Defending Champion Mateos and WSOPE Champion Roca Advance to Winamax SISMIX Day 2

Nível 20 : 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Adrian Mateos
Adrian Mateos

Defending champion Adrian Mateos navigated a late spell on the feature table in the Winamax SISMIX Main Event here at the Gran Casino Costa Brava to make it to Day 2.

However, after defeating 1,252 on his way to the title last year in Marrakech, it looks like Mateos will have to defeat substantially more if he is to defend his crown after 547 entered on Day 1b. Coupled with entries from Day 1a, that makes 949 unique entries with both Day 1c and the Turbo Day 1d still to come.

Mateos was responsible for the shuffle up and deal earlier in the day, and the Spaniard said that it felt special on his home soil.

"It's probably the biggest field I've ever played in Spain for sure," said Mateos. "To make the shuffle up and deal is a pleasure and an honour for me.

"Today went smoothly for me. There were no big pots or all-ins. All pretty smooth. I've been lucky because the table was pretty tight. If players aren't playing many pots then I can't win many pots!"

Mateos has been a Winamax Team Pro since Autumn in 2017 and was fortunate to take down the SISMIX last year, just nine months into his tenure.

"When I signed I thought they wanted to make a tournament in Spain, but I'm surprised at how big this tournament is. I expected more people than [last year] in Marrakech, but this is crazy. They've completely sold out and they expect 2,000 people and they get way more. Both Winamax and I are pretty happy and we hope that everyone enjoys the tournament."

But the Spaniard reiterates that the SISMIX is a special kind of tournament, one not just about poker and bagging up for the next day. Instead, its focus is perhaps away from the felt and among the other activities on offer.

"This type of tournament is one where people are at the pool, in the parties, playing in the beer pong. People are enjoying it; it's like a holiday with poker than a poker tournament. It's way different compared to EPTs or big tournaments. Here people want to have fun and they want to enjoy. They want to have a really nice week or even a weekend.

"For the last four years, the SISMIX are the only €500 tournaments that I've played. It's nice to come back and see that people are here to enjoy [the poker]. When you play €10k or €25k people are really focused and want to win, but it's fun and really good to come here and see people just enjoying the moment. I really enjoy playing this type of six-max tournament. There's a lot of action and you play a lot of pots. The people are good to talk to and you have a good time in the tournament.

Players Advancing to Day 2

Leading the Day 1b field is Vincent Cavailles who is the clear chip leader with 870,000. Behind him Pawel Zawadowicz (673,000), Carl Dobrzelewski (618,000), Ali El Alj (589,000), Thomas Baron (565,000), Thomas Rahaba Risoa (526,000) and Guillaume Gomez (514,000) are the only players above 500,000 in chips.

Former WSOPE champion Marti Roca (242,000) is also advancing to Day 2. Roca, who was born in Barcelona, took down the 2017 WSOP Europe Main Event for over a million Euros and will join his compatriots Mateos and Leo Margets, who advanced from Day 1a, in the Day 2 field.

The remaining Winamax Team Pros and other players looking to enter this record-breaking festival can do so on Friday, May 24 at 12:30 local time. Winamax Team Pros Aladin Reskallah and Bruno Lopes will have to jump into the Turbo Day 1d flight, the only re-entry option allowed, which gets underway at 10 p.m. on Friday. All Day 2 players will return on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. local time to resume play.

Stay tuned to PokerNews for continued coverage of the Winamax SISMIX festival.

Winamax Team Pro Delmas Wins Beer Pong Tournament

First there was Pierre Calamusa at the 2018 SISMIX in Marrakech. Then, there was Gaelle Baumann at the Winamax Poker Open Dublin.

And this evening, Adrien Delmas added his name to the list of Winamax Team Pros to take down the "second" Main Event at Winamax live events, the Beer Pong Open.

After narrowly making their way past the PokerNews and PokerPT team in the quarter-finals, Delmas and his partner were lucky in the semi-final to sneak through to the final where they dominated their opponents, winning by three cups to take down the title.

"This is a crazy win," said Delmas. "The best one of my career."

Delmas, who has only played two Beer Pong Events - in Marrakech at last year's SISMIX and this year - said that he has practised ahead of this year's event.

"We played some beginners in the opening rounds. My friend was on fire; he was putting everything in there. The semi-final was complicated, but luckily we eliminated four cups in one and made the final."

And the final resulted in a comprehensive victory for the Team Pro and his partner, who took home a commemorative shirt and trophy.

"I played the High Roller and busted Day 2. I bust Day 1a of the Main Event, and today is just a day of rest - obviously the Beer Pong! It's a good atmosphere here and everyone is having fun."

Team PokerNews Eliminated at the Quarter-Final Stage of the Beer Pong Open; Team Pros Delmas and Deyra Through to Semis

We fought gallantly, and were in a commanding positing, holding a 2-1 lead against Winamax Team Pro Adrien Delmas, but unfortunately, Delmas and his partner threw both their balls into the same cup to send Team PokerNews and PokerPT to the rail at the quarterfinal stage, securing themselves a place in the semi-finals.

