo heat on May 13 as well which features levels of 15 minutes each as of 9pm local time.

All players receive 50,000 in chips and the late registration in each regular heat is open for the first 16 levels. One re-entry is allowed for each heat and the registration will close at the end of level 16. The survivors will then return for Day 2 and aim to play down to make it one step further to crowning a champion in Madrid.

It's not only about the poker action but Winamax also provides plenty of side activities for all participants as well. That includes the popular Beer Pong Open, a Masterclass with the Winamax Team Pros, Bongo Loco, and a player's party on Friday the 13th.

The PokerNews live reporting team will be on the floor to provide coverage of the WPO Madrid Main Event until a winner has been crowned on Sunday, May 15, 2022.

Heads-up to the {j-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{3-Spades} flop, "Tsunamy" check-raised a bet worth 2,500 by Guillermo Gordo Cifuentes to 7,000 and earned a call from the fellow Spaniard as both headed to the {9-Spades} turn. "Tsunamy" now bet 13,000 and the almost immediate shove by Gordo Cifuentes for what appeared to be around 48,500 followed.

"Tsunamy" eyeballed the stack of his opponent for a mere ten seconds and opted to fold.

Dennis Berglin

Only 8,000 were in the middle to the {10-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{k-Hearts}{j-Diamonds} river on which Valentin Oberhauser checked. Dennis Berglin bet 6,000 on the button and Oberhauser then pushed for more than 55,000. After nearly a minute, Berglin called and Oberhauser turned over {k-Clubs}{7-Clubs} for just the top pair, which Berglin had beat with {k-Spades}{8-Clubs} for two pair.

The next Winamax Team pro in the field is Spain's Alejandro Romero, who made a deep run recently in the EPT Monte Carlo €5,300 Main Event in which he finished ninth for a payday of €69,990.

Romero had already chipped up and was then involved in a heads-up pot with a late entry as they headed to the {a-Spades}{10-Spades}{3-Clubs}{3-Hearts} turn. Out of the big blind, the Spaniard bet 4,000 into a pot of 9,000 and his opponent from under the gun folded.

Arturas Bliudzius had meant to reraise to 5,500 by mistake but instead clicked it up to 11,000. That resulted in a squeeze to 21,000 by Loic Debregeas, who then called the all-in by Bliudzius for 27,800 total.

Arturas Bliudzius: {a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}
Loic Debregeas: {q-Spades}{q-Hearts}

The {a-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{6-Spades} flop propelled Bliudzius into the lead and he remained there after the {9-Hearts} turn. However, the new Winamax Team Pro spiked the {q-Clubs} on the river to deal the final blow.

Andris Resevskis

Four Main Event tables were pulled into the Mandalay Room that features the live stream table, which currently hosts the final five players in the Battle Royale Knockout Event #14 with Jorge Ufano and David Comeron in the mix.

Three Winamax Team Pros can be found in Main Event action and much to the surprise of nobody, Pierre Calamusa stormed into a big stack already. His table saw a three-bet pot between Andris Resevskis on the button and Johan Creutz in the big blind.

On the {q-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{9-Hearts} flop, Creutz check-called for 8,000 and did so again for 13,000 on the {a-Spades} turn. They checked the {6-Clubs} river and Creutz flashed the {j-Spades}{j-Clubs}, which Resevskis had beat with the {a-Clubs}{j-Hearts}.

Baptiste Abadie: {q-Diamonds}{q-Spades}
Alexandre Homadi: {a-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}

The gutshot and nut flush draw of Homadi bricked on the {9-Hearts} turn and {9-Spades} river to leave the Frenchman with fumes, which he lost shortly after.

Julien Ehrhardt
Julien Ehrhardt

Throughout the day, Julien Ehrhardt had been among the chip leaders and he just cemented that status with another bigger pot. It was in fact a preflop contest in which Antoine Whitehead was at risk for more than 100,000 and Ehrhardt made the call.

Antoine Whitehead: {a-Spades}{k-Diamonds}
Julien Ehrhardt: {j-Spades}{j-Clubs}

The {8-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{7-Spades}{q-Diamonds} board kept the pocket pair in the lead and Whitehead was sent to the rail.

Tsunamy

Christopher Migano Leal raised to 6,500 and "Tsunamy" then pushed for what appeared to be just shy of 58,000 from one seat over. Migano Leal mulled it over for a short while and then made the call with the far superior stack.

"Tsunamy": {a-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}
Christopher Migano Leal: {a-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}

The {j-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{3-Spades}{6-Hearts}{6-Spades} board delivered the double to "Tsunamy" and Migano Leal gasped a short "joder" before passing over the chips.