Delmas will be hoping to be the latest Team Pro to secure the title, after Pierre Calamusa in the last Winamax SISMIX in Marrakech, and Gaelle Baumann at the most recent Winamax Poker Open, but they will come up against some tough opposition in the semi-final!

There could still be an all-Team Pro final with Ivan Deyra making it through, albeit on the opposite side of the draw.

Last year, in Marrakech, Adrian Mateos became the third Winamax Team Pro after Davidi Kitai (2014) and Bruno Lopes (2016) to win the SISMIX Main Event.

He took home 1,000,000 MAD (~€89,000) after defeating Portuguese player Henrique Pinho heads-up, and he now joins the aforementioned Lopes in the Day 1b field.

The Five B's of the Winamax SISMIX Festival

Winamax SISMIX 2019

With under a month to go until the Winamax SISMIX Costa Brava, taking place in Casino Costa Brava, Spain from May 20th to 26th, we thought we ought to take a look at what makes this festival more special than any other.

So we asked some of the Winamax Team Pros and Team Pro Manager Stephane Matheu what players might expect, what events will be taking place, and why you should consider jumping into the ‘Second Main Event’ – the Beer Pong Tournament!

The Buy-in

The €500 Main Event is the perfect price point for those wanting to balance affordable buy-ins with the chance to win big money! Not only is the buy-in perfect, but the six-max format is always a fan favorite and will be warmly received by all players – especially the aggressive ones!

Last year in Marrakech, Winamax Team Pro Adrian Mateos took down the title, taking home just over €89,000, flanked by fellow Team Pros who were all on the rail cheering him on.

“It’s obviously not my biggest win,” said Mateos. “But I know that my fellow Team Pros Davidi [Kitai] and Bruno [Lopes] have won it before, so it felt nice to join them.

“The whole group is really supportive and I love being part of it.”

The Banter

Many tournaments try to balance the atmosphere at the tables with the seriousness of the competition, and this is something that Winamax prides itself on.

Captain Vodka Franck Besnard

From a player dressing up as Captain Vodka during the Main Event to carnival performers parading around the swimming pool. And you have to stick around for the midnight ‘Deglingos.’ All-in flips that take place each and every night that are famous for the loudest rails in poker.

“It’s going to be a great festival," said Winamax Team Pro Mustapha Kanit. "It's a great city, with a great vibe. Really close to the beach so I’m looking forward to it.

“I think there is always this group vibe at Winamax tournaments. It’s a smaller buy-in and many French people see it as a place where they always can meet friends and there’s a bit less pressure while you’re at the tables.”

Speaking of the loudest rail in poker, you might want to check out the next item on our list.

The Beer Pong

Yes, you read that correctly. Beer pong. To many, this constitutes the ‘Second Main Event’ of any Winamax Festival.
Just like the Main Event, the Beer Pong Tournament has previously been won by multiple Team Pros, with Pierre Calamusa (pictured) triumphing at the Winamax SISMIX in Marrakech two years ago, before Gaelle Baumann took down the title at last year’s Winamax Poker Open in Dublin.

Certainly a must for any person planning on attending!

The Beats

The Winamax SISMIX is not just about poker. There are also parties, events, and entertainment on offer throughout the festival, with DJs and performers giving the festival an atmosphere unlike any other.

“It’s a great mix of poker as well as partying and chilling because it’s non-stop outside of the poker tables," said Winamax Team Pro Romain Lewis. "That’s what it was like in Marrakech and I can’t believe it will be any different in Spain.

“I’m sure there will be the same party vibe as Marrakech, and I’m pretty excited by the closeness of the beach too. Everyone has one eye on the prize pool and one eye, two ears and the rest of their body on the moves by the pool or at the club. It should be great fun!”

The Brava (Costa, that is)

This year, the Winamax SISMIX festival takes place at the Gran Casino Costa Brava, just a short walk away from the 5* Gran Hotel Monterrey which will host the pool parties and evening entertainment.

With beaches just a few minutes’ walk from the hotel, the tournament schedule has events for all bankrolls. There are three starting days for the Main Event, starting on the 22nd of May, as well as a €1,000 High Roller, Monster Stack, and special Sunday Surprise tournament where players receive a mystery prize for every player they eliminate.

“We are all very excited and looking forward to the first Winamax live event to take place in Spain, on the Costa Brava!" said Winamax Team Pro Manager Stephane Matheu.

“In addition to the great location, the SISMIX Costa Brava will combine poker, music and fun parties for everyone! Vamos!"

Aladin Reskallah on Achieving His Winamax Team Pro Dream...Twice!

Nível 8 : 350/700, 700 ante
Aladin Reskallah
Aladin Reskallah

Living in Canada, studying in Montreal and playing mostly cash games, Aladin Reskallah said he stumbled on Winamax whilst looking for more information about how to improve his game. Years later, he's now a Winamax Team Pro and the only ever two-time Winamax Top Shark winner.

"I wanted to find some poker content in French, because that's my mother language, and I came across Winamax. I'd never heard of them. And I was like 'Oh my god,' there was so much content! There's Dans la tete d'un Pro and when I saw it there was so much information!"

Reskallah was particularly interested in the Team Pro stable that Winamax had at their disposal. With the same atmosphere and branding, the team appeared just like any sports team heading to competition together.

"It was a dream, obviously, to be part of a team like this. And then I saw the Top Shark Academy competition to join the team."

A few years later, Reskallah made the decision to quit his job and leave Montreal ("I was tired of the winter") and went back to France where he started playing online poker in earnest. He gave himself a year to try and become a professional poker player, and to win the Top Shark competition.

Aladin Reskallah
Aladin Reskallah

Top Shark is an initiative by Winamax that offers players the chance to join the ranks of Winamax Team Pros such as Adrian Mateos, Davidi Kitai, Mustapha Kanit and Leo Margets.

Over seven weeks, they are tested on their poker skills in the hope of eventually winning the €50,000 package which includes buy-ins to Winamax events, as well as events on both the European Poker Tour and at the WSOP, including the $10,000 Main Event.

"It would be such a great opportunity, to get to know all the best French players. And when I won it the first time it was pretty life-changing, getting to play the big tournaments was a big opportunity to boost my bankroll."

By his own admission, the first year went "not so bad," and Reskallah finished with 10 cashes and approximately €40,000 in cashes, with Winamax opting not to renew his contract at the end of the year.

"I knew at the beginning it would be unlikely I'd be renewed because of the newer players joining. But that gave me extra motivation to win a big tournament like a bracelet or an EPT. I was trying to do all I could to try and be renewed. I was a little disappointed, but not that much."

Reskallah headed back to the online felt, and worked on his routine and game. With the help of his friends he found a new sense of discipline, heading to the gym multiple times a week and focusing on his diet and sleep patterns. So by the time the latest Top Shark came around, he felt in a much better place.

"I was confident from the beginning. The hardest part is to get into the Academy because there are a lot of steps online and a lot of variance. Every week one or two people bust, but two people are safe. What happens is you get nominated and people can vote for you to save you.

"I knew that I had quite a good following, and a good community on Twitter and Facebook, so I knew it would be very difficult to bust me before the final. But, you still have to win the final!"

Aladin Reskallah will be heading back to the WSOP as part of his Winamax Top Shark package
Aladin Reskallah will be heading back to the WSOP as part of his Winamax Top Shark package

And he did, securing himself a second €50,000 package including a number of major poker tournaments over the course of the next year, and Reskallah says he's really happy to be back.

"This year I know how the circuit works. I know how to prepare myself, and of course I'm a better player because I studied a lot over the two years. This year I want to be better than last time, and I've set myself the goal of 15 cashes and €100,000 in winnings. Obviously, if I get that goal sooner than I will set a bigger goal, but I don't think that's too ambitious.

His second stint as a Winamax Team Pro may only be in its infancy, but he's already set his sights for the future.

"This time I'm going to play more tournaments outside of the package. Two years ago I was almost broke, but now I'm better and I have a bigger bankroll. So maybe, you know, this time maybe I have a better chance of being renewed. I'm the first to win it twice! Winning it one time it seems almost impossible, so winning it two times? The odds must be very, very high!"

For some people, tonight's Beer Pong Open is the TRUE Main Event of any live Winamax Festival. It will be held outside at the Gran Hotel Monterrey pool, home of the pool parties and DJ sets throughout the week.

Everyone from regular players, those here just for the holidays and even Winamax Team Pros jump into the action and hope to take down the title!

Check out our report from the Winamax Poker Open Dublin, when Winamax Team Pro Gaelle Baumann and Kevin Noblat took down the event.

It's official! The tournament clock shows 505 of 520 players remaining, meaning that Day 1b of the 2019 Winamax SISMIX Main Event has become the largeste starting flight in the history of the event.

It surpassed the 518 set on Day 1c of last year's event. And with late registration open for another 12 levels(!) that number could increase further still!

Yesterday, Jon Ander Vallinas took down the Winamax SISMIX High Roller for €47,760 after defeating Sonny Franco heads-up. The star-studded final table featured Winamax Team Pros Romain Lewis and Mustapha Kanit, with Davidi Kitai narrowly missing out as he was eliminated in eighth.

Here are the final table results:

Aladin Reskallah looks like he's the early bird among the Winamax Team Pros. Reskallah is a two-time Top Shark Academy winner, a Winamax promotion that gives players the chance of signing a €50,000 contract and join the stable of Team Pros.

Back in 2016/17, he won the contract and was part of the team for a year. Then, a few months ago, he did the unthinkable and won it again.

Now he's jumping into his first Winamax Main Event here at the Gran Casino Costa Brava and is hoping to get his year off to the best possible start.
